I’d like to see the Disney Channel get a whole lot Darker and Edgier.
I would like to see Netflix, or some such, get more European movies from the 1970s. They’ve thousands already but I want to view quite selectively and several I want are still not to be found.
The SyFy  Channel limit its programming to shows that are actually science fiction in nature (although I wouldn’t object to decent fantasy). Wrestling is not science fiction, nor is paranormal investigation. Classic or camp SF is acceptable, if only for the historical or humorous value; interviews with SF authors would be a nice bonus.
Expand that into a weekly or daily “Fandom Show” – coverage of SF conventions, interviews with SF authors, interviews with Big Name Fans, filksings, new-book reviews and new-film reviews presented by the guys who write them for SF magazines, etc.
George R. R. Martin complete A Song of Ice and Fire.
I’d settle for all the networks to go back to what they were originally supposed to be when they started. SyFy does Sci fi. MTV does music videos. CMT does country music. TVLand does old reruns. HLN goes back to being Headline News. The History Channel does history, etc.
They wouldn’t even have to do it all the time. Just one weekend. Just try it. Please!
Seconded.
I’d like to see Legend of the Seeker get 7 seasons.
I’d like to see the Night Watch series remade with the same actors, but this time have the films at least try to follow Lukyanenko’s books more closely. The books were exciting, action-packed, and well thought out. The movies are visually stimulating, but kind of a mess. They were hard to follow until you read the books. After you read the books, they were fucking impossible to follow.
I would like to see a version of Solaris that concentrated on Lem’s vision of the futility of trying to make meaningful contact with an alien civilization rather than just focusing on Hari/Rheya and actually ended with
Kelvin’s suicide.
And speaking of Solaris, if we can expand the topic to books, I’d like to see an English version translated directly from the original Polish instead of the French translation.
I want a BBC miniseries about Benjamin Britten, starring John Simm.
Even better – I was considering something like that, but didn’t want to jump right into the deep end. It would be nice to see coverage of SF conventions that didn’t consist of “let’s all point at laugh at the weirdos.”
I picked my particular pet peeve, because I remember when the SciFi Channel was first getting started and they had booths and exhibits at SF conventions to solicit potential viewers and encourage them to pressure their local cable companies to add it to their lineup. We all saw it as the best hope for real science fiction programming, and some of us feel betrayed by the crap we’re now being subjected to.
The Taj Mahal, but that would mean having to go to India. Guess I’ll settle for the blues musician.
I’d like to see a Dark Tower movie done properly. Preferably an HBO miniseries.
Amen to that. Instead we’ll get (if we’re lucky) a 2 1/2 hour flick with an only tangential relationship to the books, and Will Ferrell as the Gunslinger (which is only slightly more ludicrous than Will Ferrell as Sherlock Holmes-yes he really will be in that latter case).
Last Dangerous Visions.
Oh, hell no. You were a touch wrong, though. Will Ferril is Dr. Watson. Holmes is being played by… Sacha Baron Cohen.
We need a spin off thread titled “Things you never wanted to see, but you know are going to be made anyway”.
Maybe if the wrestlers wrestled oh, Cthulu? THEN it would be fantasy.
I’d love to see a Nine Inch Nails reunion.
John Denver in concert.
All four Monkees in concert.
Oh god, no. Fandom is wanky enough as it is. Giving BNFs the opportunity to voice their opinions on TV would make it about a million times worse.
For people who are smart enough NOT to be involved with fandom, one favorite fannish activity is to argue about who is, and who isn’t, a Big Name Fan, or BNF. Getting accused of being a BNF makes you a magnet for wank. Hell, I once got accused of acting like I think I’m a BNF and it got me wayyyy more attention than I wanted, or felt like I deserved.
Of course, my fandom is famous for being wanky. sigh
What’s a Big Name Fan?
Pretty much what it sounds like. Someone who’s famous in fandom, usually for being a great writer. (Or artist, if you’re in a fandom that highly prizes fanart, I guess.)
I’m into fandom for fandom’s sake, but I’m also into it because I find it fascinating as a subculture, and the phenomenon of the BNF is interesting to me. If you’re a really fantastic writer, then you get lots of comments on your fanfics and people listen to your opinion on things, about the canon material, and whatever people in fandom are arguing about at the moment. But you also open yourself up to lots of criticism. Some people just hate BNFs on principal. (Because they think they’re soooo great.)
There’s sort of a love/hate relationship. And there are people who want their fic to be popular, but don’t want the label of a BNF.
Fandom’s a lot like junior high, but with more gay porn, I guess.
Cassandra Clare is probably the best known BNF right now. (Although since she made the transition to pro author, I’m not sure she counts as a fan anymore.)
