The Walking Dead; 5.01 "No Santuary" (open spoilers)

Oh, I’ve noticed this from the beginning but never thought to comment on it. I thought, it’s hot humid sticky Georgia and all those long skirts? You’d think zombies in tank tops and shorts would be more prevalent, but maybe it saves on makeup.

I got a bit teary at the end with the two reunions. (Everyone is hoping Darryl and Carol hook up, but I have a feeling she’s more of a mother figure to him. I’ll be interested in if he ever does get a partner on this show.)

I agree! Excellent episode – highly action-packed and entertaining!

I thought it was fantastic. Suspenseful and well written. The reunions at the end had me choked up for sure.

Yes, it appears (according to the flashbacks and Mary’s speech to Carol) that Terminus was once a true sanctuary, overrun by bad people who did bad things. Maybe we’ll get more backstory on how they took it back, and why/how they became cannibals. It seems pretty obvious by the body on the table being sawed up, and the skinned torsos hanging in the next room. As for keeping the meat fresh - a place the size of Terminus had generators around for sure (assumption) so they can use those to run freezers with very little gasoline.

I’ve seen a couple of the “season” preview videos, and Head Terminus Guy (Gareth?) is with our group in the church. So I’m 100% certain we will see him again.

Can’t wait to see what happens when Morgan catches up with our heroes.

That’s the only part of the show that bothered me. No way that sort of execution would work in real life. Once that first guy got conked and throat slit - no way any human would just kneel there and wait.

I know I wouldn’t. I would kick, scream, and flail until they forced me to stop. Sure, I’d probably end up dead anyway, but I wouldn’t make it easy and neat for them. I’d at least make sure they had a mess to mop up when they were done.

And Glenn just kneels there waiting? That’s his plan - to go out without a fight? I guess he knew Carol would blow up the LP tank just in the nick of time. Well, just in the nick of time after Gareth interrupted the executioners a few times.
I still voted that I loved the EP. I feared they’d spend the majority of the premiere talking in the freight car.

It’s nice that they more or less wrapped up the Terminus storyline right out of the gate this season. 5 episodes of “Wow, it really sucks to be captured by people-eaters” would have been tedious.

However, they conspicuously did not kill off the boss, so he’ll be back, inevitably. No doubt armed with Michonne’s sword, to be killed by Rick, using the machete with the red handle, but only after someone Rick cares about gets killed, thus proving that Rick had the right idea about mopping up at Terminus.
I’m still on the fence about the scientist guy’s bona fides. His explanation was so unconvincing that it bolsters the idea that he doesn’t know jack, and he (or he and his friends) are using his supposed importance to help them get in good with with strangers (not that it worked at Terminus). At the end of the episode, army girl asked army guy when he was going to tell Rick’s people something apparently important, maybe that something is that they are full of shit.

On the other hand, the science guy is a typical TV scientist caricature: socially and physically inept, and just kind of weird. Because smart people all fall on a spectrum that runs from abnormal to barely-human, with significant propensity towards crazy and/or evil. The TV gobbledygook science explanation may just be a result of the writers’ mindset.

Two timepieces figured in this episode:

  1. The wristwatch that Carol picked up from the spoils room. Was that the one Herschel gave to Glen? The one Carol gave to Rick? Maybe I’m remembering those wrong.
  2. The pocket watch that Sasha was using the chain of to saw off pieces of wood in the boxcar. It also is shown in the opening credits.

I was expecting Rick to go for the baseball bat guy, however awkwardly, just before he swung at Glenn.

The watch that Carol found was the watch that Rick gave to Sam last season - when Rick and Carol went on a run and found that couple. The woman was killed by walkers, the man, Sam, was the first one in line during the opening slaughter house scene.

Another note: the recap from AMC’s website says the following -

“Months after Rick’s escape from Terminus, a masked stranger marches down the railroad tracks. He stops to see the Terminus sign Rick modified, and hangs his head. He removes his mask. It’s Morgan.”

So Morgan is months behind???

I just don’t remember “morgan”

Aha, thanks! I knew there was some kind of watch exchange in that episode, but couldn’t recall the particulars.

Months? Obviously. Er, um, yes, obviously.

His son clonked Rick on the head in the first episode.

What is the word about the spin off series?

I had to look him up. IIRC, he’s the guy that went all nuts on his own with all the weapons. He was barricaded in in that village all by himself. Rick found him here.

That bugged me. From out POV, Rick was on the left and the two guys were way over on the right, there’s no way he could even get at the guy’s calf and I don’t believe a piece of blunt wood is cutting through a heavy zip tie.

I agree with that. If you know you’re going to die, you might as well fight to the end. Those guys, and especially Glenn had given up.

When bugged me more than anything as unbelievable is that Carol spent all that time lining up her shot, with a scope, and taking two or three shots to hit the giant LP tank but managed to hit the plume of propane, not just with one randomly aimed bottle rocket, but she set it up beforehand, she didn’t even know where the puncture was going to be. She at least could have adjusted the bottle rocket a little afterwards to make it look somewhat realistic, or give her a roman candle that she could aim.

Then his son got turned (his wife had already been), and Morgan went nuts and built a compound out of a small town.
I remembered the character, but didn’t recognize him at first because I wasn’t expecting him and it’s been a while. Apparently he’s processed his grief. (Perhaps the gas mask helped.)

ahh - that Morgan!

He had sharpened the wood with the pocket watch chain! it did actually have a bit of an edge to it.

I took the first two shots as glancers - the third shot penetrated the tank - at that point, you only need the fireworks to get “close”.

I actually thought that was the smartest thing anyone has done on this show - and I loved the visual of the zombies.

In the spinoff, I’d actually like for them to

1- Totally leave the comic books behind
2- Concentrate more on the rebuilding of society

Killing zombies left right and center and “We’ve found a sanctuary! Oh wait, no we haven’t… We’ve found a sanctuary! Oh wait, no we haven’t… wait, is this a sanctu…nope” is getting a bit short-term/long term formulaic. Stationary would be cool.

The rumor is that the spinoff is to be filmed in some of the abandoned areas of Detroit. No idea if there’s any truth to that.

Only news on the spin off I have seen is that it is set in the early days of the Zombie plague which, if they have to do a non anthology show, is probably the best setting for a spin off. Makes it feel different.

Agreed. That was a nice surprise, as I was expecting Terminus to be the next farm/prison.

She didn’t ask, she just looked at him expectantly, to which he offered “We’ll talk to him. Just not right now.” He was almost certainly referring to going to Washington. As in, yes, we’ll convince him to help us get to Washington, but right at this particular moment he’s just been reunited with his baby daughter so maybe let’s bring it up later.

That’s what Conan/Chris said. It was a lot of workup to not end up being the backdrop for the season.

That must have made for an expensive set considering Terminus was probably only aired for 45 minutes between this season and last season.

Doh! Forgot that these guys hadn’t gotten any time to talk about stuff beyond “Pleased to meet you, we are so freaking boned right now.”

Well, the recap could be wrong, but the show jumps backwards and forwards in time when need be. The group needs to find Beth from the church, which they’ll apparently do next week, and Morgan will probably just be shown every once in awhile getting closer. I thought we established last season that it’s fall in Georgia, and the nights get nippy which explains people wearing warmer clothes when it’s sunny out. Anyway, after they find Beth I wouldn’t be surprised if they fast forward through winter, and that’s when Morgan will catch up.

Curious about the symbol on the tree though. Is that a symbol both Rick & Morgan understand from their old cop days or something? Wasn’t Morgan also a cop? Is the symbol specifically for Morgan?

Bummer about Michonne’s Katana. I thought Carol would pick it up along with the crossbow. Maybe that Terminus bad guy will bring it with him when he goes after the group. Looks like Michonne has already fashioned herself a double edged staff weapon of some kind.

Morgan was not a cop. His former occupation was not revealed, that I can recall, but in his interactions with Rick in the very first episode, it was obvious Rick was the cop, and Morgan was not.
