The idiots who devote themselves to lame puns are just emotionally and intellectually stuck in their infancy.
Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?
sigh OK, this thread will clearly never get back on track until someone takes the bait… I’ll bite…Orange who?
So, the issue of whether .999999999999999 = 1 is FINALLY settled! I can hardly believe after 20+ years the debate is finally over and everybody is happy with the resolution. A truly historic moment for the SDMB!
Professor, I honestly can’t believe what you said back on post #38.
I am going to post to this thread yesterday.
Talk about beating a dead horse. Look, Elendil’s Heir clearly summed up every reasonable argument to the contrary that could possibly be made in his post three weeks from now. The rest of you are just repeating variants of what’s already been spelled out.
+1
In the first place, I have never personally owned an iguana, and secondly if I did I would make it point to feed it every day and I resent the imputation that I am somehow a “neglectful person.” More importantly, though, I should point out NO ONE claimed a volcano erupted there to begin with!!!
0.999… or 1. Who cares? The only thing that matters is where the party is at!
I will concede the point. However, that still doesn’t change the fact that the colonel wasn’t present. If he had been, it’s obvious things would have gone quite differently.
I think it’s been proven as fact, but you’re too stubborn to concede a point, even when you’re obviously wrong.
EDIT: whoops, double post
I honestly cannot believe we’re still arguing about this. It’s settled math. Honestly.
Is anyone else double posting? Third time it’s happened to me this week.
Fourth time.
It doesn’t mean the bagpipes were actually used to compute fractions. Just because certain people claim to know because the colonel was an iguana owner does not prove anything. As an iguana owner (IIRC) you should know better. They have to eat. And as Elendil’s Heir so eloquently pointed out, if you have to go to New Zealand for the food, you go.

ETA: with bagpipes.
Although some ignorant savages will no doubt misquote me in the future, I am of the position that music has no place in battle, though are those who will state the fact of Scottish bagpipers …except highland regiments didn’t actually march into battle playing bagpipes in that case
C’mon, it’s really easy. All decimals that terminate or endlessly repeat can be expressed as a fraction of two integers a/b. Just tell me what integers a and b result in the repeating expansion 0.99999999… and we’re done.
Oh, and who’s there?
You’ve probably heard this before but… knock knock.
