…besides the obvious skiing.
I’m taking a trip there in a month and was looking for suggestions for apres ski activities for single types like me.
Any suggestions?
And thank you in advance.

Drink.
Drinking is pretty much a sport here too.
There are plenty of good restaurants.
In Breck –
The Hearthstone on Ridge Street.
Blue River Biestro on North Main accros from the fire station.
Downstairs at Erics is a sports bar but the service is good, and the bar food is good. It gets quite busy. It’s on Main too.
Columbine café or the Blue Moose are favorite breakfast spots.
In the town of Frisco –
The Boat Yard on Main St.
Silverheels too.
You could check out a night time sleigh ride cook out with a company call 2 degrees below zero. Or ice skate at the rink at the south end of town (check on the schedule, they play hockey too). I think you can also skate on Magie pond that’s in the Beaver run complex (I think) just ask around, anyone can point you to it.
The Country Boy Mine tour is interesting if you want an afternoon off from skiing. That’s just outside of Breck.
That depends, when you say “for single types”, do you mean where you can hook up with someone, or just someplace to go that an adult would find fun?
There is a, um, I guess I would call it fitness center in town. Yes, it has a pool for kids, but it also has a climbing wall. Other than that, the Rockies are mostly about the outdoors. On a day when you aren’t skiing, you could tube or ice climb, or skate, or cross country ski, or snow shoe, or something outdoor and cold weather related. There is also an outlet mall nearby in Silverthorne.
Otherwise, you are basically asking for the best bars or restaurants in the area.
Of course, it seems to me there is a doper on Hoosier pass or therabouts. You could arrange a dopefest.
Lest you take this as a joke, Colorado is pretty much the Napa Valley of beer. There are over 100 craft breweries and microbreweries in Colorado and they put out a jaw-dropping variety of great stuff.
Nekid hot-tubbing
There’s of course the Breckenridge Brewery on South Main. It’s probably worth one trip while you’re there, although those enipla mentioned will have more individual style. If you’re young and single it’s definately one of the main watering holes. Warning: it does get crowded in peak hours.
Breckenridge’s peaks each are suited to different styles of skiing. If you need advice there too, just ask.
ETA: If you’re looking into snowmobiling, there’s an outfit on the north side of the valley between Breck and Frisco that should be avoided. I don’t remember the name, just the location, but they limit your speed and it just wasn’t worth it.
Unlike some other nearby ski areas (Copper Mountain), Breckinridge is an actual town that happened to have a ski area developed by it, not the other way around. As such, it has things like bars and restaurants that aren’t part of the ski resort and tend to be more fun and cheaper. As far as apres ski for young single types, it’s probably the best in the Summit/Eagle County area unless you have a seven-figure bank balance.
I was planning on being there tonight as my daughter has a basketball game against the local High School, but currently there is a 40 mph wind and snow predicted for tonight. What’s it like up there right now, enipla?
Eat at Bubba Gumps, do some shopping, and (my favorite) drink.
Blue skys and looks like a light breeze from my office window (I’m actually in Frisco now).
Oh, and just by the way, have you gone from sea-level to 10,000 feet recently? Not going to get in to the altitude sickness speech if you have.
Skiing in February (or any time) can be very cold. When you get here, buy a neck gaitor. It’s basically a hat for your neck and lower face. It’s just a sleeve of fleece. It can really, really help prevent a lot of discomfort on the lifts, or while skiing. An example - http://www.rei.com/category/40003698.htm
And make sure you have goggles or a good pair of sun glasses. It is very bright at 10,000.
Thanks all for your suggestions. I used to live in Colo Springs and went skiing at Breck all the time. Breck/Keystone/A-Basin. A-basin was my favorite by far.
But, living in Colorado Springs, I usually left the mountains around 9 to be home at a decent time, so I never got to experience the night life.
I’m going to be staying right near peak 9. I figure one day at Breck and one day at A-basin.
enipla:
sleigh rides and skating just aren’t the same sans female company, however I’ll keep it in mind. I’ll Google the restaurants you mentioned. Also, thanks for the breakfast spots. It’s the most important meal, you know.
Did you survive the blizzard a few weeks ago?
OneCentStamp:
<checks list>…beer. Check. drinking. Check.

woo-hoo!
Bobotheoptimist:
I ate at the B.G in Daytona and wasn’t impressed. I have sightseeing on the list for my last morning there. As for the altitude sickness, I keep (mostly) fit, and already know to take it easy and drink plenty of H2O and not so much C2H5OH. After living in Florida, basic training in Texas, and my next two posts to Denver and Colorado Springs, I remember THAT four-day hangover VERY well even after many years.
lieu:
I’ve got a map of the peaks there, and the trails are well marked. I tend to stick mostly to greens and blues anyway. I was going to try one of the snowmobiling trips, but someone I work with told me the same thing you did. Unfortunately, that’s off the list unless I find a long lost silver vein. And I’ve been watching more live Breck cams than TV recently.
Again: thanks to all for your advice. If any local dopers want to hang out one night, shoot me a PM!
MMMM… MMMMOOOOSE…
When I lived in Breck (last decade), I used to claim that the upgrade to real maple syrup was the best twenty five cents you could spend on food in Summit County. I was sorry to see this gone from the menu last time I came through town. And I still double-take when I see the office where Shamus’ used to be.
I never said it was good, just that it’s something to do.
Myron…is that you…!?
The Breck Brewery is a hot spot as was mentioned. And also a place called 'Sherpa and Yetie’s. Iv’e never been to Sherpa and Yeties. But so I have heard (married for ten years).
No problem for me. But I70 got shut down. There where about 3000 folks that got put up in schools and rec centers. I was at work already when my boss called to say to go home. First time in at least 22 years. I drove home. Had a beer and vacuumed and cleaned the house. Such is life.
Heh. Base camp for the devils triangle. Shamus’, Fatty’s and the Angels Rest. Shamus’s is now the Back Stage Theater.
The skating is fun and very relaxed and cheap. There is also a delighful little theater that puts on some very well done and fun shows in the Beaver Run area.
I’m struggling to remember my last trip to Breckenridge. IIRC, all there is to do there is drink, wake up hung over, play rugby, drink, and drive home hung over. YMMV.
I’ve only been there a couple times, both for rugby tournaments, but I really enjoyed it there. IMHO, it was a lot less pretentious than Aspen and Vail, and seemed like a lot more fun than both of those towns.
No advice, just wanted to say I wish I were headed up that way this winter.
