Okay, finally got an hour to watch my Tivo’d episode. Four things:
[ol]
[li]Holy crap, it’s hard to avoid spoilers for 3 nights.[/li][li]Diesel does have an advantage over gasoline. Better shelf life than gasoline.[/li][li]There is ALWAYS traffic in Atlanta.[/li][li]Agree that Eugene is acting like an abused spouse. Almost like they are trying to build up some suspense for how long before he finally mans up.[/li][/ol]
But her sister Maggie is with the main group, and that MIGHT help counter any Stockholm syndrome or other brainwashing.
Which could be why the writers sent Maggie off to DC on the bus.
Given how clean the hospital looks, I’m wondering if this isn’t a flashback from much earlier - like before Rick woke up in season one. Any chance she was in the hospital for some other injury at the same time as Rick?
No, she was at the farm with her dad. You can see the devastation outside, and Hershel would not have had her in a hospital at that point.
Even with all the storylines and plots, one thing weighin on my mind, feeling sorry for the cast if they filmed in the past summer in this heat only to have to wear long sleeves and jackets if the series is still taking place in Jan. (How do I know, in “A” the season 4 finale, Joe mentioned it being New Year’s Eve and I think a couple weeks have passed by in TWD time) I know it was farfetched to show Georgia winter as they never show winters in TWD, but yikes the weather has been skewered!
During the Talking Dead show it was mentioned that the crew used bags of ice to cool down the ground/parking lot when the actors, Beth and the brain dead walkers, had to lay down. They said it was one of the hottest days of the year.
I’m bumping this particular thread to ask a question. As far as spoilers go, I’m past the mid-season mark, but I have NOT finished season 5 yet.
So I’m trying to determine why the showrunner and writers did what they did with Gareth and Terminus this season. Last season the entire plot and buildup was on everyone travelling to Terminus. And they got there, got captured, and there’s a cliffhanger.
What’s going to happen to them? What really is Terminus? Where do they go from here?
But within 20 minutes of the season opener, Terminus is blown to bits, 3/4 of the people in it are dead, and Rick’s entire crew escapes. They could have milked the community they built up for half the season. But the writers make a choice to cut Terminus loose in Episode 1. Why?
And then Gareth is the big bad of the season…nope, he gets killed in episode 3. Again, that’s fine. But here’s what I can’t wrap my head around. In episode 1 there’s a purposeful flashback to Gareth, his mom, and his brother in the traincar ready to take back Terminus. They flesh out the mom’s character, even though she dies in episode 1. And Gareth then dies in episode 3. So why waste precious time with the flashback? What functional purpose did it serve?
The only thing I can think is that the writers had an idea of where they were going in episode 1 and by episode 2, the showrunner said “yeah, this isn’t working. Change of plans,” and we now have the death of everyone else at Terminus and we move the plot along.
Does any know for sure? Thanks
I would say there is no big bad for that Season. I he antagonist Team Grimes was facing was their own gradual corruption. There are episodes coming up in which Rick’s behave will be similar to Gareth’s, for instance.
And in the interests of not spoiling the season, I will not mention the Michonne/Sasha/Carol three-day from the season finale, nor the Daryl/Rick duel to the death.
Fair enough. And after posting I realized there was another option besides a change of direction: the writers were fucking with us. You set someone up as the antagonist, have them survive a duel against all odds, and give that person a backstory that serves no purpose unless it’s to come into play later on…no way we’d expect that person to bite it in episode 3 of a 16 episode season.
Which sounds hot and all, but seriously the only thing I can think when I watch these characters is just how god awful each and every one of them must smell. Hey guys?99% of humans across history had no access to modern plumbing and they managed to take a bath more than you. And at least you guys can break into a goddamned clothing store and get a change of outfits.
The backstory they gave was to explain why Terminus was the way it was by the time Rick’s crew showed up.
Yeah, but we didn’t really need a backstory for that. It’s a zombie apocalypse. People are shitty. Groups of shitty people are even shittier. And people will do what they can to survive. We’ve seen that again and again and again and Terminus is no different*
No, the backstory wasn’t for Terminus. It was for Gareth. Or was supposed to be anyway.
*Though an argument can be made that the whole cannibalism thing was just to up the stakes for Rick & crew and made no sense in-universe. Plants still grow. Animals are not affected. So there’s no lack of food sources for a group of resourceful people.
