President Donald Trump told reporters outside Air Force One on Wednesday, Aug. 12, that he “would love to run” for a third term, but ultimately conceded that “the law is very strong” about barring it.
The 80-year-old president has repeatedly proposed the idea of serving a third term , sometimes in jest, including on July 24 at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner .
“I won three times now I’m going to do it again,” the president said sarcastically at the dinner as he placed a red “Trump 2028” hat on his head, the likes of which he has been selling for more than $50 .

Donald Trump’s administration has insisted for months that the Kennedy Center stands to lose millions of dollars without his name on the building after losing several legal battles to rename the venue after himself.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for renovations as part of a plan announced by the president earlier this year, which was blocked by a federal judge and is tied up in ongoing litigation. That plan included putting Trump’s name on the white marble facade, in front of the name of the assassinated former president, by renaming the venue The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
But under the resolution approved by the board Thursday, Trump’s name will appear on the building to thank the president for the multi-million dollar renovations. An inscription will read “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump” — directly below the sign.
“This morning’s decision to close the Center and the surprise agenda item to put Donald Trump’s name back on the building was more of the same,” said Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, who is suing to stop the building’s closure and Trump-led renovations. “This latest development is a transparent effort to circumvent the Court’s ruling, and flies in the face of the statutes that Congress passed.”

That pattern made it look like U.S. imports from China had dropped , but enabled Beijing to continue growing its manufacturing sector in ways that could challenge U.S. factories and employment.
Peter Navarro , the White House trade adviser, told reporters on a conference call that China is laundering its exports through more than 40 countries, though he claimed that the issues raised in the report were really more about other nations enabling the avoidance of tariffs.

The memo directs the Pentagon and the Navy to present Trump with plans to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, also known as EMALS, within two months. It also says the Ford-class carrier’s electromagnetic weapons elevators should be replaced.
The ships have been designed around the EMALS and that type of elevator. Changing it isn’t like swapping a Goodrich tire for a Goodyear tire.

U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Harvard University over antisemitism, according to Thursday court filings.
The lawsuit, filed in March by the U.S. Justice Department, argued that the institution violated civil rights law by failing to address antisemitism on campus. The Trump administration aimed to freeze Harvard’s federal grants and seek repayment of funds already distributed.
In his ruling, Stearns said the Trump administration didn’t adequately prove that the university had violated civil rights law, claiming that the evidence provided was “too isolated and episodic.”
The government issued the notification of noncompliance on June 30, 2025, but almost all of the violations the Trump administration referenced in the complaint occurred in the 2023-2024 school year, with only three incidents occurring after the case was filed.
The judge concluded that the government couldn’t seek financial damages. He reassured the government that the ruling won’t create the “havoc” they had warned about.
“If comfort is needed, the court’s ruling does not have as broad an impact as the Government asserts,” Stearns said.
Spokespeople at Harvard and the U.S. Department of Justice didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Harvard’s lawyers previously argued that the court should dismiss the case because the Trump administration has ignored Harvard’s own efforts to address antisemitism on campus.
The lawyers argued that the federal government hasn’t been able to prove that Harvard has continued to create a hostile environment for students or was deliberately indifferent toward Jewish or Israeli students.
**The university said the lawsuit repeats arguments from previous cases it has won.
“This litigation is a continuation of the Government’s ongoing campaign of retaliation against Harvard for refusing to capitulate to government demands and for exercising its First Amendment rights,” the Harvard lawyers said.**

Trump’s toady Michael Cohen (I think) described Trump poring obessively through patterns for the curtains that were to hang in one of his businesses. Given Trump’s failure as a businessman, I suspect his obsession is just his way of exerting control.

Oddly enough, the “Trump-class” battleship that he fantasizes about is supposed to use railguns. The problem with that idea is that railguns are mostly vaporware right now. Yes, you can get a railgun to fire but turning it into a weapon you can reuse multiple times on a platform bouncing around in seawater is a very different story. Although I am no expert on railgun design (nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night) I am confident that this is a problem that will not be solved in Trump’s lifetime.

Not only is the old steam catapult technology less powerful and less reliable than EMALS, it takes a lot more manpower to operate, at a time when the Navy is short of manpower. From an AP report on the same topic:

Sometimes I see people wonder why erstwhile US allies and friends don’t openly denounce Trump and try to “help”, and this is exactly why they don’t.
When somebody punches themselves in the dick and declares it is a great idea and the people around them don’t break out the straitjackets and instead declare what a masterful strike it was, you’re not dealing with a sane or competent people or leader. Why even get involved in that?
