Ever since Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side were put to bed a few years ago, there’s been a definite lack of anything truly funny on the funny pages. My favorite strip of all time is Bloom County.
Can anyone tell me if there’s anything currently out there, in print or on the Web, that can compare to these great strips? Please, no Dilbert lovers need apply.
It just doesn’t appeal to me, for some reason. I dunno. Now, I’m totally with Bun-Bun’s mission in life. If he wants to lay the smackdown on telemarketers and Santa, more power to the brother!
The online versions of both the San Jose Mercury news and the Philadelphia Inquirer allow you to customize your own comics page. I’d recommend that you play with your choices until you find what you like.
(Oh and IMHO, Bloom County was overrated. Calvin and Hobbes ruled, however.)
Current Faves:
Bizarro, Doonesbury, Fusco Brothers, Family Circle (JUST KIDDING, BWHA-HA-HA-HA), Sherman’s Lagoon, and yes, Dilbert
Weekly, at Salon:
Tom the Dancing Bug, Story Minute, This Modern World
Others:
For Better or For Worse, Mister Boffo, Funky Winkerbean, Mother Goose and Grimm, The Norm, Peanuts Classics, Pickle, Sally Forth, Zits
No suggestions here…sorry.
I guess I just stopped reading the ‘funnies’ altogether when they pulled Calvin. There is nothing there for me anymore. I used to read every day, and would check several of the others just to keep abreast, but there was only one true draw.
I also miss The Far Side, Shoe, Tumbleweeds, and Pogo.
