I’m talking of course about the 1970’s Lynda Carter “New, Original Wonder Woman” and the 1960’s “Batgirl” theme from the third season of “Batman”. (I chose not to use the “Batman” theme song since it is short on dumb lyric verses; this is more of a fair fight.)
Just to refresh your memory (and possibly drive you insane), here they are:
After 42 years, I could still remember over half of the words to the Wonder Woman theme. After 10 minutes I have already forgotten most of the words to the Batgirl theme.
Watching those videos surprised me. I had forgotten how scrawny Lynda Carter was.
I would argue that Wonder Woman is a better song but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s more of an ear worm. The falsetto in the Bat Girl song is certainly more annoying.
I never saw Batgirland thus never heard the theme. Can’t listen to it right now but I can sing the entirety of the WW theme (in fact I did it just a few days ago. None of the 20 year olds in my office had a clue what I was on about)so I think that there is some longevity. Personally I prefer Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.
Ehhh. I dunno; somehow it just have the hooky catch that bores into your brain the same way that the refrains “Wonder Woman!” and “Batgirl! Batgirl!” seem to do. It’s got the mid-70s type of blah-ness to it.
The lyrics to both are pretty bad, but I suppose “whose baby are you?” is slightly worse than “in your satin tights, fighting for our rights.”
In terms of music, there’s no contest. The Batgirl song is appropriately goofy and a takeoff of the style of the Batman theme, but it’s ear-wounding cacophony.
The Wonder Woman melody is catchy and endlessly hummable.
