Oh yeah–I remember him! Now I have to root against him.
Yes, he was atrocious. Horrendous. His blind audition was doing a Bob Dylan song, which he managed only because Bob Dylan is not exactly a great enunciator or singer himself. I hated his signing on the blind audition, think he should have been sent packing, hated he was picked for a team over some of the others that didn’t get picked, and can’t stand a thing about his singing. Ack! Then he’s paired against Linsey Pavao, whom also has a weird quality to her singing. At least with her, there were glimmers of things that I appreciated, and I liked listening to the song with captioning on so I learned some of the lyrics, but of the two of them, I kept thinking “Why can’t we exchange both of these for Geoff or Whitney back. I mean, I can’t see either of these standing up against some of the folks that were already sent home, nevermind Kim or Juliett.”
Yes, that really was an unfair song choice for him. The vocals are too high for his voice, and he just couldn’t hit them. If he’d dropped to a lower register he might could have done something, but Jamar just had better range and power and control. No brainer. No competition. I hope he makes tasty sandwiches.
Kim has power, range, and control. She’s precise without being stilted. She may be the one to beat this season.
I didn’t really care for either of them on the blind auditions, and this didn’t give me much to change my impressions. I liked when Lex went up high, but when she’s trying to do the sultry low breathy parts it just sounds like she’s whispery and dull. And really she just isn’t handling the limelight. Charlotte is sassy and fun, but I don’t care for her tone and styling. This is another pair I’d have booted both to make room for one of the other tight calls.
I liked Geoff better on that song, too. But Sera did a great job, so that one was a close call. Both of them were far better than Charlotte or Lindsey, nevermind Lex and baker Lee.
He did really well, so he’s got a strong chance on this. I’d say he could be in the top 4.
I think you mean Geoff, and I see your reasoning. As good as Geoff was, Sera was pretty good, and she was young and female, playing to Christina’s bias.
I also found it amusing that Geoff’s advantage was stated as his power, and Sera’s was her emotional connection. But both Adam and Cee Lo said that Geoff was really the one who connected emotionally to the song.
Sarah actually did very good. I liked Juliett a hair better, but I guess I like $3 whores. I don’t know that raspy is going to hold up to the technical quality of some of the others. Juliett has a vibe like Janis Joplin or Melissa Ethridge, so it certainly can work, but it may not ultimately satisfy the judges when the field includes R&B powerhouses. At least Sarah spruced up. She didn’t have to glam out to look 100% better than her blind audition.
It’s possible he just didn’t recognize the song, being that it was in a completely different style, and both singers had bizarre pronunciations.
I thought Sarah had way more range than Juliet, who seemed very one-note throughout that performance.
And I THOUGHT I recognized Jamar from somewhere! Funny how he got separated from his buddy on Idol, and then he gets paired up against someone who he clearly had become friendly with on this show for a battle.
He probably would have recognized it had the two sung it in the original style instead of the lounge version we got. Hell, I barely recognized the song myself.
In fact, quite a few songs got the lounge treatment. What the hell was up with that?
Lindsey seems to specialize in “lounge”. And the show, much as I love it, is still a “reality” singing competition, which means that it specializes in cheeze.
You have to admit though that “You need to really enunciate this Nirvana song” is pretty hilarious advice.
I did, thank you!
Jamar was on Idol?
Yeah, Jamar was on in 2009. During the Hollywood rounds they made a big deal about his friendship with Danny Gokey. Jamal was pretty good, and he seemed pretty sure of himself, too. It was a surprise when he was cut before the “top 36.”
Yeah, it’s not like Kurt Cobain was known for being clear and precise.
To me, it seems like sometimes some of them try too hard to enunciate and get odd em pha sis on the wrong syl a ble. But Lee was particularly unintelligible.
I remember Jamar. How cool that he has ended up on the Voice.
I liked Chain of Fools, the other songs. not so much.
I think they cut him just to make Gokey cry. He was just as talented. I don’t remember him pimping his sob story on Idol, though.
Maybe his sob story was overshadowed by Danny’s dead wife.
Team Blake
His are the most interesting decisions because based on the Miley err… Miranda err… RaeLyn (I may start calling her MaeLyn) debacle and the comments he makes about what other mentor’s singers he would pick, I have no clue who he’ll go with.
This had all of the appearance of pairing up the two leftovers. Charlotte won and Blake picked the better singer. In fact the only contraversy was about Lex. I claim she looks like a fat Katy Perry and Mrs. Cad says its more Jennifer Goodwin (Once Upon a Time’s Snow White/Mary Margaret)
Team Xtina
Sara had Geoff beaten during the rehearsal and she didn’t lose the Battle Round. I don’t think she has what it takes to win it all.
As for the Nirvana song. I thinks there are times when a mentor picks a song/pairing to guaranty an outcome. With Lee singing Nirvana, you are going to get at best a really bad Kurt Cobain impersonation. What was shocking to me was Lindsay wasn’t all that great but she was better than Lee and so she moves on (cf. Team Adam)
Team Adam
Again, a song/pairing where the outcome is preodained. I mean how can PopLyfe-wannabe Whitney possibly beat mature soul-singer Kim on “No More Drama”? Well she did and even if you disagree, it was close enough that Whitney gets extra-credit points for singing out of her element while Kim did OK on a song she should have blown away. Since Adam doesn’t get the result he wants with the Battle Round, he chooses Kim anyways.
Team Red
Juliet “Rod Stewart with a Vagina” Simms vs. “Ugly” Sarah Golden. Let the battle begin.
Juliet sounds more like Janis than Rod and Sarah (who is not ugly but “confused” if ya know what I mean) sing Rod Stewart song. Predictable outcome. Even Blake choosing Sarah was no surprise.
Jamie vs Jamar. 3-1 with Blake the odd one out and Jamar wins. I get the feeling Jamar is seen as the next Jaview Colon so I’ll be interested in seeing what he does next round. Oh and despite being someone that has overcome something, I do not feel victorious.
That should have been clear from the first season, when he picked the two girls over the two guys because “I think I can have more effect on them”. Not who was better already. Yeah, he’s got a thing for chicks with quirky voices.
I don’t think that is intentional. Why would they bother picking someone for their team if they just want to off them in the battle rounds? The idea is to give each contestant his/her best chance, within the constraints of pairing them against someone else on the team. The coach has to review the list of contestants on the team, figure out how to pair them and what songs to pick. Is their a song list they have to pick from? I don’t think so, things are very diverse. I would imagine there are legitimate internal debates over how to pair them up. Put two similar people together, that way they have to push to beat their closest match. Put two different people together and try to find a song that is something of a middle ground, so neither has a strong advantage. In the end, the coach is going to have to select someone, and they want the strongest singer to go on for the next round of competitions.
Now maybe the song pick isn’t the best choice for one of the competitors. Maybe they don’t fit what you as a coach thought of them. Maybe they’re Lee, and they just can’t sing. Christina heard something she appreciated. Maybe it was just her efforts this time to pick the unusual, the different. I don’t think she intentionally set him up with the pairing or the song. It just worked out that way.
With Lee singing Bob Dylan, at best you had a really bad Bob Dylan impression. That got him picked for a team. Lee can’t sing. His tone is lousy, his enunciation is bizarre. He didn’t even realize his singing was unintelligible.
I wasn’t all that shocked, I wasn’t impressed by her audition, either. These were both WTF’s for me in the first place.
I grant you on this one that Juliet singing Rod does lean more to her forte. And Sarah did do well.
This is probably the one I would say was the most unfair pairing/song combo. Jamie sandwich guy just doesn’t have the voice for the song, certainly not the register. Offhand I can’t say what would have been better for him, but not duking out a powerhouse Foreigner hit.
Yeah, that was a bit rich. So, Jamar, is your winning a victory for Jamie, who had to overcome struggling to get by as a sandwich maker when he wants to be a singer?
I think she looks like a chubby Maggie Gyllenhaal.
I think Jamie Lono (sandwich guy) got completely screwed over. There was no way he was going to win that round.
But…he’s on Kickstarter trying to get the money to make an album. He’s already almost there.
I’m watching this season because of Jordis Unga. Granted she had a really crappy battle, but I love her for what she can do when she lets loose. Maybe I’m Amazed was strong in the blind audtion. And, when she was on Rockstar:INXS, she blew me away with Heart Shaped Box and especially Man Who Stole the World… Blake wants a rocker. I like Jordis. For me, far more convincing than nasally Juliet…
Man Who Stole the World- incredible cover
Heart Shaped Box
and for the hell of it
Baba O’Reilly
Am I the only one who thinks that Erin sounds like Carol Channing? She’s terrible. Not only CAN’T she sing, she looked ridiculous in that Wonder Woman-like costume. Her tremelo is too fast and it makes her sound like a Munchkin. Cee Lo has lost his mind on this one.
I can’t STAND her!
Like I said last week, I only watch the actual singing and post-commentary by the judges. So I don’t really have opinions on who is cooler or more deserving.
Blake is gross. I didn’t think I could be any more repulsed after Lex Land was dismissed last week. Cee Lo and Blake are purely driven by who is hot, unfortunately.
I was actively repulsed by Erin. Those brothers seem more mainstream, what with po-punk and alt-pop being “in”. I’m sad to see them go.
I have no idea what the judges are looking for. I thought Jonathan was selling believable shit and thought it was a fairly uneven matchup, IMO. I’m sad at the people advancing overall.
Jamie the sandwich guy was screwed by the song choice.
Did everyone else catch what I did – how they dressed Alyx and Jermaine as Khloe and Lamar (in their opening commercial for their show this season)?
I had no strong opinions on either Alyx and Jermaine. Both were decent if not particularly memorable; I guess I had a slight preference for Jermaine.
When Angel & Katrina started singing I stopped farting around on the computer and couldn’t tear my eyes from Angel. Her voice moved me. The hair on my arms stood up. Her voice was pure and smooth, no tremble, no shaking so common with all the other singers. I must be tone deaf or something. I dunno.
No preference of Erin or Gwen. Neither held a candle to Lex.
At least Pip was chosen.
I just googled Lex and skimmed her bio; apparently she’s had her songs featured in various TV shows like One Tree Hill and Private Practice. She has a real producer and has released a couple cd’s under him. So it’s not like she’s starving or not experiencing a modicum of success, so that helps.
Maybe it’s just what I saw on the show, but I don’t get the love for Lex. My wife has been a huge fan of hers for a while now and says that the show did not do her justice.
Nathan and Pip. Pip had the wider range and I agreed with Adam picking him. I also thought that he and Nathan made an awesome duo. By the way, what is Pip short for?
Shields brothers and Erin. Was Cee Lo high? Erin sucks. The brothers should have won. Hands down.
Ashley and Jonathas - I thought Ashley was slightly better. I also thought her and Jonathas also made a great duet.
Jermaine and Alex. I liked Jermain slightly better. And “Get out of my Dreams”? WTF? I, and everyone I knew made fun of that song when it came out.
Angel and Katrina. I thought Katrina’s voice was stronger and had more range.
Gwen and Erin - Erin’s voice as too rough and gravelly for me. I thought Gwen’s was much more pleasant. Frankly, I’m wondering how much Erin’s sick father influenced his decision. And it was sad to see “In Memory of Erin’s Father”.
