the young ones

Does anyone remember Comic Strip? I only saw a couple of episodes. One of them was shot in B&W and was set in the early 60s. Ade Edmondson played an enthusiastic groupie whose parents are out of town. He invites his ultra-hip idol (I don’t remember who that was – I think the episode was missing one of The Young Ones cast) and his entourage to the house for a party. The house is trashed, and everyone treats Edmondson like the total wally he portrays.

Mr. Hip (I don’t recall the character’s name) has some dialog that seems to indicate a girl would be more attractive without one of her legs. Eventually the girl (was it Jennifer Saunders?) hops in, having amputated a leg. She says something to the effect of “I’ve cut off my leg for you, now we can be in love.” The hipster says, “You don’t understand. It was the leg I was interested in.”

Another scene shows Rik Mayall sitting in a small bed peeling a banana. As he peels the banana he becomes more intense saying, “Oh, dear! Oh, dear! Oh, dear!”

It’s possible I still have that and one other episode (something about a “rumble”, told in a Micky Spillane style) on VHS, having taped it from whatever station it was showed on oh, so many years ago; but it was lost even before I packed my tapes away. I’ll have to search for it again when I unpack. (Whenever that will be!)

Think once.
Think twice.
Think: Don’t drive on the pavement.
Another favorite of mine is when Mike steals Rik’s biro making Rik quite angry.

Mike: It was just laying there on your desk, I thought you didn’t want it any more.

[Vyvyan has Rick trapped at one end of the hallway with an anti-tank gun.]

RICK: Vyv! Where did you get that howitzer?!

VYVYAN: Found it!

RICK: Well, you can just about bloomin’ well put it back this instant, young man!

VYVYAN: I will, I will. Just as soon as I’ve blown you to pieces.

RICK: Oh, no! Vyvyan! No! Please! You were right and I was wrong! I am a virgin!

VYVYAN: Not for long, matey.

Rik: “Its a telescope! A telescope with a mouse in it!”

But you just mentioned it? Ahhhh, logic vicious circle!

And also, you named your thread “Hey Abe Babe, In Here”, or something like that. Of course I immediately understood that it was a Young Ones thread and posted there, but a lot of people may have failed to make the connection.

Rik: “That’s just typical! Five minutes before the most important party of my life and the house is destroyed by a giant sandwich.”
