THIS is fun.

There is something terribly wrong with my tongue, and has been for the past week. There are little red bumps all over it, and it feels like it does when you have burned it. It itches and hurts at the same time. Sometimes I sit around with my tongue sticking out of my mouth to keep it from rubbing up against my teeth and bottom retainer, which hurts so much it makes me drool and my eyes water.
I know what you’re thinking, and yes, I have gone to the Dr. Or at least the doctor available to me, at the campus health center. She said it could be viral- or could possibly be a very rare vitamin deficiency, but that is highly unlikely. Well, unlikely or not, this is the girl who had the mumps AFTER the vaccination. She said come back in 5 days if it was still there- and it is after 4. Tomorrow I go back in to tell her I still have it.
OK, I know what else you’re thinking- and no, my boyfriend does not have this tongue thing nor has he ever. But suffice to say there has been no kissing since I contracted this.
Also suffice to say this just plain sucks.
Merla:mad:

Ugh, sorry to hear about that. Maybe some ice cream would help?

Hey, better check mine.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Looks good to me. Hope yours gets better, though!

Hope you got it sorted soon.

I have had problems like that before, usually gargling with some Hydrogen Peroxide clears it up in a day or two. If I eat alot of sour candy my tounge gets raw. Hope it clears up soon.

If it has three leaves, don’t lick it.

It could be an excuse to eat loads of grape popsicles, so it’s not all bad.

I hope you feel better.

Don’t laugh but… eat some yogurt. Seriously. First of all, it won’t hurt you even if it doesn’t help, but second, what you describe sounds very much like something that I had once. I called my doctor and said, “this may sound very strange, but my mouth is very acid-y.” I had bumps on my tongue and the inside lining of my mouth became very raw and …well, acidic is the only word I can think of to describe it. The doc said it was very like an yeast infection - an antibiotic clears out good bacteria while it’s clearing out bad, and as most women know, a single course of antibiotics can lead to a yeast infection. In my case, I’d had no antibiotics, but apparently this imbalance of beneficial bacteria can happen for a variety of reasons. Eating yogurt will provide you with the good kind of bacteria. I immediately ate three cartons of yogurt and was definietly improved by the next morning. I think it was only another day or two before I was back to normal.

I am not a doctor, but again, this is a simple suggestion that might help and won’t hurt, so give it a try!

Have you eaten any walnuts lately??

That sounds like what happens to me when I would eat plain walnuts. (if they’re baked in cookies or something they’re okay).

If I remember, it used to take a bit before my tongue stopped being all red and hurting.

I used to suck on ice chips and drink lots of water. Now I avoid walnuts (it took me a few times to put it together).

Hope you get well soon, that sounds awful…

Are you under a lot of stress? Run down?
Are you prone to mouth ulcers or canker sores?
Have you taken any unusual medications or eaten any unusual food?
Have you been to the dentist or orthodontist recently?
Do you have a fever?

This could be viral (oral herpes), oral thrush, an outbreak of mouth ulcers or canker sores caused by stress or hormones, a drug or food allergy or an allergy to your dentist’s gloves, mouthwash, disinfectant preparation or tooth cleaning powder.

Get some disinfectant mouth wash (chlorhexidine gluconate is good), something like a teething or mouth ulcer gel (bonjela or similar). Rinse your mouth out frequently with the mouthwash or hot, very salty water. Use the gel, and some painkillers if you’re in pain.
Drink as much water, juice or broth as you can to keep yourself hydrated.
If you are having trouble eating, make up power shakes from milk, eggs and sugar, or buy something like Complan or a protein formula which you can drink through a straw.

I had an allergic reaction to Erithromycin which left me with ulcers all over my mouth, tongue, gums and lips. Agony would not describe it. I couldn’t speak or eat and could barely drink through a straw and so I lost 13 lbs in a week. I know of what I speak!

Take some good multiple vitamins

Any chance it’s geographic tongue? It can be uncomfortable the first few times you get it, until you get used to tongue swelling.

As far as I know, it’s not treated, not contagious and perhaps an allergic or stress reaction.
