The Voice [Season 2, Spring 2012]

I continue to be absolutely mystified by the song choices on this show. Livin’ On a Prayer for a soul singer? A “country” version of Wakeup Call for a 17 year old girl? Paramore for, well, anyone ever? And ferchrissake, how many times do I need to hear that horrible Drake song, which (much like No Air) is a monotonous trifle and no sort of a showcase for any vocalist.

Team Blake:
Raelyn and Naia were hot messes, Jordis continues to disappoint, and I repeat, wtf with Jermaine singing Bon Jovi? Does Blake hate him that much? Charlotte may have been okay, I hate that song too much to be objective. Erin Willett was the only bright spot, but she absolutely *killed *it.

Team Xtina:
And in another wtf reiteration moment: why would you give a singer as talented as Sera that droning piece of crap Drake song? Chris Mann didn’t desecrate Bridge Over Troubled Water quite as badly as I’d feared, but I was very fearful, and it was pretty bad. I mean honestly, I can’t think of a good song for him either, but he’s all kindsa wrong for that one. Lindsey seemed pained through the whole thing, and I didn’t like the arrangement. Jesse has a beautiful voice, and leaves me completely unmoved, perhaps due to the inappropriate upbeatness of the arrangement, perhaps just because he’s so very unlikeable. Ashley’s performance of Right Through you was pure karaoke, and I loved it. Moses would do well on some other show.

In other news, Adam cut all his hair off, Cee Lo dyed Miss Purrfect black and made a wig of her, and Christina put her breasts away, took her extensions out, stopped with the orange foundation, and actually looked very pretty.

I heard “Livin’ on a Prayer” and though WTF? and was happy when Christina called Blake out on that.

My memory is crap, so I don’t remember who I loved and who I hated, but most of the singers were pretty bad in my opinion.

Looking at a recap list.

Chris Mann chose a song (or had a song chosen for him) that’s easy to do opera style. If he wants to become a pop singer he needs to stop doing that.

RaeLynn singing, “Wake up Call” and Lindsey Pavao sining, “Someone I use to Know” both made me cringe.

And Jesse Campbell, “What a Wonderful World” started weird for me but ended pretty strong.

 what’s wrong with Livin on a Prayer? It’s an old Bon Jovi song. Why would that bother Christina?

The singer’s style does not mesh well with that song. It’s a great song, and he’s a good singer, but some singers and songs should stay clear of each other.

West coast viewer. Charlotte Sometimes just sang. I don’t think it was that good of a job. And as for Naia, was her mic volume low or did she just sing too quietly?

I’ve been having a hard time hearing most of the women sing so far this season.

I just watched Monday’s show and read the results from Tues. I’m not wasting an extra night of my life for the results show. Screw that.

Lindsey Paveo - got enough votes to be safe? How in the heck did that happen? I just can’t stand her breathy, little girl voice. America blew this one.

Glad RaeLynn, Erin Willett, and Jermaine Paul got enough popular votes. I thought they did really well.

Christina did a great job finding a song that fit Chris Mann. There’s not that many pop songs that would fit his style.

America didn’t like Jordis Unga? That’s flipping crazy. She did great. I’m glad Blake saved her,

Sad to see Sera Hill gone. I just didn’t like the song Christina stuck her with.

Ashley De La Rosa - I didn’t particularly like her song. I’m surprised she didn’t get America’s vote. Christina was smart to save her.

Charlotte Sometimes - Is Dennys Hiring?, She asked. Well, honey you better find out tomorrow and get that application in, because Blake didn’t save you.

Just going by the results show performances, I thought that Sarah Hill should have been saved over Ashley. Oh well.

Next week hopefully we’ll get to see Erin Martin go home. I mean, I’m sure America will won’t vote for her, and hopefully Cee Lo will save someone else. Fingers crossed.

In other wtf with the song choices news, why so much repetition? On Monday, Sera did Find Your Love, which James did in the blind auditions. In the last chance round, Naia did If I Were a Boy, which Cheesa did in the blind auditions, and then Moses did Falling to Pieces which Xenia rather memorably did last year. I mean, I know they don’t have the rights to all the songs ever but they’d better start buying more, because I’m not interested in a musical version of “Who Wore It Better.”

Dear America… RaeLynn? Really? I was pleased to see Erin and Jermaine voted through, even if I feel that the only one who earned it on performance is Erin. I’m not terribly sorry to see Naia or Charlotte go, and Jordis impressed me for the first time since the auditions with Wild Horses.

Between saddling her with Find Your Love and blowing off her ballsy and well executed Vision of Love, I can’t help but wonder if Sera Hill has done something to anger Christina. I don’t mind though, since I find Ashley more entertaining and much easier to root for. Moses, I like you kid, but if you really want to be an MC go find a show where they let you do your original material. There’s no such thing as a cover-rapper.

On a completely shallow note, I totally want both Sera’s and Christina’s dresses from the elimination show, and I would like to offer my congratulations, admiration, and the thanks of a grateful nation to Christina’s new stylist, because she looks fantastic. Adam, not even you can make a buttoned up polo shirt okay, so cut that out.

I kept looking at Christina, wondering why she looked so different last night from previous shows - is it just different hair and make-up? She really was pretty last night (but of course she had the melons out again. We get it - you have ginormous boobs.)

Was Adam channelling Paula Abdul or something? He wasn’t making no damned sense.

Don’t know about Adam, I thought he made perfect sense, but what you probably noticed about Christina is that she’s lost weight.

Watched the performances last night, will have to catch up on the results later. So jumping over posts on results…

That’s what cheat sheets are for. I’ve been using the links above for nightly recaps.

I’m not completely mystified, but some of them certain are strange, and some are definitely not something I typically listen to.

Crossover styles can be interesting, and can make a hit. Garth Brooks had a hit with a Billy Joel song, Shameless. But tailoring the song to the singer is important. A soul singer doing a rock arrangement wasn’t the best choice. And Wakeup Call for anyone is a bit harsh, so yeah, not the best fit for a 17 year old.

Team Blake:
How can anyone stand Raelynn? Yet apparently some people like her. She’s the buzz of the Country Music Awards show, to hear Blake tell it.

Naia sounded the best she’s sounded, going away from reggae, and Blake had an excellent point that she needs to show broad ability. But she still has weird intonations and such. Same thing for Charlotte. She did a great job with the variation in energy and power, but her intonations make me choke. Erin Willett did very well, but I didn’t like her song, so I’m meh.

Team Xtina:
I thought Sera did a pretty good job, but I’m not big on the song choice, either. Chris Mann was probably the safe choice going with that style. That’s probably the easiest style to pull his opera training to use. Again, not my thing.

Lindsey had similar intonation issues, and that’s given that the song chosen for her is closest to her weird style to begin with. Plus, her volume didn’t fit in places. She didn’t have the power in places.

I have to agree with Adam, Jesse is the one to beat. The smug bastard (Jesse, not Adam).

Ashley de la Rosa was spot on with her rendition of Right Through You. That’s the best she’s been in the show, and it was very much like Alannis. I enjoyed it.

Moses I just don’t think belongs on this show. Honestly, rap and hip hop are not what I think of as vocal showcases anyway, and what little signing (as opposed to yelling and chanting) he did was dull and blah.

Snerk. My first thought: Christian, you put your tits away.

You think opera style isn’t going to work? That’s what I’m afraid of, too. It’s too different and isn’t going to find that creative “unique” niche and instead is just going to be “weird”.

My big complaint was some of the big arrangements, especially the rock ones, seem poorly balanced. The music and background vocals were overshadoing the competitors. And it’s not just the softer singers, it was Paul and Jordis getting squeezed out. You’re trying to showcase the competitor, make sure they’re mikes are on.

Jordis’s performance bugged me for a couple reasons. First off was the sound quality, it wasn’t just the quiet segments but also the power segments she was hard to hear. And she’s got power. But the big frustration was the editing of the song - I really love that song, so the editing distracted me and took me out of the performance, because I’m trying to mentally sing along and then it jumps in the lyrics. I had to go back a second time to listen again, and it was still hard to enjoy.

As for Jordis’s contribution, she wasn’t quite there with it. She had the emotion and the performance and hit the big notes, but my problem was in the pacing of the early soft part, she was just off from the music. That’s irritating.

Side note: I had a similar experience with the radio yesterday. Was listening to a recording of a live song, so it had that quality. It was a Clapton hit from the Cream days. The music was spot on as you would expect, but his signing was off. The first couple lines each stanza were rushed, not hitting the beats like you expect and hear on the studio version that’s all over the radio. It stood out and was annoying. Yes, it was Clapton playing. I was thinking, that’s just the kind of thing that sounds wrong on The Voice.

Hit the beats of the song. The lyrics are supposed to match the music, not just get the words out in something like the right order.

The only I notice about X-tina is the boobs and that she is appearently part carrot.

I agree with these two things, although I’m not as bothered by the smugness as other people seem to be. I saw a video of Jesse Campbell on Youtube where he had just lost the XFactor and was giving out tips to other people who were auditioning. He looked more like he was trying to pick himself up by doing it.

I just found The Voice in the last several weeks and have been catching up on Hulu (thanks for that tip earlier in the thread) and am really enjoying it. I really enjoyed the battle between Jesse Campbell and Anthony Evans in the battle rounds.

I don’t get the love for Rae-Lynn, either - her performance this week (I forgot what it was - she was twanging up some non-country song) was a hot mess.

It was a Maroon 5 song. I think she was just trying to impress Adam since she heard about this.

Finally got to see the results show last night. Like that they changed up this segment from last year. Last year, they did something where the judges gave some kind of numerical rating, then the audience voted and we got the results the next day. Well, the judges ended up mostly going with 50:50 splits on points, so they’re input was worthless, and also not very entertaining. This way, we get saves from the audience, then put the judges on the spot again. I also like they get another performance to be voted on.

Mildly annoyed they wasted time on that performance by the Black-Eyed Headaches, or whatever their name is. I would have fast forwarded, but was watching with someone else. Then we got truncated songs by the competitors, but I expected as much. They had to fit in 6 performances, plus the above thingy, plus the “dramatic” reveal of the audience picks, plus the judges doing their final picks - all in one hour.

I, too, was surprised by the audience save of Lindsey Pavao. And somebody actually likes RaeLynn? She’s from the Houston area (Baytown) and the local news likes to do segments on her, but her singing is atrocious to me. I guess it’s a perfect example of how different genres have different expectations.

Out of Jordis, Charlotte, and Naia, Jordis was the clear winner and blew the others away. That performance was exceptional, better than her Alone cover. I’m also pleasantly surprised that Blake agreed - I was expecting him to pull something out of his ass to save one of his quirky voiced chicks. Poor Naia, couldn’t pick a song she wanted - they had per picking from a small set list. And Charlotte actually didn’t sound too bad - she reduced some of the odd intonations and such. But she did miss some of the higher notes. Still, I could really feel the emotion.

Moses actually surprised me, he sang that song probably the best he’s done. Still wouldn’t pick him. Ashley sang her heart out, but I felt Sera had better vocal control. I am surprised Christina went with Ashley over Sera, but Ashley has certainly improved a lot.

Other than Raelynn, I’m pleased with the results.

Just a guess, but maybe it had something to do with needing to pick songs the band already had prepared? Because you’d hate to pull out some song the band has to sight read or something. My guess is these were late notice preparations, so they had a limited selection list, vs the blind auditions when the contestants are notified well in advance and have the opportunity to work with the band to prepare, or even the other selections where they have had weeks to prepare.

Yeppers.

What I noticed was more subdued make up and hair. The Monday show, she even had a fairly high neckline. Tuesday’s show was a little more revealing. Took me a moment to spot the layer inside the slit. I was thinking, that’s awfully close to the nipple zone.

Is Jesse the boring guy who sang What a Wonderful World. Yeah guy can sing, but what a bore. I thought Ashley’s version of the Alanis song was too Karaoke, why try to sound like Alanis so much. Hatedit. But then I thought her song to save her life was nails and fully deserved to go through. I like Sera but man wish she had picked a different song

Song choice did Sera in, for sure. That and the fact that her dancers were much more interesting than she was.

RaeLynn is the VFTW pick, so that might have something to do with it.

VFTW?

Vote For The Worst.
