I have no interest in the PR aspect of this, but what has appeared to play out has been very interesting from a music / career management standpoint.
Taylor Swift has doggedly controlled her career. Kanye, who had previously acted rudely to her, calls her, records it, and asks about clearing some lyrics. TS is trying to be diplomatic.
But, given the snippets that have been released, he did NOT discuss the line “I made that bitch famous” with TS.
So KK is releasing snippets to prove that Kanye was a good guy, while demonstrating how he was not fully truthful in how he sought TS’s clearance.
So: TS comes across as wronged and with a legitimate beef, Kanye comes across like the provocateur he has proven to be and Kim comes across like a twit.
He must just love pushing TS’s buttons at this point.
ETA: okay, maybe this is about the kerfuffle and not about the actual music. I mean, there’s no lawsuits here, and each person ends up with their basic reputation reinforced.
Granted, I’ve only been marginally paying attention to this, because I listen to Kanye’s music, but as I understand it, Taylor Swift’s original stated grievance with Kanye was that he didn’t get permission to say he made her “famous,” or that he might try to have sex with her, and it’s only after the video came out that she changed her story to, “He didn’t say he was going to call me ‘that bitch’, tho!” Which, I mean, may be true, but from my point of view, it comes across as Taylor moving the goalposts after being caught in a lie.
Just a couple of publicity hounds who know how to play y’all! Look how invested you are in who’s right and who’s in the wrong. There is no right, or wrong. It’s all just tabloid fodder, to keep their photos on the front of papers and their names trending!
I have no dog in this hunt, but I will point out that both phrases are in the same line of the lyric - a line TS says she didn’t hear over the phone and which isn’t in the snippets KK released.
If the lyric is “I made that bitch famous” then whether she is offended by either the famous bit or the bitch bit is not the point. It was a line she didn’t hear.
Do I think TS is a publicity hound who milks her personal life for lyrics and to engage her fans? Sure. Do I think she wants this Kanye/Kim thing to keep playing out? Likely not even if she comes across as the victim here.
Yep, that’s how I see it as well (and that seemed to be her main beef when she made the speech when accepting an award saying don’t let anyone take credit for your achievements - supposedly a slap at Kanye for “Famous”). And it seems to be the way the music media is looking at this as well. The other thing is that Swift jokes about how the line will play in the media and how a feud would be good for them… and that doesn’t look good for her at all considering she actually made it into a feud.
Is this the thread where I score points by pretending to not know who these people are, but for some reason instead of googling them I reply to ask who they are to prove that I don’t know who they are?
I’m not sure didn’t know he was going to take credit for making her famous. The quotes below make it sound like she did, to me.
Yes, I read all about this. Kanye’s feuds are entertaining, whether they are real or scripted, and it was a welcome break from a depressing news cycle.
