Theologically-Based Medicine and Terry Schaivo

I majored in psychology in college. I carefully read your post twice, and still don’t understand how it pertains to spiritual healing. I don’t understand how you come to the conclusion that spirituality is associated with reduced stress and feelings of helplessness. Spirituality is peace, love, and hope for the future. For those of us who have experienced spirituality it is knowing everything is as it should be. I would incourage you to read about it. Incidentally, in spiritual groups we use guided imagery a lot, along with affirmations, but most of all we feel safe, sure, and confident ofr the future.

He’s a skeptic, of course, he would say that.

You’re a cynic; of course you would say that.

Scepticism and critical thinking are invaluable tools in a world so full of BS.

I am fond of the idea that one can train one’s self to heal one’s body. To lower one’s heartrate and whatnot. Simple stuff.

Psychics and self-healing cannot replace the entirely removed brain of a woman. It is dead, and the dead cells carried off slowly by the body, replaced with cerebral spinal fluid.

If there is such a thing as a soul or spirit ( to move away from the snarkfest and return to my OP ), how can one establish whether or not it has fled the body, and when? Psychics are the answer? An empirical scientific body, respected and well-documented? I think not.

My OP was not really designed to produce a concret answer. If I felt one existed, I’d have posted in G.Q.

All comers are listened to, and respected, ok? Even if we vehemently disagree with them.

Thank you.

Well it still seems to escape you:

What you propose is a complete backtrack. Sending in some self-described ‘medium’ to ‘talk’ to Terri has no basis in reality and there is no science behind it. As a society, in both science and in law we try to avoid things that have no basis in reality. Judges do not allow lawyers to try and use magic ‘truth sticks’ to claim a witness is lying, for example.

He has good reason, beyond being a skeptic, for saying that. Scwartz has been goofing around and calling what he does science. It is nothing of the sort.

And has any jury, even one made up of true believers, ever returned a verdict that said that in this case a miracle had occurred?

You do know that John “Biggest Douche in the Universe” Edward has been weighing in on the Shaivo case, right?

Believing in God the healer doesn’t make some sick people feel less anxious? It doesn’t make them feel less helpless? People don’t experienced reduced stress when they believe prayer may help them be well?

I am not a cynic, but I agree with your other statement, I use these tools all the time.

I like your post, it has long been known that the mind (spirit) affects the body. It is possible for some Yogas to do feats like be buried in the ground for a couple of weeks in a state of “hibernation” dug up and be perfectly healthy, no it is not a trick.

As for spiritual things being like science, no, of course not. Science will never measure spiritual things with physical methods. But they keep on teaching that if we can’t measure it, it doesn’t exist. Just like the religious folk keep teaching if it ain’t in the Bible it is not of God.

Spiritual and emotional training are the same, Emotions, feelings, intuitions, thoughts, these are the things of spirit. When they are untrained they become fear, anger, hate, and suffering.

You forgot one, spirituality, our society consists mostly of people who believe in God and go to church. Just because judges may be atheististic doesn’t mean anything. Or because they put law above compassion doesn’t mean that compassion doesn’t exist in our society. It seems to me you are the one short of reality.

There have been lots of studies that go against the ideas of skeptics, and each one that does, the skeptics yell “bad science” there is nothing new in this.

No, I didn’t know that, can you provide a link. By the way John doesn’t care what people think about him, his spiritual growth is far beyond that. Maybe you should take some lessons.

No, people who truly believe in God are not anxious nor feel helpless. Danion Brinkley, a near death experiencer, was elated when he was told that his heart was giving out. He refused to sign the surgical papers. When the nurses came in, he was happy and smiling. But Dr. Raymond Moody heard about it and went to the hosptal. After a couple of days he talked Danion into allowing the surgery. Moody convinced him it was important to tell others about what experiences he had.

Yes, every time there is bad science, the legitimate scientists call foul.

I don’t think Love will regrow a brainstem.

John? John Edward?

I usually try (not always successfully, but I try) to stay out of these discussions but that has to be about the funniest thing I’ve read here. lekatt, the man is a charlatan and a scumbag who preys on the broken hearted. He would need to grow spiritually to reach the level of a mugger.

Are you reading my posts? That’s precisely what I’ve said the last two.

Not great, but it does show that he appeared on Fox News.

If I want Spirtual Growth, I’ll consult someone who knows something about it. If I want Cold Reading Skills, I’ll Consult John Edward.
