U-NO! U-NO! U-NO!!
What a cutie! I must say that I found the Akita and big poodle more impressive, but did you SEE that liddle beagle face?!

Way to go Uno!
That was not a big poodle. Bout middling size.
Oh, I know–one of my professors had a poodle that could rear up and put his paws on his shoulders. I just meant compared to the other poodle in the ring.
Uno has his own thread! Yay!
My standard poodle can put her paws on my shoulders, with room to spare. But I’m a short little person, only 5’ 2". My bigger dobe has made muddy paw prints above my head on my door when he wants to come in. He’s a big boy.

I was really disappointed that those 2 silly looking poodles made it to the best of show. Just goes to show how little I know about dog showing.
Now let’s be honest - was anyone else - um - distracted by the vigorous manner in which BIG Uno’s thang was waggling back and forth as he pranced? OUCH!
Come on, tell me my daughter and I weren’t the only pervs watching!
I’d say the old lady who judged the one category (working dogs?) is choosing to hang up her spurs none too soon.
My choices would have been the Weirmeraner, Aussie, and Akita - probably in that order, tho the Beagle was really cute.
It is amazing to think of what must be going through those judges’ heads. It seems as tho it must be so subjective. After all, each of the best of breeds has to be pretty darned close to the perfect example of their breed. Then the group winners are the best of the best. I wonder how much of a crapshoot it is who wins among them.
I’d’ve chosen the Weimeraner, Akita and Standard Poodle, in that order. And I’d’ve snuck in the Dobie from the Working group. (I have breed loyalty to a fault)

That beagle was too cute, I knew he was best in show directly.
I could have gone with the Akita though, such beautiful markings, like a watercolour painting.
I have a soft spot for Tibetan Mastiffs and so was delighted to see them in the show for the first time and one even made it to the best in show round! Very exciting to see.
I did like that Beagle, although I missed what sounds like a bravura performance on Monday.
I enjoy watching the dog shows, but they almost always turn into a frustrating experience for me because the wrong dogs win. Supposedly it’s because they are easier to ‘perfect’ genetically, but they favor the small dogs very strongly and I really don’t like small dogs at all. I root first and foremost for the Gordon Setters in honor of my childhood dog, Lucy, and second for the English Springers - my family has a psychotic Springer now, and she’s a distant relative of the dog that won the whole thing a year or two ago. I was okay with the Weimaraner that won, but when the judge picked the three Cocker Spaniels I prepared to curse his family for untold generations.
You can fix that problem, Marley, by just voting for the beagle. You can’t go wrong and they’re black belts in everything cute.
The one small thing that bothers me about Uno is an excerpt from this news article:
I get a little sad every time I see a breed starting to divide more and more clearly into working and show lines (like German Shepherds). I think that champions in their breeds should be able to do what they were originally bred to do in addition to meeting the breed standard.
A nice thing about living with a mixed breed, a.k.a. mutt, is that we get to root for several pooches. She’s German shepherd/black lab and was particularly attentive when they showed. She, and I, thought beautiful Geneva the GSD was shamelessly robbed. We both really liked the Plott, though, for being beautiful and stuck with an unfortunate name.
However, she was thrilled with me when Uno the Beagle won. That was in fond memory of my first dog, Hector, a beagle/basset mix. (RIP, silky ears.) We were both very glad a dog won who wasn’t humiliated by a cheesy show clip or–worst–cropped of tail or ears.
We both did the Snoopy Happy Dance, then she got a liver treat just for being so exceptional her own self.
I think I’m willing to allow the Beagle into my “real dog” class. They’re on the small end, but they do have all the dog characteristics, and Uno was very charming.
Spend time with one. Head to the shelter and find a beagle or go to PetSmart and get locked in a room with a beagle for a little while. You’ll be a convert.
Glad to see a hound dog has won westminister and not those fluffy toy dogs. They seem to win every year
Why is it that it’s usually the most common, popular breeds that win – and come in second, third and fourth as well - at Westminster? I’ve got two Portuguese Water Dogs, and the breed has never placed in first through fourth in even the best of group. It’s not just PWDS — it’s all uncommon AKC-recognized breeds. Winners are always Labs, GSDs, Poodles, Bichons, Goldens, and the like.
It was SO cool seeing a Tibetan Mastiff in the show–I’ve been in love with those dogs for years but you don’t see them too often. They are so beautiful!
We were watching the working group on rerun today since we missed it last night and Widget finally twigged that those were dogs up there and he was absolutely fascinated!. He stood in front of the TV with his ears at high alert, completely motionless except for going up closer to sniff at the dogs on the screen for about twenty minutes, watching the dogs trot up and down. Then he got a little idea lightbulb over his head and walked carefully around the TV into the bedroom to see if maybe the dogs were coming from there–it was so precious! He definitely showed a preference for dogs with prick ears and black and white paintjobs like he has.
Some of the standout dogs for me were the Weimaraner, who had such a fabulous gait and presence, the Dalmatian, who stacked like he was made of porcelain and the Neapolitan Mastiff, who had the most amazing face wrinkles I’ve EVER seen. On the other hand I remain disgusted at what’s been done to the German Shepherds–they look positively deformed in the hindquarters and don’t seem to be able to run right. I’m also damned glad that the show wasn’t won by another damned poodle, I just can’t like them no matter how many of them I meet.
Not sure if it proves or disproves you, but the beagle is in the top 3 or 5 for most popular breeds for the past 100 years. This is the first win for the mighty beagle juggernaut.
Add me to the crew who think that the sloping topline that’s the current fad in GSD’s makes the poor dogs look deformed.
My dog Jasper barks and jumps at the tv whenever dogs are on. It makes watching dog events a challenge.
For additional awesomeness, please note that Animal Planet is showing highlights (I assume) from the AKC Agility Invitational at 8pm and 11pm (it’s an hour long program).
