I mean, how hard is it? Drop the magazine, rack it, and either a round will be ready (and removable) or you can put a finger into the chamber to make sure it is emply.

“When the weapon fired” and similar claims sound to me like “the tree jumped out into the road and hit my car!” I’m aware that a dropped firearm may go off by itself, but aside from that (or similar “trauma”), it will only fire if someone takes definite action. Anything else is bushwa.

There was a fairly bad TV movie with just this same plot. The Prez is stuck in a snowstorm in a little Colorado bar, provokes the world into a shooting Nuke war, only for them all to find out their shit is no good and all fail. We “Win”.
Like I said, it wasn’t a real good movie.
Not to defend the gunidiots, but there is a rare phenomenon known as slamfire, where a semi-automatic weapon will continue to fire by itself. I was fortunately taught about this in a gun safety class. Fortunate because when it happened to me with a .22 rifle, I knew what to do. Instead of freaking out and dropping the weapon, I just aimed it safely and let it carry on firing until it was done on its own. Still, it’s a very unnerving thing when it happens.
Wouldn’t happen in the scenario described, though.
