The Walking Dead; 5.15 "Try" (open spoilers)

I was disappointed that a drunk, doughy surgeon could kick Rick’s ass. I know that Andrew Lincoln is pretty scrawny, but I was going along with the fiction that he is a rough customer in the show’s universe. But sheesh.

The segment with Deanna rewatching her interview with Nicholas, in conjunction with her backstory as a putatively competitive high level poker player, says that she knows Nicholas’ story was bullshit.

Their predicament - how to maintain both order and some true basics of civility (e.g., no summary executions) is interesting, and was handled reasonably well by the writers.

The ultimate come-uppance would be for Rick & his group to be exiled just prior to the unseen “W gang” arriving at Alexandria. Everyone that stays get slaughtered for not heeding Rick’s advice. Our heroes live to fight another day, albeit once again homeless.

I’d wager that at some point we get a shot of someone recognizable - Deanna or Jessie - zombified and with a W carved on their forehead. Okay, I wouldn’t wager a ton on that, but it seems like a direction that they might take all of this.

I still think that’s Morgan in the woods, spotted by Daryl.

Oh, it is headed another way. Rick’s group is going to be the “not so bad guys” as soon as the W fellows show up. Basically everything Rick says is gonna be proven right.

Carol still tells the bestest bedtime stories ever.

I hope Enid and Carl have protection with them. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more.

Rich seems to have a bit of a Cassandra Complex. Rick’s group has personally experienced the dangers of what life is like outside of the naive utopia of Alexandria. While it’s frustrating trying to convince the Congresswoman, and the Alexandrians, that they need a much, much better defensive plan than they one they currently have, pointing a gun at Deanna is NOT the way to do that.

(Cassandra Complex -
The term originates in Greek mythology. Cassandra was a daughter of Priam, the King of Troy. Struck by her beauty, Apollo provided her with the gift of prophecy, but when Cassandra refused Apollo’s romantic advances, he placed a curse ensuring that nobody would believe her warnings. Cassandra was left with the knowledge of future events, but could neither alter these events nor convince others of the validity of her predictions.)

Next weeks preview hints at a group discussion to decide Rick’s fate. Maybe they’ll decide Drunk Doc’s fate also, but I doubt they’ll vote a surgeon off the island. Alexandrian leadership had already accepted the fact that their doctor was a wife-beater. Maybe recruter Aaron will return in the nick of time to share his stories of (living) wanderers being tortured, butchered, and tied alive, to trees in the area surrounding Alexandrian? And the group may discuss the increasing appearence of carved "W"s??? That could/maybe/might convince the residents that they also need a Rick-type as much as they need a surgeon.

The viewers, Glenn, and Eugene know that Nicolas lied about the events of the last scavenger run. Everyone else has to chose which side to believe. I assume Deanna would have debriefed three of the four survivers. I’m under the impression that Deanna didn’t fully trust Nicolas (or Aiden) before Rick’s group appeared (repeatedly thanking Glenn for punching her son is an extreme version of tough-love) and Glenn and Eugene’s story should have matched. Glenn and Eugene did return with Nicolas and Tara, which is a plus.

And then all season-ending-heck will break loose and none of the personal problems will matter. Except for Nicolas trying to shoot Glenn in the back, of course, and Gabriel tries to lock all of Alexandria out of Alexandria.

My did Carl’s friend throw the timer in the direction of the walker? It wasn’t like they were in danger. They could have easily just walked away. I don’t understand why the distraction was needed.

I remember back at Noahs town, there was a stone wall that looked like a tank had driven through it, or something blasted through it, but I don’t remember burn marks. Anyway, it seemed out of place and if the “wolves” did it, they can probably get through Alexandria’s walls. I could see things between Rick’s group & the Alexandrians getting really strained until the wolves show up and remind the Alexandrians how rough the world is.

Where’s Morgan. Are we going to get another shot of him, somewhere, following the trail, at the end of the episode?

Funny how they’re all about transparency and videoing everything except doctor drunk’s little problem is a secret. Let the whole town know he can’t have any booze and he needs to live in a different house, under house arrest if need be. Heck, if they just cut him off from the booze it’d probably make the problem go away.

Yeah, the alarm clock was dumb. At least go back and get it.

The writers took the time to demonstrate how clever Enid can be. She can always retrieve the timer after the walker(s) have left the area.

He’s 600 miles south of Alexandria, near Atlanta.

That was a long time ago and traveling alone Morgan could probably cover a lot of distance. Unless what we see of Morgan is some unknown time period, he should be nearer. I’m not as concerned where he physically is, as much as when he’s going to show up, and why. Doesn’t look like we’ll find out this season.

See The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.

Hard to believe that Carl, worldly wise as he is, would hide in a tree from Walkers. If they storm the tree, there is no exit. Very, very stupid and totally not believable.

Oh wait, RAGING TEENAGE HORMONES!!!

Serious question: Assuming at least one of the actors is underage, would it be illegal to have Carl and Enid kiss on screen? And I mean kiss-kiss, not peck on the cheek kiss.

Let us not forget that you can follow a car of even trained policemen about if you leave your lights off.
:dubious:

Do they even make timers that incessantly ring like that? Every kitchen timer I’ve seen like that dings once and then it’s done.

I have several kitchen timers like that (we cook holiday dinners and have a lot of things going at once) and they all ring until stopped (or a few seconds go by) you turn the dial more than halfway (you can then dial them back down to your desired time) If you just turn the dial only to a shorter time like 5 to 10 minutes it will ding once and be done. So she turns it half way and then dials it back down to 1 minute, it would still ring for an extended amount of time.

That scene was stupid because it was completely unnecessary for her to use that trick at that moment. It would have been better to have saved it until they were in the tree. They could have spotted walkers getting closer-- she throws the kitchen timer to bunch up the ghosts and give them room to run away.

Also, since the show references other zombie fiction from time to time–I think the timer trick was an homage to State of Decay.

I think Rick will ultimately be saved because the Wolves will attack right before they decide what to do with him. Someone will set him loose (my bet is Deanna) in time to coordinate the defense. Rick will also be faced with a dilemma of saving or letting the abusive doc get killed.

There is only one episode left - I don’t expect any attack by an outside group this season. Season probably ends with Rick being cast out.

I too was disappointed by how the fight with drunk doc played out. Rick should have easily been able to dispatch him. I expected him to kill him inside the house without nary a word.

The gunplay in previous seasons was incredibly poor. So far this season it’s been better, but maybe because it’s just been less. My first though this episode when I saw Sasha going rambo was that ammo seems to not be scarce any longer.

So what is Nicholas going to do with Chekhov’s gun?

It might be more interesting if they don’t. Carl knocks up Enid, but Rick winds up exiled. Carl would be in a real jam with torn loyalties.
