The Walking Dead; 5.05 "Self Help" (open spoilers)

I agree.

I am curious. Who enforces rules in a thread?

The Shape Of Things To Come by H.G. Wells.

Sorry the show and the comic isn’t popular enough to support two threads–please don’t make those of us that don’t want to be casually spoiled suffer for it.

The problem always seemed to stem from people who play the “What, I just made a vague statement that alluded to the outcome in the comic, how was I supposed to know the show would go the same route” which is still a dick move IMO.

An example of the kind of stuff that seemed to happen: New Character X gets introduced in the comic. In the comic, said character goes into a beauty salon to look for shampoo and gets his head chopped off by an axe-wielding maniac. Character X is introduced on the show. Someone in the discussion thread says, “Yeah this character is in the comic, but I don’t know how long he’ll be around.” Someone else says “Well, he’ll be around for awhile unless he goes into a salon. ;)” Three episodes later, Character X says “I need shampoo. I’m going to check out that salon.”

Ninjas, it’s always ninjas.

CMC fnord!

I thought I saw “H. G. Wells” on the cover-- but couldn’t read the title.

Personally, I find the “that which must not be named” attitude to be silly. Part of the interest of following a show is examining the choices that the showrunners make, and part of that examination is analyzing what they do with the source material. (I suspect that many or most of those who take the TWMNBN stance, can also be seen around this and other forums doing as much mini-modding as they can get away with (without being scolded by the actual mods). It’s a personality trait more than an aesthetic philosophy.)

The TV show edited out, or ignored, the reason why Abe killed his neighbors and friends. Not cool. It was explained on the Talking Dead that Abe’s wife and kids had never seen daddy “at work” before and freaked out? Whatever. That led to the wife talking off with the kids and being devoured, which led to Abe being so despondent that he intended to kill himself. A very, very, low point in anyone’s life. Abe automatically responded to Eugene’s cry for help, fixed the problem, and went back to what he was doing, or intended to do.

Abe, his suicidal daze behind him, now has trusted friends and a girl friend. He needs a new mission. They all do.

Eugene quickly realized that he had a potential bodyguard if he could convince Abe to take on one more mission. Abe’s belief in Eugene was also essential to convince others to believe Eugene.

The realization that Eugene may be a low-down, scum-sucking, lying weasel but he’s “our” low-down, scum-sucking, lying weasel will probably keep Eugene alive and with the group. But what will the new mission be? It makes sense that Abe’s group will now rejoin Rick’s group (but it might be considered Glenn’s group until Abe comes to grips with being played a fool). Will it be in time to join the effort to rescue Beth and Carol? Will Eugene pull a Carol and end up rescuing the group from walkers, claimers, or Dawn’s patrol?

Please, let’s stick with the “Don’t Spoil” rule. Let’s keep all comics out of the TV show discussion. Even off-handed or peripheral comments can ruin the tension and enjoyment of the show.

Are you trying to tell us that something happens to Daryl?

Eugene was reading “The Shape of Things to Come” by H.G. Wells.

I’m in favor of keeping Mullet around if he’s smarter than everyone else, but I don’t have a lot of faith that we’ll see much intelligence. Squirting the zombies did seem like the smart thing, sort of. But also unbelievable.

Daryl does not need shampoo. Never has, never will. If he felt the need for cleaner hair, he would simply will it, the way Fonzie would.

Except that there weren’t any spoilers in this thread.

I once asked a question about the comics. Should I have an irresistible surge to know something, (and I promise that I shall try to contain myself) I shall ask that the reply be in a spoiler box.

And?

That is irrelevant. If the established Walking Dead tv show thread social agreement is “the comics don’t exist”–why are people talking about the comics? The comics have specifically been brought up multiple times in this thread. So what that no one has done an outright spoiler or the “I’m making a clever in-joke” statement. Why is the door being opened at all?

Just start a new thread. Then we won’t have this discussion again…which we will if you do that.

Maybe this deserves its own thread, but: I find this to be an absurd attitude. The mere typing of the words “the comics exist” should not elicit “get a rope!”

It demonstrated his out-of-the-box thinking that may later prove useful to the writers. Not everyone can get water out of a pumper truck that isn’t running.

And… Since there were no spoilers from the comics, your complaint is irrelevant.

As you say, no one has made an outright spoiler or even a ‘clever in-joke’. References to the comics are to point out differences between them and what has already been shown on the show, and to explain things that have already been shown on the show that the show did a poor job of portraying. (Hence, explanations on The Talking Dead… which comes on after the show.

There is no reason to disallow references to the comics after the show has aired. And even if there was, it wouldn’t stop me from posting ‘Hey, you’re all wrong! Eugene does have the cure! He just doesn’t know it. And Tara lets him boff her.’

(And no, that’s not actually a spoiler. I just made it up. I haven’t read the comics yet.)

Unfortunately not everyone has as much self control as you give them credit for. Plot points have been ruined in the past. IIRC, Michonne showed up at the very end of an episode (maybe even the season finale) and someone jumped in to say 'she’s in the comics, she’s a good guy.
gee. thanks.

Perhaps, but people who blurt out stuff like that aren’t going to be deterred by silly thread rules.
