In Trump World (ewww…) every encounter/transaction has a winner and a loser. This applies to war all the way down to a handshake. There can never be more than one winner. There is one winner and everyone else is a loser.

President Donald Trump contradicted Vice President JD Vance on Monday after the vice president asserted last week that the administration’s top priority amid the Iran war was to keep the price of oil and gas down for Americans.
In a social media post on Monday morning, Trump said that the “number one Goal is, and always will be” that Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon.
Last Thursday, Vance laid out a different order of priorities on Fox News, saying that “goal No. 1” for the administration amid the war was to “keep oil and gas cheap for Americans all over our country.”
“And then obviously, goal No. 2 is ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon,” he added. “I feel confident we’re accomplishing both of those goals.”
I’m curious what evidence he has the vanity war is accomplishing either of those supposed goals.

A US guided-missile destroyer reportedly spent four days adrift and without power in the South China Sea in July, furthering concerns about strain being placed on deployed military members.
The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer which had been sailing with the George Washington carrier strike group, was reported to have been towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines, according to the US Naval Institute News, an independent military publication.
The 10,000-ton destroyer lost power after what a spokesperson with the US seventh fleet called “an engineering casualty involving its generators”, resulting in a loss of power.
That loss of power meant sailors were without galley services, toilets and air conditioning, Commander Matthew Comer told USNI News in a statement. Another vessel, USS Robert Smalls, the cruiser attached to the strike group, had to help provide meals for the crew.
Comer said that the Benfield lost power on 24 July and was towed on 28 July. Power was restored two days later.
Why shouldn’t the ships be adrift? The rest of the administration is, especially the idjit at the top of it.

In 2019, the Republican took steps to cancel U.S. military exercises near the peninsula while echoing Pyongyang’s rhetoric, criticizing the exercises as “very provocative” and “inappropriate.”
After losing his 2020 re-election bid and preparing for a White House comeback, Trump’s belligerence toward Seoul by some measures managed to get worse . The Republican referred to South Korea as “an enemy ” of the U.S. on matters of trade — despite the fact that his own administration struck a trade deal with South Korea — adding that he believed “it’s time we stop ” helping our Korean allies.

Trump went on to complain about South Korea not participating in his war with Iran (he labeled it “the Denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran”), which ostensibly shouldn’t even be necessary, given how often he’s declared victory in that conflict.
A day later, at an unrelated event in the Oval Office, Trump kept this going, telling reporters on Monday afternoon that he’d spoken to the North Korean dictator over the last 24 hours, before again complaining about our South Korean allies.
As part of the exchange, the Republican said he wants South Korea to pay $10 billion to cover the cost of the military exercises. (Trump made similar comments in 2019 . Vipin Narang, an associate professor at MIT who follows the Korean peninsula, said at the time , “Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a shakedown.”)

But if the online statement reflects reality in any meaningful way, it’s another regressive step for a White House that’s gone to breathtaking lengths to alienate U.S. allies. As The Atlantic’s Tom Nichols summarized , “Scaling back the exercise is, of course, an insane decision, which does nothing but hurt an ally, and tempt an adversary to think — correctly — that American leadership is feckless. … The Chinese and the Russians and the North Koreans are certain to draw the appropriate lessons from this deranged policy. They have been shown, yet again, that when Trump fails, he hurts those he feels safe hurting.”
Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, went further, accusing the president of “appeasement.”
Reed’s written statement added, “This is another inane, haphazard decision by President Trump and his chaotic administration. America’s alliances are built on trust and strength. When President Trump cuts military exercises to flatter a dictator or punishes South Korea for declining to join a war he started, all of our allies — and adversaries — think that America’s commitments are negotiable. Kim Jong Un has won a propaganda victory and South Korea, one of our strongest allies, has been punished for no reason beyond Trump’s ego.
“China and Russia are watching how easily this president abandons America’s allies, and they will remember it the next time they test us.”

The U.S. Navy is weighing a major revamp of the design of its new class of aircraft carriers to better suit the desires expressed by President Trump as the White House continues to wade into the designs of naval warships.
The Navy is performing an internal review to weigh the possibility of moving the multistory aircraft carrier’s command center tower, known as the “island,” toward the middle of the vessel to better match the aesthetic of older warships, a former senior U.S. official familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, told The Hill on Sunday.
The review, which was kick-started in part because of Trump’s concerns about the aesthetics of the Ford-class aircraft carriers, is due in “several” weeks, the official said.
The Pentagon referred The Hill to the Navy for comment. A Navy official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump ordered the Navy to “implement design changes to our future aircraft carriers” and that the service branch “has begun moving out on options to meet the President’s intent.”
The official pointed to the president’s national security memo from Thursday, which does not mention the internal review.
The island, which stands above the rest of the aircraft carrier and is most often located on the starboard side, is the nerve center for managing flight-deck operations, tactical command and the vessel’s navigation.
Hunter Stires, who served as the maritime strategist to the Navy secretary until last year, said warships are built to win in combat, not to win a “beauty pageant.”
“The placement of the island on the Ford class was chosen to support the ship’s design purpose of maximizing aircraft sortie generation — which for an aircraft carrier, directly translates to combat power. A good-faith exploration of future carrier design based on real-world operational requirements is one thing,” Stires told The Hill on Sunday.
“Expending millions of taxpayer dollars and the time and energy of the Navy’s engineering organizations redesigning the nation’s premier capital ship to indulge the president’s aesthetic whims is not only wasteful and abusive, it exemplifies President Trump’s evident contempt for America’s fighting sailors,” Stires said.

The president delivered Monday’s version the day after he announced the US would reduce military exercises with South Korea – citing his “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and also mentioning that South Korea declined to participate in the US war with Iran.

A northern California county that has become a hotbed of activism for those who sow doubts about the reliability of voting machines plans to hire Tina Peters, the prominent Colorado election denier recently released from prison, to work on elections.
Clint Curtis , the top election official in Shasta county, told the Guardian he plans to hire Peters as a consultant to replace Brent Turner, his top deputy, who has been on medical leave. He said Peters would not have access to the county’s voting system and did not directly respond when asked what her responsibilities would be. Plans to hire Peters, who is still on parole and must receive permission to travel outside of Colorado, were first reported by Action News Now .

Aug 17 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Monday blocked a Trump administration plan to relocate the new FBI headquarters to Washington, D.C., rather than in nearby Maryland, which had been picked in 2023 to host the building.
U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang sided with Maryland’s attorney general and a county in ruling the administration had unlawfully scrapped a plan to construct a new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt, Maryland, and diverted money approved by Congress for that project to an alternate location, the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington.
The judge said the selection of Ronald Reagan Building violated measures passed by Congress in 2022 and 2023 that required the General Services Administration to pick from one of three short-listed sites outside of Washington.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision, unanimously observing that Chattah is “not lawfully serving” as acting U.S. Attorney in Nevada under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, joined the ranks of numerous courts across the country in rejecting the Trump administration’s sidestepping of the U.S. Senate’s advice and consent role.
Rather than going through that constitutional process to fill these top federal prosecutorial positions on a permanent basis, the DOJ has time and again tried to transform loyalist interim U.S. attorneys facing expiration of their 120-day stints into acting U.S. attorneys with several more months on the job — in some cases by firing their court-appointed replacements in a time of vacancy.
U.S. Circuit Judge Eric Miller, a Donald Trump appointee, was clear that the DOJ “cannot” make Chattah the acting U.S. attorney just by firing the first assistant U.S. attorney — or second-in-command — who was in place.
“The maneuvers used to extend Chattah’s time atop the U.S. Attorney’s Office are not unique to the District of Nevada. The Attorney General has employed similar—though not always identical—tactics to extend the service of other temporary appointees who have not been confirmed by the Senate. The district court’s reasoning was consistent with that of the other courts to consider those tactics, every one of which has concluded that they violate the limits imposed by the FVRA,” the opinion said.
