My last attempt at watching this show came two weeks ago. The main plot (Brown trying to escape from Spain) was way goofy,; the subplot (Dennis Haysbert’s daughter wanting to quit school and enlist) was way too soapy.
But most of all, the running subplot about the wife of one of the unit having the affair with their C.O.–I’m sorry, but I find that absolutely offensive in the extremis ! Now, I’m no super-patriot, nor was I in the service, but there’s just no justification for this storyline. I mean, my God, your husband is out there risking his life for freedom, democracy and whatever else is good and decent, and you’re screwing his commanding officer??? And as far as Capt. Terminator goes, I’m sorry, but does honor have no place in your command? And from what I’ve seen, the whole thing is being treated in a very ho-hum-s***-happens kind of way.
Unless they both get killed in a terrorist bombing, I’ve had it with this show!
I found that I’d had enough after just two episodes. I really wanted to like this show, but I didn’t. Even the presence of Dennis Haysbert, one of my favorite actors, did not cause me to want to continue watching “The Unit.”
I’m still watching. I thought the episode in Spain was kinda dumb, but last week’s show was much better-- too bad you missed it. They also worked the affair into the wives’ plot in an interesting way, too. Although it seems like everyone (except the happy, cheatin’ couple) seem to be almost too perfect, I think the writers are setting things up for some surprises. Maybe a mission or two will actually fail at some point.
I like the show. I don’t find the affair all that hard to take. I see it as setting up some conflicts and/or mayhem once the soldier gets the dope that his wife and the colonel are cheating on him. I think the new gal will help that to happen without realizing the shitstorm she’s creating.
Haysbert is fun to watch and the situations remind me of the old Mission:Impossible with Peter Graves and Martin Landau.
Mamet and Ryan seem like an odd team to be creating something like this, but I have yet to feel cheated enough not to watch it. I usually TiVo House while watching it and then TiVo Boston Legal while watching Thief. That helps make Tuesdays the busiest TV night in our home.
I hope it stays on long enough for some major action to develop on the home front. Haysbert’s wife has been holding the lid on too well and I suspect the new gal will help blow it off any time.
I like it. Good action, soapy stuff for the soap fans. Dennis Haysbert. What more could ya want?
BTW, if a show about police officers with recurring characters and continuing storylines is a “cop opera” and a show about cowboys with recurring characters and continuing storylines is a “horse opera” would that make The Unit an…Op Opera?
I am surprised that people have such a problem with the affair storyline. It’s a drama. Is it because it portrays an army wife as being… less than a perfect yellow ribbow chocolate cookies type?
I think the over all the ‘at home’ stories are a major waste of air time but the actual Unit ops stories could be cool. Think of how much more exciting an complex the Embassy bugging episode could have been if half the episode wasnt’ devoted to Mrs. Entitlemen, Newbie wife and Blondie McWhoresen.
