Mutt – midsize, shorthaired, brown, muscular, friendly. Exactly like my friend Ed’s dog, Lily, come to think of it.
German Shepard - And I have never had a dog in my life.

English Mastiff, that’s a “real” dog.

I have Porties, but I tend to think of a Lab as a “dog dog”. Labs strike me as the default or modal dog.
Beagles, followed by pits.
Golden Retriever, because that is what’s barking in the other room while I type this.

First thing that popped into my head was a German Shepherd.
Mutt. That generic mutt tricolored fur, where you get black, white, and everything in between. Probably somewhere in the 30-40 pound range. Pretty much like this lady, who is the dog I grew up with.
My own dogs come to mind when I hear or see the word ‘dog’, of course. My life revolves around their walk schedule and meals. I have a Shepherd x Lab, Cocker x Poodle, and a Tibetan Terrier. The first is large and brown, the other two smallish, light-colored and fluffy.

A lab or a retriever. Seems to be a pretty standard answer.
Huskies sometimes come to mind too.
The first thing that comes to mind is my standard poodle, who’s lying curled up in a ball four feet away from me.
Excluding poodles, the first thing that comes to mind is a golden retreiver. But wait, I had a golden when I was a teenager.
After that, the first thing that comes to mind is Lassie. So I vote for collie.

I’ve had several Greyhounds over the years, but I consider them a special class that is somehow exalted over ordinary doghood.
perhaps I shoulda worded the main question something like I’m getting a dog. What breed do you think it is? That woulda given a more general view of dog. Unless you studied my posts or know me in real life, I doubt anyone would come up with minpin is my favoured breed. I was the type that thought small dogs are “gay”, but small dogs are pretty awesome. That said, i like it how German Shepard is up there. I think it’s the general exposure to police dogs being that breed.
