NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration will not seek new bids to repair the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Sunday as he faced new questions about the troubled project and the taxpayer money involved.
Like President Donald Trump , Burgum said he was 100% sure that vandals caused the damage to the century-old Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. Trump has charged that a 350-foot gash was cut into the pool’s liner in the midst of recent renovations, while Burgum described it as multiple cuts adding up to that figure. He also said the pool would have to be at least partially drained in the coming week to finish the repairs.
The repairs will not be opened up to new contractors, he said.
“We’ll use the same company, because they did a fantastic job,” Burgum told CNN’s “State of the Union." ”Thankfully, the vandalism was small. It was bad. I mean, it could cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair, so then it could fall into a felony … just like damaging any other government property could. But the job that was done to fix the Reflecting Pool was done extremely well."

President Donald Trump hopes to put the newly outfitted Air Force One, a gift from the Qatari government worth $400 million, into his presidential library after leaving office – but he could run into obstacles doing so, from Democrats in Congress to the physical complexities of getting the plane in a building.
In March, Trump showed off digital renderings of his future presidential library and potential hotel, which showed the luxury Boeing 747-8 parked in the lobby next to a golden escalator. The plane, which Trump controversially accepted as a gift, is expected to be transferred to his presidential library after his term ends.
He boasted about it to reporters in the Oval Office, acknowledging that putting Air Force One in the lobby of a skyscraper in the middle of Miami was likely going to be “a trick.”
While the physical barriers may require some creative thinking, the president must first ensure he can physically keep the plane – something Democratic members of Congress may try to block, should they win back the House in the midterms, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.
In June, one Democratic representative sought to stop the aircraft from being transferred to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library with an amendment. Last year, Senate Democrats also attempted to prevent any foreign aircraft from serving as Air Force One.
Both measures have failed, thanks to congressional Republicans.
But should Democrats pick up more seats in the upcoming midterms, they may have better luck preventing Trump from taking home his $400 million foreign-gifted plane.
A spokesperson for Rep. Joe Courtney, who introduced the amendment preventing the transfer of the jet to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library, told the Wall Street Journal that Courtney will continue working to ensure the aircraft “remains the property of the U.S. government.”

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Sunday said the House will attempt to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act “one more time ” through a budget reconciliation bill.
“The president has that as a top priority, and so do I,” Johnson told Fox News’s Shannon Bream in an interview on Sunday. “We passed it three times in the House. We’re going to try one more time on a budget reconciliation bill, and I think that will be the way to get it through the Senate, and finally, to the president’s desk.”
Johnson defended the House version of the SAVE America Act as the “backbone” of what President Trump is pushing for to pass the Senate.
He said that although a prohibition on mail-in voting with exceptions and other requests made by Trump could be included, the “bigger reach” is to hone the bill to focus on providing proof of citizenship when registering to vote and the presentation of photo ID before casting a ballot — the core components of the bill.
“That eliminates the problem, all the fraud and everything that everybody’s concerned about in our elections, particularly, frankly, in these blue states,” Johnson said.

It came months after another racist post by the president that showed the couple as primates in a jungle. That one was deleted after stiff, bipartisan backlash.
The latest image shows the Obamas smiling and waving at the top of stairs alongside a baby blue and white presidential plane with graffiti painted on it that included the Democrat’s campaign slogan “Yes We Can,” “Obama” and “BLM,” short for Black Lives Matter. The post also shows graffiti in Arabic on the plane that says the phrase “alhamdulillah,” which means “praise be to God” or “thank God.”
The use of graffiti is a coded message to remind people of crime and urban decay and has been used in racist messaging against Black people in the past.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos challenged an official in President Donald Trump’s Cabinet on a bizarre claim about vandalization of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
In an interview on ABC’s This Week Sunday, Stephanopoulos grilled Interior Secretary Doug Burgum about Trump’s repeated claims that vandals made gashes in the pool totaling 350 feet — more than the length of a football field.
“The 350 foot gash, made by a very sharp knife or razors, is actually numerous slashes over a very long 350 foot length,” Trump wrote in a June 23 Truth Social post . “It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition.”
Stephanopoulos pressed Burgum to provide specifics in support of the president’s statement.
“You’ve reported that vandals caused the damage,” Stephanopoulos said. “The president has repeatedly claimed that vandals cut a 350-foot gash in the pool. That’s the claim that’s echoed in a legal filing by your department. What specific evidence do you have to back up that claim?”
“Well, we have the actual cuts that were made into the industrial liner,” Burgum said. “And that’s… been measured out. So, that’s just a fact that that’s what we’ve got to go back and repair.”
“That there’s a 350-foot gash?!” Stephanpoulos said.
“Well, it’s multiple gashes that add up to 350 feet across that,” Burgum said. "And again, some of this happened early on. …we’ve installed more cameras.

Carlos Giménez, a Republican congressman from Florida, broke with the Trump administration on Sunday, calling on the White House to reconsider its push to eliminate temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitian migrants.
Returning some 350,000 Haitians to their chaotic, dangerous homeland following the US supreme court’s ruling that the Trump administration can cut off temporary legal protections, would be a grave error, Giménez said.
“Haiti is a failed state, and I think that deporting Haitians that are under TPS right now, back to Haiti, would be a huge mistake,” he told CBS News . Giménez also called for the re-instatement of TPS status to Venezuelans after the record-breaking twin earthquakes that struck north-central Venezuela on 24 June.
Temporary protected status, Giménez said, “is meant to safeguard those who are either fleeing countries that are failed states and are at risk of going back to them or countries that really can’t handle them right now, as is the case with Venezuela that has suffered a natural disaster”.
Giménez, whose family fled Cuba when he was seven, represents part of Miami-Dade county, home to some 110,000 residents of Haitian ancestry.
