The Walking Dead; 2.13 "Beside the Dying Fire" SEASON FINALE (open spoilers)

Wow, I loved it. I thought there was great tension pretty much the whole episode. Lots of shit coming to a head, and a great way to end the season. Sure, Lori is irritating, but there are irritating people everywhere.

Am I supposed to know there is a character named “Michonne”? How do I know him/her?

I learned that the cowled woman with the two armless zombie minions is called Michonne from “The Talking Dead.” I’m just extrapolating from what we saw on the show and what was on “The Talking Dead” later - I haven’t read the comics.

As near as I can tell, Andrea was on the run, constantly in motion for 24 hours. And at all times, only feet ahead of the closest zombies.

And considering they’d been driving for 10 hours or so away from the farm I can believe that nobody knew there was a big jail nearby (and even if they did, they might not think through what that means.

The real stupidity is not figuring out to get gas before running out.

Boy have they really nerfed the zombies. Last season he could barely get through a crowd of 20 of them and this time 9 of them get through a thousand, in the dark.

Were the zombies really so determined to follow a sound that they followed a helicopter even long after it was gone (even having abandoned available meat for it) or are we to suspect that the helicopter is specifically enticing them somewhere?

Rick isn’t very good at deciding which secrets to keep from the team. The important one (we’re all infected so be careful if that guy over there kills himself with a deep arm slice or my son gets shot) he keeps. The less important one (Shane tried to kill me and I killed him first and kind of wanted to do it) he blabs right away.

Really, one of the loudest vehicles you could possibly pick and also one that provides zero physical protection to boot?

Glad to finally see a character say “hey, maybe we should get to water.”

Though just had a thought (probably not original, but not seen by me) that with everybody infected this settles one of my issues with Sophia. Namely, how did she turn. It seems very unlikely that they’d get bitten but not pretty much eaten. If, instead, she just fell down a ravine and broke herself to death, then I’m ok with that.

Not to mention Shane was the worlds biggest asshole.

Keep in mind, Lori was sort of a psycho bitch before the whole zombie thing.

I think they just followed the sound for as long as it was in sight and then kept wandering in the same direction until they heard a new sound (the gunshot).

In fairness to Jesus, it’s still in Beta Testing.

Michonne has been cast; if you don’t want spoilers on who Michonne is then don’t click here.

Can we verify if “we all carry the zombie disease” was always the plan for the big secret or if they just had Jenner whisper something to be determined later when the writers decided that they needed to break it out? Was it in the comics? Was it in the Talking Dead (waaay earlier)? The points you made are good. Rick’s warped reasoning may have made sense in his head, but like you said I think he would have been smart enough to tell someone that, oh, BTW, if anyone dies during the night you gotta clock’em in the head right away or they’ll kill the rest of us, or at the very least anyone sick needs to be restrained.

Also, when Rick was defending himself to the group about killing Shane, I’m surprised that he never had Carl defend him. Carl saw enough that he could have verified that Rick was acting in self defense.

But as I always say, I really like this show so I have to remind myself not to poke holes in it. It’s to easy and the show seems to fall apart. We have to remember to treat it more like a sitcom then something like Breaking Bad.

ETA: One more thing. That cut on T-Dog’s arm. Did they ever do anything with that or was it just a waste of 3 episodes?

Yeah, I’m afraid it all gets pretty comic-book-y and juvenile after this.

I wish they would take the show in an independent direction.

I liked the idea that the helicopter was herding the walkers but overall I found it only a middling episode. To my mind they would have been better off have E12 as the season finale. It was a much stronger episode.

I sure hope not. From all the discussions here, it sounds like they haven’t been following the comics very faithfully so far, so fingers crossed that they don’t get too comic book-y and juvenile.

Yes, the “we all carry the zombie disease” comes directly from the comics and that was always the plan for Jenner’s secret.

In the comics, there is no Jenner but Rick does find out that everyone’s infected and everyone reanimates after death.

Major comic book spoiler from the Rick/Shane/Carl storyline that–as of last week–won’t spoil anything in the tv show:

Early in the comics, Carl kills the living Shane (by shooting him in the chest) for threatening Rick. They bury Shane and move on. Later, when Rick finds out how the infection works, he is haunted by the thought of undead-Shane. Eventually he goes back on his own to where they buried Shane, digs him up, and kills zombie-Shane.

Hmm, interesting (non)spoiler to see an example of how much the series differs from the comic.

a motorcycle, cars with windows down, low on fuel, an NOT A DAMN CB RADIO IN SIGHT!!!~!

otherwise not a terrible ep.

It was this episode that I decided I’m getting tired of the show. When the zombies were coming I thought, “If the group gets overrun and all killed; I wouldn’t mind. In fact, I could respect that because it would be realistic.”

I’m losing respect for most of the characters. Like someone said earlier, Rick is becoming Shane. Lori, Andrea, and Carol have become backstabbing and manipulative, and T-Dog decides to abandon the group and is surprised when Lori gets upset about being separated from her husband and son. Speaking of which, someone needs to smack Carl around and tell him to quit wondering off.

And the stupid. When whats-his-name drove the van to the barn I couldn’t believe it. Yeah, let’s drive into the middle of the zombie herd. And when he stopped the van, I knew for sure it was all over.

How much further can they go with this premise? They wander around, act stupid, meet some new survivors, fight some zombies. I can’t see it lasting past season 3. Or, should I say, I can’t see me watching it past season 3.

If it is anything like the comic(which the last episode suggests yes it is) so far you will give up. It goes on and on and on, they move to a new fortified location and it gets over run with zombies rinse repeat. Thats it in broad strokes.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of repetitive plots. And like I said I no longer like most of the main characters. I will give season three a chance to win me back though.

Prepare to get yelled at.

I mean, I’ve never been a fan of the whole zombie genre in general, (I think 28 Days Later was the only one that I can honestly say I enjoyed) and I pretty much expected the sort of story arc you describe, since they all seem to go that way. But I still kind of wish I hadn’t read your post, and I imagine others might be more upset than I am.

When in doubt, it’s best to use spoiler tags for anything and everything that comes from “outside” knowledge.

The one possible bright side is that since comics tend to be more open ended, the series is much more likely to work it’s way towards some sort of resolution. I could be completely wrong about that, though.

Honestly I didn’t think a broad outline was a spoiler, anymore than saying throughout its run BSG is about humans running from Cylons in ships without giving further details. I guess I wanted to say if you don’t like what they have shown so far, you’re not gonna like the rest.

That’s basically the premise of every zombie story ever.

You’re either on the road scavaging for enough food, supplies and ammo to stay mobile enough to not get caught in the open or cornered by zombies, bandit gangs, renegade National Guard or crazies.

Or you hole up in some fortified sanctuary with what turns out to be the biggest bunch of assholes, lunatics, and idiots in the world. It becomes an inescapable death trap as a endless sea of zombies form around it. Eventually, supplies run out, some jerk breaks the perimeter or it turns out the other survivors are just as bad as the zombies, the whole thing turns into a shitshow and it’s back on the road.
