Thought-provoking YT video about vintage stage makeup

This popped up in my “suggested videos” feed last night, and apparently those of a lot of other people too. I knew about some of the tricks used in B&W film photography, mainly using pink instead of white because pink actually photographs better as white, but I did not know about makeup for B&W films being this complicated.

13 minutes in length, and worth a watch.

It isn’t just makeup, it is sets, too. The Addams Family living room was pink.

The Lone Ranger’s mask was actually purple.

Stanley Kubrick wanted the table in the war room of Dr. Strangelove to be green to simulate a poker table although no one would know it as it was a black and white film.

I read once that Queen Elizabeth wore blue lipstick at her 1953 coronation for this sort of reason, and have always found that very difficult to believe. Any truth to it?

You be the judge - ‘rare’ colour footage.

Fun internet fact - as a lizard person in human guise, she and the other royals actually have natural blue lips.

More specifically, at around the 22:40 mark in that video. I’m not sure if there’s a better shot in the hour after that.

I dunno; it looks like a dark reddish color to me.

And Howdy Doody’s Buffalo Bob’s buckskin shirt was blue.
