WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court opened a path Monday for possible implementation of President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting mail-in voting, though it remains unclear how much can be put in place before the fast-approaching midterm elections.
The decision leaves room for additional court challenges that could further slow Trump’s order, and other similar cases have already been filed. The U.S. Postal Service laid out how it would implement the order last week, but time is running short to impose major changes. North Carolina is sending out ballots Sept. 4 overseas and to military voters, and other states will quickly follow suit in just a few weeks.
The Supreme Court’s conservative majority didn’t decide the legality of Trump’s order, instead ruling that states who sued did not have the legal right to challenge it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is preparing to revoke the business and tourism visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum status in the United States. If it happens, the move would be the largest single mass revocation of visas in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.
Unless challenged or revised, the State Department is expected to announce in the coming weeks the revocation of so-called B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 whose holders have sought asylum or are now seeking asylum, according to State Department documents obtained by The Associated Press and two U.S. officials. The action will be taken in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security.
“We are coordinating with DHS to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the United States claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently,” said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
He declined to comment on the number of visas that might be revoked, saying "as the process will be ongoing, the number of revocations remains dynamic and will be done on a rolling basis.”

Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office is failing to secure convictions in an “increasingly alarming number” of federal cases in Washington, D.C., according to a new CNN report detailing a string of mistrials and acquittals.
The network reported Monday that Pirro’s office has struggled to persuade federal juries even in violent crime cases prosecutors believed presented relatively straightforward evidence, an unusual losing streak that has alarmed current and former members of Washington’s legal community.

The MS-13 prosecution is reportedly part of a broader pattern. Before the April retrial, Pirro’s office had secured convictions in only four of eight federal jury trials since January, according to CNN. In nearly a dozen subsequent cases, two defendants were acquitted and four trials ended with deadlocked juries.Federal criminal trials nationwide typically result in convictions roughly 90% of the time, according to federal judiciary statistics cited by CNN.

Immigration lawyers say the practice is being used as a legal loophole to indirectly return some asylum seekers to countries they fled.
The group who refused to get off the plane in Liberia on Thursday include four Cuban men, a Brazilian man and a Cameroonian woman, the person and lawyer said.
A Honduran deportee aboard the flight said the group refused to disembark, saying Liberia was “not their country” and that they would face danger there. They were then separated from the others, he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals.
He said the other passengers got off in Liberia because they feared officers would force them.

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to take immediate steps to return to the United States a man who testified against people affiliated with Mexican drug cartels. The judge found that immigration authorities likely violated his constitutional due process rights when they revoked his protection from deportation and removed him to Mexico, where he has gone into hiding.
In a memorandum opinion issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted a temporary restraining order requiring the government to facilitate the return of a plaintiff identified only as John Doe, who had previously received protection under the Convention Against Torture (CAT) because of the risk he would face if sent to Mexico.
The court said an immigration judge granted Doe deferral of removal in July 2024 after finding he was more likely than not to be tortured if returned to Mexico. According to the ruling, that determination was based on Doe’s “substantial assistance” to the U.S. Department of Justice and his testimony against defendants affiliated with Mexican drug cartels.

Pardoned Jan. 6 rioter and far-right influencer Jake Lang was arrested in Minneapolis on Saturday on suspicion of rioting outside city hall, according to the Minneapolis Police Department and Mayor Jacob Frey.
Police said Lang and several other people arrived in two vehicles at Minneapolis City Hall just before noon on Saturday. The two vehicles then drove up onto the sidewalk towards a crowd of people.
Lang could be seen in videos posted to social media (NSFW) in the truck bed of one of the vehicles holding a sign with a racial slur on it. Footage also shows Lang and other activists clashing with counterprotestors outside city hall.
Officers responded to the scene and attempted to get the vehicles off the sidewalk and out of the area, according to police.
The two vehicles fled the scene and were eventually tracked down and stopped, police said. All the occupants of both vehicles were arrested on suspicion of rioting, according to Minnesota Public Radio .
Lang was booked into the Hennepin County Jail and is being held without bail, according to jail records.
