The Voice [Season 2, Spring 2012]

What about naming it after one of the judges?

Digital Spy has a section of news articles on The Voice.

Woah.

((Disclosure: I only watch the actual singing.))

I was stunned that RaeLynn advanced and Adley Stump didn’t. Just stunned. I thought it was very clear that Adley had a better voice and more talent and just simply lacked stage presence. RaeLynn clearly looked and acted more like a country star, that much was clear. But her voice was all over the place and I didn’t “buy” what she was selling, essentially. But I’m not a big country fan, so I might have missed the mark. Although Christina agreed with me.

ETA: Also, I have no idea who lets Christina wear those clothes. Ick.

I totally agree! I thought there was no question that Adley would be picked over RaeLynn. Blake is nuts.

She should lose that silly hat, but the cleavage is appreciated!

(o):p(o) <-motorboat smiley

I was surprised Christina didn’t pick Anthony Evans, the preacher’s son. The guy singing against him was too smug for my taste.

Adley seemed a lot better than Rae Lynn. I agree Blake didn’t make a good decision there.

The talent is so high this year that I have a hard time picking in the battle rounds. I tend to cheer for the people I like in the rehearsals because we see their personality.

Recap of tonights first Battle Rounds.

Totally agreed - I was shocked that he chose RaeLynn, who seemed to be singing in some bad southern accent. I thought her performance was a bad joke.

Christina’s duet of Chris Mann and Monique Benabou singing Celine Dion’s “The Power of Love” was one of the worst performances of the night, I thought. Chris was technically very good, but I just didn’t like his voice. Monique was okay, but their duet was a disaster - neither of the voices were relating to the other at all.

Her second duet with the two black guys was also terrible, I thought - that was a whole lotta oversinging going on there.

I liked Angie Johnson better than Cheese-ah, but what the hell - I can keep on making fun of her name now.

It seems that Blake can’t resist an underage girl with a quirky voice (and I LIKED Xenia). That said, Blake just kind of sucks at the battle rounds. Terrible song choices, terrible matches. Ironic was a hot mess too.

I was too distracted by how much I hate that Celine Dion song to even focus on the singing. Didn’t care whether Angie or Cheesa won, was glad to see Tony Lucca stay, even if I didn’t find the battle all that thrilling.

I *loved *the gospel-off.

Rae Lynn was mentored by Blake’s wife. Could be she saw something special in the girl that could be drawn out with training.

I’m not really sure Rae Lynn will have enough time to get better. She was pretty bad last night.

I don’t even remember who the coach was (either Cee Lo or Christina), but during the initial practice with the two women, the accompanist said something like “I think that’s a good key”, and one of them says to take it up a half. First of all, listen to your professional accompanist.

Then they cut to one of the isolation camera bits, and Miss Up a Half is worried because her rival said “let’s take it up a whole step”. Apparently she agreed, and then was saying that she was having a hard time with the upper notes. Then why did you agree to take it up? Couldn’t you ask to take it back down?

I’d say I don’t understand the push to sing higher, but I’m a baritone with delusions of tenor, so I don’t have much scope to poke fun (although tenor choral parts tend to be more interesting then bass/baritone).

I think she ended up winning though, so I guess she stretched into the range.

Cheesa is good with the big notes, but I think she’s absolutely horrid at anything lower than full-on belting. I don’t think she’ll be around that much longer.

I liked Anthony’s voice better in the Keys’ song. Ironic was a mess.

She did a Miranda song for the auditions, and he’s said several times that she reminds him of Miranda. No way was she going home.

She was indeed very bad, but I was so annoyed by the other one’s relentless cheerleaderyness (and downright offended by the headbands) that I really couldn’t bring myself to be outraged by it.

Yeah, RaeLynn was a mess, Adley was far better vocally to my ear. But I’m not a country fan anyway, so I don’t see how my opinion matters.

Yeah, who lets Christina wear clothes? Come on!

Yeah, that hat was preposterous. But did you notice, Christian has boobs? (Apparently she doesn’t want anyone to miss it.)

That was my opinion of him from the very begining audition, so I am predisposed to want him to lose. But he had the better voice in their competition.

I found the battle rounds last year to be some of the hardest calls to make. You would think putting them directly against each other in the same song would point out the flaws, but when both sides do well it really makes the calls that much harder.

As DianaG said, Blake said she reminds him of Miranda. I think that really colored his perception more than anything. Plus, he does love the “quirky” voices.

Yes, it is supposed to be a negotiated agreement. There seems to be a bit of gamesmanship going on with people trying to “prove” they are the better singer with the work on the duets. The thing is, the goal should be to put both singers on as even a footing as possible, so each can shine. If you’re not doing that, you’re not being fair. So when the coaches pick their contestant matches and the song to match, they have to look at song styles and voice types to try to be balanced. When finding the key and all that, they have to find where both their ranges work. Obviously having a bigger range is a benefit in that.

And Total Eclipse of the Heart is a song with a big range, with power and softness, low and high tones. It’s not an easy song. Great pick for them to battle over.

I think Blake screwed the pooch when he selected RaeLynn over Adley. I thought Tony Lucca and Chris Cauley were very close and I only picked Tony over Chris for sentimental reasons. I think Chris Mann outsung Monique, and agree something didn’t quite work between them. Adam made the wrong call on Cheesa, Angie did better on that song. Though Cheesa did manage to pull the high note. Ironic was a total mess, both had pitch issues throughout. Jordis couldn’t seem to figure out how to even sing the song. But I liked her better from the auditions, so am glad she went through, though if she can’t nail down the next song better she will be gone. :frowning: On the final battle, Jesse had the better voice, and wasn’t straining as hard at the notes. Anthony did a good performance, but was outmatched. (Dammit, Mr Smug won.)

On a separate note, RaeLynn is from Baytown, so the local news was carrying the story on how she did. I was trying to avoid spoilers - I want to see the competition play out, not just get the results. I had to pause and fast forward the news to try to skip the story. Grrrr. STOP RUINING THE SHOW!!!

I assume the judges sit down and pick out all their pairings and songs at one time. That way they can mix and match on paper till they get something that works for all matches, vs doing it sequentially and perhaps ending up with an odd mismatch the last set. It also makes sense for them to bring in one coach on one day and run those competitors through in series, then the next coach the next day.

Team Blake
Rae Lynn?!!
Seriously Blake??!?!!?
Not only did Adley have the sort of voice that could cross genres and hence win this season. Rae Lynn sounds exactly like the SNL impersonation of Miley Cyrus.

If you hadn’t picked Jordis I would have punched you in the nuts right through my TV

Team Adam
Meh. Neither one real impressive. I guess I would have picked Chris.

Team Real Xtina
First Battle = Boring! Between Chris and Monique, I would pick being between Christina’s boobs as plasticy as they are.

Second Battle = Exciting! It was the only battle that actually looked and sounded like a battle. I think Jesse had the edge so I’m glad he moved on.

Team Red (why is it not the color green?)
Take your pick. Angie had the better voice but Cheesa had something Angie didn’t. Not exactly passion but something. You know Cee-Lo goes with the non-traditional so eventhough I would have picked Angie, I could see why the pussy-stroker went with Cheesa.

Because red is Cee Lo’s favorite color, and probably some ironic thing on his part.

Jewel looked like she was in pain listening to that Baker rehearse. That was beyond bad. This dude really needed to get zinged on Idol. He didn’t even realize his phrasing of the words were unintelligible? Wow!

I channel surfed during this one. There was three songs that just weren’t my thing. Especially that Nirvana song. I barely. could stand their stuff when they performed it. Copy cats on a reality show don’t need to sing Nirvana.

Sandwich dude was way in over his head too. He did a lot better than the baker but there was no question who would get picked in the battle round.

Best tonight is Kim Yarbrough. She’s going to be tough for anyone to beat. She reminds me a lot of last seasons Frenchie.

I just got up to “Pumped up Kicks”. That was a horrible song choice for them. I thought Lex was just slightly better. But that’s not saying much. And as I’m typing this, I just heard that Charlotte was picked.

I also thought that the father singing “Chain of Fools” was just slightly better than his opponent. But once again the judge went the other way. I’m 0 for 2 so far.

Kim and Jamar Rogers were both very, very good tonight (I didn’t catch all the performances). I can see them being the final two at this point.

Hey, Jamar Rogers is Danny Gokey’s friend!

Recap of this weeks Battle Rounds.

I’m totally Team Jamar. I don’t expect him to win, but I love his voice (although I’m dying for them to test his range a little) and dammit he’s plucky. I was pleased that Adam acknowledged how messed up it was that none of them originally turned around for him, because I remember during his audition thinking “WTF is WRONG with you people?!?!?”

Christina was never gonna pick poor Gerald, but then Gerald had an uphill battle anyway because no matter how good he is (and he was damned good) Sera is young, pretty, and has the exact sort of voice that most people think of when they think “good singer”. (Don’t mistake me, I’m not maligning her, she IS an excellent singer, just not to my particular taste.) I think she’s probably our winner.

I was marginally rooting for Lex, but the poor girl might have died of apoplexy if she had to go through much more of this anyway.

Good on Kim, bring it home for the grownups, baby!

Did anyone else think that Sarah was actually better, or was I just unable to overcome my disgust at Juliet looking like a $3 whore?

Blake has *never *heard Heart-Shaped Box? Really? His bio says nothing about spending 1994 in a coma.
