The World's Worst Beaches

See them here.

The first one listed is Chowpatty Beach in India, which is possibly a typo; seems like it should be “Cow Paddy.”

But they’re not all in the Third World. Australia, England, California and Japan are represented, too.

Huh, interesting. On a related note, I always feel a twang of pity when I see what passes for a ‘beach’ in the UK.

One of the most disappointing is the Black Sand beach in Hawaii. It’s black because it’s made of tiny bits of sharp crumbled lava. No way can you use it. Pretty pictures, tho.

Could you expand on that statement please?

I haven’t swum at an Auckland NZ beach in over 20 years. Not as bad as these, ones but the water felt “scummy” to me.

I’d nominate Revere Beach-broken glass, used syringes, and dirty water. Plus, lots of drunks, junkies, and omeless.
Anyone for a swim?

If they want to complain about Port Phillip Bay, at least they could have found a photo that had some rubbish in it.

I think a lot of them are covered in stones.

I visited a beach called Seaton Carew in the north east of England. It does have sand but that is covered in pebbles. There is also a lot of coal dust on the sand - the area used to have a lot of coal mining.

Yeah, that picture (along with the one of all the seagulls in California) stuck out like a sore thumb to me. I actually thought “that beach looks quite nice.”

It’s pretty stupid listing “Port Phillip Bay” as a ‘beach’. It’s a BAY. That stretches for about 264 kilometers. And contains hundreds of beaches. Some of them are nice, some of them, not so nice.

We have plenty of sandy beaches in England. Just because you saw a couple of stony one, it doesn’t mean they are all like that.

No, I don’t suppose they are all like that.

Three weeks ago I was surfing here. I assure you it’s not only soft sand, but stunningly beautiful. Yesterday I was sailing around here. Four weeks ago I was here, which proves that sometimes even pebbly beaches can be impressive.

The UK has a few disappointing beaches (and our weather does sometimes leave something to be desired), but then doesn’t everywhere?

Sure, they give us plenty of pictures of bad beaches, but none of Naked woman pole dances on train.

Because every time I see a picture of a beach in the UK I mentally compare it to beaches like this, and this, and this or this and this.

I’ve seen plenty of photos of Blackpool, and other holiday destinations there, and beaches on shows like Grand Designs when people want a sea change. Quite frankly it all seems very dull, filthy and just generally dirty beaches whether it’s sand or pebbles, plus the weather is awful by comparison.

How about the shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah? When you walk on the beach, a wave of flies rises in front of each foot.

The link in the OP refers to some beach as Goa Beach, India.
Where is that supposed to be? Goa has miles and miles and miles of gorgeous beaches on the Arabian sea. Are they saying it’s a bad beach because there’s a cow on it? Everywhere you go in Goa there are cows lolling about. Doesn’t mean a thing.

Imperial Beach in San Diego was a nasty place back in the 70’s. The residents of Tijuana flushed a lot of stuff down the toilet and if it floated, it ended up on Imperial Beach. We watched a kid collect over 100 tampon thingies in less than 15 minutes.

What about the the “Cajun Riviera?”

Even Thailand can have some bad beaches. I recall one time staying on Samet Island, off our Eastern Seaboard over towards Cambodia. We were at a rather isolated beach down on the southern end of the island. Every morning, medical waste washed up on shore! It seems boats take it from hospitals on the mainland and dump in the sea each night. Lovely!
