The Walking Dead; 3.05 "Say the Word" (open spoilers)

Rick needs some new clothes.

The Lori questions were answered by director on Talking Dead. Bloated Zombie had indeed eaten Lori, hence Rick’s stabbing it after shooting it. He picked up the bullet off the floor so we indeed know that Carl shot her.

Didn’t notice what Michonne saw in the corner at Gov’s house. Also all those tick marks in journal, were those supposed to be people who have died? Very confused about that.

Graves are a big question mark. Who exactly did they bury? They had no bodies. The one Daryl visited was definitely supposed to be Carol’s even though no body has been recovered.

Too many questions for me in this episode for me to be satisfied. Last week’s was much better.

They didn’t show Carl shooting Lori, so it kind of makes sense that they won’t show Carol, Lori, and T-Dog being gathered up and buried.

What did Rick find and pick up? Jewelry?

At first I thought he stabbed at the bloated walker belly because it looked pregnant, and it was the pregnancy that resulted in Lori’s death. Sort of a symbolic gesture. Guess not.

Did anyone else want to see at least one infant/toddler walker in that day care center? Daryl could have made a comment about ankle biters. Too insensitive? Okay then.

I assumed that those were the Governor’s version of, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” from The Shining - he lost it when Penny (who I assume is his daughter) was killed.

Yeah, the not stocking up is a blooper basically, and I bet they are getting ragged for that. Can a newborn survive without formula or breast milk? Or do they have to find a late term walker and…Og…don’t wanna go there.

Why would bloated zombie eat lori if

a) carl shot her in the head (zombies dont eat zombies)

b) if carl did not shoot Lori - that makes sense - but then what does the bullet mean?

They’ll eat the dead if it’s a fresh kill. We’ve seen them tear into the living and keep eating after the victim was obviously dead.

If Carl shot her in the head, she wouldn’t be a zombie. Zombies DO eat dead people, since most people die during the eatin’ and they keep going until something else distracts them.

Maybe Lori the zombie gets to feed her baby…

I’ll give you that IF the victim is killed during the eating - but then again, I just remembered them being lured into the prison by the fresh deer kill, so I’ll just slink back off to my corner.

Not for long. You can give them water to fill their bellies and quiet them down, but it’s got no nutritional value and a newborn won’t last more than a couple of days without nutrients.

sidenote about tonight’s Talking Dead: Holy cow, that prosthetic bust of T-Dog they showed was quite realistic. Very cool.

I concur, Tangent. That prosthetic was totally awesome!! Nice shout out they gave T Dog from Glenn. Found out more about him after his death than we found out during all his appearances.

Going on formula runs will give the writers various locales to create surprises and introduce new characters instead of being stuck in the confining prison all the time.

So, did anyone notice what those “black bags?” were in the corner at Governor’s house?

Surprised no one has mentioned Zombie Fight Club. Think they had some side action going on? What types of things could you bet? Booze? Koolaid? Barbeque possum?

No, that was Carol’s. Darryl and Carol had this connection over a flower a few seasons ago. It was a cherokee rose
Also, if you looked close, the rocks that he set it into were in the shape of a C. I’m sure they’ll make it more clear next week. The flower was a bit of an Easter Egg for the people that remember that conversation. As soon as I saw Darryl holding it, I knew it was Carol in the grave.

I loved seeing the phone scene at the end–it’s an iconic moment in the comic. (I’m assuming the person Rick talks to will be the same as in the comic.)

Me too! I had previously asked in spoilers about the Governor’s daughter, not being sure if they’d really include that part of the story. I really did not think they’d include the phone call.

That just goes to show what I know about writing for a hit zombie series!

As long as it’s sealed up tight, it probably retains most of its nutritional value even if it’s past its use-by date. … Was there a whole lot of baby formula in that house? Or did Maggie/Darryl take all they found? If there was a lot more, they could go back with a bigger vehicle and take it all. The trip on the motorcycle was just a scouting expedition then.

Okay, here are my thoughts on the episode.

Overall I liked it but I thought it was a bit disjointed and some things that could have been clear were not very clear in the way it was done. Obvious example being Carol’s fate and what happened to Lori. I agree with other posters here on that being Carol’s grave that Darryl visited. The flower and the rocks in the form of a “C” confirmed it but up until that point it was not clear at all if she was alive or dead. It seems sad to me that the character got such a poor treatment by the show but in an episode last week that included T-Dog and Lori dying and this week the fall-out with Rick of Lori I can see how it got lost and not a lot of attention spent on it. My only hope here is they’re doing this on purpose. I don’t like doing crazy speculation but maybe since they have not shown Carol’s body nor given us any scene to indicate what happened that they’re using this as some misdirection and she is really alive. Darryl found her scarf by T-dog’s body. Maybe near by the found a severely eaten body and assumed it was Carol. They buried the remains, believing it to be Carol and getting us viewers to accept it as just one of the losses the group sustained. All for a bigger reveal later that she is not dead.

Spoiler speculation based upon the comic book:

Didn’t some of the seemingly cooperative convicts in the comic actual get all rapey with one of the women? Could they try to tie this theme into the story? Carol isn’t dead but being held by the convicts secretly for sex?

As for Lori, it took me awhile to piece together that scene. All the blood. The bullet on the ground. Her body missing. My fiancé and I both thought that meant she was now a walker. Then the bloated walker sitting there with all the blood on it’s mouth and hands…

Carl is definitely growing up fast. His list of possible names for the baby consisting of the names of the women in the group who had already died really brought back how many people they’ve lost. That was a good scene, hit me in the gut a little bit. As did the scene with Glenn and the convicts then Hershel. Some real grief and anger there.

I also really bought into Rick completely snapping. This guy has gone through hell (as they all have) and Rick has done so much to protect Lori and Carl. Over and over he has used them to give him strength to endure all of the losses, the nightmares around them, the insanity, the unrelenting drive to stay alive and survive one more day, all of it, that it was all to protect them. All the stress of being responsible for all of their lives for so long, continuing to show strong leadership through everything. Yea, I can see how that tight wire would completely snap over Lori’s death.

Wait, so that bloated walker was supposed to have eaten the entirety of Lori in the hour since her death? I guess zombies are bigger on the inside.

I thought Rick was digging around for her wedding band, but I’ve not read that anywhere else.
