Things to smear/spread/sprinkle on or otherwise apply to toast or similar surfaces

fish sauce works for both the dog and cat as appetite enhancers too. Tho I don’t recommend putting that on your english muffin!

I’ll try that! Thx!

anchovy paste - Peck’s Anchovette or Gentleman’s Relish
tapenade (I like just an olive+caper one)
muisjes and hagelslag

I’ve been reading about Gentleman’s Relish. Sounds like the kind of thing I’d like.

That looks good, too. I like anise.

Does anyone sprinkle sesame seeds on toast?

My first choice is a little butter and my mom’s wild Maine blueberry jam. We own land where blueberries grow naturally. Second choice is lots o’ butter followed by sugar and cinnamon.

Innumerable varieties of hummus and cheese

Maple almond butter

Cloudberry jam…if you can find it

I cut back on carbs, and the toughest was giving up my beloved PB&J. It had been my favorite lunch since the '50s.

So I thought “Hey, can I get partial enjoyment out of substituting something healthy for the bread?” And did a little experimentation (found a lot of “that’s not quite normal…” options, like low-carb bread).

The winner? Carrots. I remembered how good they were with sesame sticks, and I thought “a nut butter would ring those same chimes…”

So, in an attempt to make this on-topic:
I spread peanut butter* and jam on a carrot (or just dip it in).
I now look forward to this like I did my noontime sandwich: “a PB&J, hold the bread”.

*I’m switching to Trader Joe’s Nut Butter (almond, cashew, macadamia nuts, etc). So good…

I strongly advise against spooning it right outta the jar; the jar’s empty before you know it!

Taramasalata
Goat cheese and honey
Ricotta and honey
Cream cheese and blueberry jam
Lox & cream cheese

Well ya know, some jars have false bottoms so you think there’s enough in there to last you for a good long time, and it turns out there’s just enough for a few spoonfuls! In fact, that’s true of a lot of containers these days…Cool Whip for one…

Completely shocked this hasn’t been mentioned.

Bacon

It’s good on anything.

Also serves as the gateway meat for vegetarians.

Absolutely right! Bacon makes everything better!

Brown sugar and cinnamon on hot buttered toast.

Maple sugar and cinnamon on hot buttered toast.

You might need to experiment a bit for your exact proportions, but cinnamon mixed into regular old sugar and sprinkled on top of a just-out-of-the-oven sponge (sheet) cake (lightly butter the top first) is the best.

Hi quality tahini (my favorites are from Soom Foods or Seed + Mill). Maybe with some thinly sliced cucumber or bell pepper.

Peanut butter and sriracha.

Cream cheese and strawberry or raspberry jam.

I don’t do much toast myself but, having recently gotten into sardines and canned seafood, a lot of people post photos of their breakfast of fishies smooshed on toast. It’s frequently paired with avocado & egg.

Canned Seafood

apparently reddit doesn’t like it when you link to their photos

Hot buttered toast with brown sugar and cinnamon.

Hot toast with lemon curd.

Hot toast with blue Stilton.

Tuna salad (or another sandwich filling of your choice) on a hot buttered English muffin, topped with a layer of cheddar cheese and broiled in a toaster oven.

It appears they’re having site-wide problems at the moment.

Here are some photos from local food ‘personality’ Gary Wiviott, posted to LTH Forum (link to thread below) to get you by in the meantime:

And here’s a gorgeous shot of smoked salmon on toast from the source of the photos above:
