A few years ago when asked what their first impression of France was, I heard Americans say “they all wear black”. Now it seems the craze has contaminated the whole of North America. Black T-shirt, black coat, black dress, black everything. And that’s been lasting ten years now. Has this anything to do with that gloomy gothic fad ? Black is sadness, sorrow, mourning. It’s the symbol of death.
Join me and help me find some good slang words to say how much I hate all black garbs.
Worst of all is dressing all black a 3-year old, angel-faced little girl. I’ve seen it and I think it’s plain stupidity in my not so humble opinion.
If you happen, dear fellow Doper, to wear a black shirt, note it’s not you I despise, but your DOGGONE CRAPPY BLACK SHIRT.
Oh! One more thing. I have a black shirt for sale. Any takers ?
I used to wear it along with a white sport coat, white pants, white shoes, a pink necktie… and a pink carnation, of course . (You don’t like that style ? Go ahead and tell the world!)
My sense of fashion begins and ends at ‘Will this keep me comfortable and not get me arrested or laughed at in public?’ If it passes that test, I wear it. Going all-black isn’t something I’ve done yet, but I do tend to muted tones and blue jeans because I can grab things at random and not look like a dork.
I don’t associate colors with emotions, really. Black can be a very utilitarian color and that’s how I usually judge colors.
This got me to thunkin’. How much black clothing do I actually own?
1 Black hooded sweatshirt
1 Black Red Wings practice jersey (and isn’t that appropriate these days)
1 Black Navy Peacoat
1 pair of Doc Martens boots
Well, it may be because I’m already thin. If I looked any thinner, I would be invisible. And my relatively bouncy persona doesn’t mesh well with the goth crowd.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s not the french I hate, it’s the lack of bathing and their sick love for Jerry Lewis.
I have tons of black pieces, because they’ll match almost anything and most of my shoes are black too.
I say we band together and fight against the true evil on the fashion scene—cutesy embellished casual wear!
You all know what I’m talking about. Poly-knit glorified sweatsuits with little embroidered kittens across the boobs or americana hearts stitched about the wrists and ankles. The owners of these abortions seem to also favor the ‘high-waisted 80’s chinos with tie-neck sweaters and penny loafers’ look.
A popular misconception. Dark colors appear to recede, so a dark color which flatters you will be slimming. If you wear black well, it helps make you look slimmer. If black does not flatter you, and you wear lots of black in an attempt to appear more slender, the effect is of a person who is desperately trying to appear more slender and not succeeding very well.
But I don’t think that’s what’s going on with the black fad in the States. My admittedly limited exposure last time I was on the other side of the pond led me to believe that the overuse of black was due to another popular misconception, namely, that the sophisticated people are wearing black, so if I wear black I will look sophisticated…
Brother! I salute you! I knew I couldn’t be alone in the world.
For the fashion-impaired among us, black can be very safe. Matches anything. Looks decent on me, by all accounts. I won’t accidentally pair it with something that goes badly with it. Black it is.
What’s wrong with black? I don’t buy into this “black is mourning” thing. You like to wear bright colors? By all means, wear bright colors. Leave me and my fashionless bretheren alone.
Gah! This stereotype bothers me. There are plenty of bouncy, vivacious people in the goth crowd. In fact, most are NOT lugubrious Edgar Allen Poes, or rebellious teenagers.
Re: the OP. I don’t really care much about what you think of what I wear unless you decide to be rude and tell me to my face uninvited. I’ll wear what I please and you wear what you please.
Hm, I do wear black, and am fat, but the 2 are not cause/effect - I happen to like some black clothing [I am a big fan of ‘that little black dress’ concept of certain types of classic clothing are universally in good taste when accessorized properly]
On the other hand, I also tend to dress monochromatically, as in brown silk pants, brown silk shirt, brown socks and brown loafers of complimentary browns, though I have a ‘basic work wardrobe’ of 3 identical pairs of pants [one black, one brown and one blue, same style silk bought at the same time] that mix and match with 5 identical silk sirts [white, black, brown, orange, red, blue - not every shirt goes with every pants, but whatever=)] and identical models of loafer in black and brown=) and I have 3 pair of casual pants, black jeans, blue jeans and khakis, with black sneakers. I do have a full spectrum of assorted Tshirts for with the casual pants though=) Just I dress very conservatively for work having been in the cattle\\customer service industry for the past 10 years=)
Right now, I’m wearing black jeans, black socks, a black t-shirt over a black and white pinstriped dress shirt, and a purple tie.
I’m not a goth, I’m not hopping on any fad, and I’m not depressed. I just think I happen to look pretty good in black (and purple [and a bit of eyeliner, but that’s another story]).
Lots and lots of SHOES are black, also. I noticed this while trying to expand my “business casual” wardrobe a few days ago. I could find several pairs of shoes that fit me in black… but I already had a pair of black dress shoes… I had to hunt through several stores to find decent shoes in color. If people can only find black shoes, they’ll want to match their clothes to the shoes.
Sez you. I up with this enough in high school when all the little preps wearing lime green and fuschia (like that’s a good idea) would come around and ask “Why do you wear black? Are you depressed? Do you think about death all the time?” No, I’m wearing what I think I look good in, what I’m comfortable in, what I feel like wearing as opposed to what the Izod poilice say I should be (yes, Iwent to high school in the eighties). If I were weraing what you’re wearing, then I’d be depressed.
I still wear black (often) now as well. And I will even if it happens t be trendy .

I used to wear it along with a white sport coat, white pants, white shoes, a pink QUOTE]
For what it’s worth in many cultures white is the colour of mourning. Why are you being so morbid ?
I agree with the OP. Black is just depressing, and a splash of color is more cheery. So I’m going to throw out my black tux, and get one that looks more stylish. How about powder blue? Or mauve? With ruffles. Lots and lots of ruffles.
