This is a question that occurred to me as well. Would the candidates be restricted to new songs released/performed post December 31. 1999, or would older songs performed by performers debuting post December 31, 1999 be allowed? (I think older songs covered by performers that started in the 60’s through the 90’s would be against the spirit of the poll)
I think the main issue will be keeping out older songs. Not submitted on purpose, but submitted because the poster is “sure it’s a song from this century” because that’s how they remember it.
Policing the a-z polls was self evident, but we may have to have a team effort of all the posters to police this poll (which I am in favor of - our “ultimate poll” looks like someone just listed the most played songs on the local classic rock station)
I’ve found it harder to identify when a song was written (and by who) than when it was first released, unless the song is well-known enough to have its own wiki page.
Here’s a potential resource. I used it to remind me of a-z songs I liked, but never bothered to add to any playlists (the Songs selection is alphabetized). Based on my experience with the alphabetic list, the list of songs is large, but not comprehensive.
Ask people to post the year of release with each song they nominate. It will make it easier for us (collectively) to police. Also, there will undoubtedly be some unintended covers nominated; sometimes it’s hard to tell if songs are new or rehashed.
If you want to drag it out extend the game further you could break it into decades: 2000-2009, 2010-2019, and 2020-2023 (nominating three songs rather than five for the last one). Could even do 1990-1999 if you’re feeling frisky.
If you don’t want to do that, it’s cool - I don’t want you to feel like I’m assigning homework.
