Thread-ending posts

The Bad Astronomer hey that was my thread you killed :D. But actually it was a fun thread and I notice a few people have responded since you did, so you lose you threadkiller plaque (you can keep the tooth decay though).

I actually don’t mind being the last poster to a thread, it just means that my piece of wisdom was sufficient to encompass the topic.

note to our gentle readers: After the above humor please add large smillies times e[sup]1000[/sup].

Pretty reliably, yes.

Heh heh. I just sneaked in as the door was slamming on this one.

Okay, I know that doesn’t really count here. However, apparently my words of wisdom were the death of this thread

Bumbazine:

We meet again!! (I’m the one who insensitively resurrected your killed thread about the salted meats)

Being a relative newbie at the time (last week), I didn’t understand the significant accomplishment that this represents. Rest assured that I will be more careful in the future.

Feel free to kill this one. I will not again deprive you of your accomplishment.

I can’t help it. I’m weak. I can’t let this thread slip out without one more comment.

Am I posting too often in this thread?

Can I post too often in this thread?

Darn, I’ve lost the thread!

You know,I had this thing killed for 26 hours until saepiroth brought it back…Well, actually, I gave CPR at that point…

I didn’t mean for this to become a contest, but of course I cannot control (or even reliably predict) what people will do. But I should have known.

Anyway, I wonder if this will get locked by the mods? Then I’ll start a thread asking how many people have gotten a thread locked…

And, let me just hear you all give a hearty AMEN !!!

All right. I am going to start a whole new thread to keep score on who is the mightiest of thread-killers. I want to hash out the rules first, here in this thread.

Obviously, to point out that you’ve killed it opens the thread up to fresh posting. So I declare we set a time limit (T). Maybe 7 days? Maybe 14? Maybe 21? What do you think?

So the way this will work is, once you’ve been able to maintain the last post in a thread for anything greater than (T), you have yourself a point for killing that thread. Post it in the score-card thread, and then we see who really is the best.

I also propose the following rule: You can not get a point for a thread you started. The reasons for this should be obvious.

Also obvious, is that people with larger amount of posts will have a better chance. So we will keep over-all score, but the REALLY important statistics will be how many threads killed per 100 posts, or per 1000 posts.

I think the points involved should be a ratio of posts to killed threads, or the inverse. You also need to factor in ignored posts. Just because you posted last, doesn’t mean you killed the thread. Perhaps the person before you actually killed it, and your post was just ignored again.

So if you had 5 killed thread points and 100 posts you have a score of .05, and if you had 10 to 100 posts it would be .10. So it’s a percentage thing. Who can maintain the highest percentage of kills to posts. In case of a tie, killed thread points will be the tie-braking factor. (Hey, seniority has to count for something)

I don’t know about the ignored part. It would be hard to decide that. It’s mainly a matter of opinion. I could say I’ve killed a thread with intelligence and finality, and you could say everyone just ignored me.

One thing I just thought of is what about threads that have been killed, get pointed out, and come back? Once they come back could you score a kill again? So someone could conceivably get 2 points for the same thread? I’m leaning towards no. The first person who’s post is the last in the thread for a time greater than (T) get’s the point. To kill the thread you must be the first person in the thread to make a post without further response within 11 days (to assign T a value). That is to say, on the 11th day you can consider the point yours. So the waiting time is 10 days which I feel is fair.

Is this thread still alive?

I can’t answer that. I’m ignoring you.

Actually, I think the only person that can be credited with a kill, is the one who’s first post kills the thread. Otherwise you’re running into a situation where the thread has not been killed, but has just gotten old and died of natural causes.

Oddly, I didn’t swing by to kill this thread (although it wouldn’t surprise me if I did).

Just a friendly warning that threadkilling contests can get ugly and dangerous. Believe me, I’ve been there. I’ve even catered them. Knish, anyone?

(Made some great friends, though.)

For my part, I’ll say that I kill best when the victim is of my own blood. I’m one of those ‘last word’ posters. If I create a thread (which I still haven’t gotten the knack of doing successfully), I smother it with attention and suffocate it. Think Chris Farley in ‘Tommy Boy’–"…and I love it and love it and love it…"
The curse of the mediocre-minded with little to say. sigh

And I won’t look up how many threads I’ve killed. Too depressing, and not a contest my fragile ego really wants to win. I’ll just keep posting, hoping to finally say something truly memorable.
