This blows my mind (and maybe more) - Man awarded $5.89 mil for sex overdrive injury

Injured man wins damages for sex overdrive

Says the judge: “His life and the life of his young wife were shattered”

Because he cheated on her? Oh boo-friggin-hoo. And that’s worth nearly $6 million, probably driving this company into bankruptcy?

What the hell kind of head injury causes one to become an uncontrollable sex fiend anyway? Is it just because the British are generally notorious prudes that this was allowed to pass? (sorry Brit Dopers)

The article does not mention the details of the fall, whether the employer had exhibited negligence that may have caused it or not. But in any case, how can a loving God allow this sort of B.S. to happen?

The mind really does boggle.

Still, imagine the rush to his door now that the prostitues learn that he has three million pounds to hand

If I had the energy I’d pit the both of you

The poor guy suffered an accident due to the negligence of his employers.

He didn’t break his back and end up in a wheelchair. He didn’t lose his sight, or a limb. He didn’t get scars.

He lost his mind. Part of the man he was died. The man he is now has no impulse control. He says inappropriate things. He does inappropriate things. He can’t stop himself because the section of his brain that regulates behaviour got scraped off on the bottom of his skull, or killed by a clot. One day, he may get arrested for something he can’t control. But he looks the same, he talks normally. In many aspects of his life he seem the same. But he isn’t.
I feel really sorry for his wife, who really should get a lot of that money. She lost her husband, but he isn’t dead yet. He may still love her, but he will never behave as if he does, because he can’t.

For every Richard Hammond (and it may be a long time before we know that his personality has not changed in subtle ways), there are others who just are not so lucky, and undergo profound changes as a result of brain damage.

Just because it resulted in a sex addiction does not make it amusing - it’s real sad.

From the article:

Jesus Christ! He was in a* coma* for two fucking months and his doctors are quoted as saying it was a miracle he survived. That alone is worth the money (if the company was negligent.)

Here is another article about the incident. The company admits liability but contests the amount of the damages, based on the fact that he might be able to work part-time and that his wife might stick by him afterall.

This article says he had to spend time in a mental hospital after his injuries.

Sounds like a very legitmate suit to me and considering this man will probably never get better, the amount of the damages doesn’t seem inappropriate, either.

Is there not a statutory Worker’s Comp system in the UK?

You’re thinking of the worng kind of head.
Seriously though, that is pretty sad. I feel badly for both the husband and wife.

As I mentioned in the OP, the article doesn’t explain the details of how much or little negligence contributed to the fall - do you have another cite that does?

OK, I see in Lissa’s article that the company admitted liability - but after looking at the picture of the wife in the second link, I can safely say that I don’t think the man needed a head injury to get over that. It’s probably done him a service overall.

I vaguely remember a case from the 70’s where a woman was hit by a streetcar and it turned her into a nymphomaniac. Can’t find the cite but will keep looking.
Do you think my wife would understand that when I try to push her in front of a bus that I’m really just trying to help her?

Hmm. Klüver-Bucy Syndrome?

It’s a well-known fact that trauma to the brain can induce sexually weird behavior. I read some articles a few years ago about people who were having epilepsy-induced fits of weird sexual behavior – they’d cross dress or go naked to public places, things like that, when the seizures happened. Think it was seizures in the temporal lobe that caused it. Anyway, they discovered that the weird sexual behavior could be cured by giving the people drugs that prevented or reduced seizures.

So I can see how an brain injury might lead to abnormal sexual behavior. Poor guy.

I vaguely recall a movie with that premise. It was probably inspired by that case.

Did you miss the part where he banged a woman twice his age (57 as I recall). Maybe the next one will be half his age. He can’t make a judgment about his sexual behavior - nothing to do with finding hot women who are prettier than his wife. He still (in his mind) loves her. But he makes sexual approaches to other women. Any woman. Probably with absolutely no judgment of the woman at all. Some take him up, and he just does it. And he almost certainly hates himself for it, because he remembers a time when he wasn’t like that, and he can’t control who he is now. He may learn to control himself in time, or he may end up requiring full time care, or be institutionalized. Chances are, he will never be happy with who he is now. This is fairly common with people who change personality via brain injury.
