Thread/Rule clarification.

This isn’t a complaint or anything, just wondering on some consistancy with policies.
About 3 days ago I made this thread as a lighthearted, fun way to be original. Granted it was about something that was illegal and therefore against board policy, I wasn’t being serious in it, nor would I think anyone else was. : p

But no matter, it was closed, a clear and understandable explanation was given, and that was the end of it.

But then I found two other topics in the last 3 or 4 days that are also along those lines, yet they remained open.

First off, this one.. Yes, It was eventually clothed, but only after being allowed to be held at all and only after the fact that people started straying off the topic.

And I also realize that Weed/Pot is not illegal in all places or even if one has a perscription for it, and that it’s not really equal to hiding a dead body. But I’d think it still fell under the reasoning that xash used when he closed my thread. That it is, in many places, illegal, and I can probably bet that most of the people that replied to it weren’t just usuing it for medical purposes, judging by the replies.

Still, I can understand how that topic would be allowed but not mine. After all, mine’s a bit more extreme.
I think that my second example…this topic made just earlier today is a better comparison. Now, you can obviously tell that Tuckersfan is joking around. But the actions in which are being discussed in there are still “illegal” in the sense of reality.

So just asking out of confusion…how are those threads okay, but not “Where/How would you hide a body (if you had one to hide)” not? My intention was like those threads, that were obviously successful since being allowed to stay open, namely for entertainment and humor purposes.
So I don’t really understand why it was closed but others are allowed.
Again, this isn’t a “pit”. I’m just hoping for clarification what what is deemed “illegal topic” discussion and what isn’t, espeically when both threads are, more or less, not serious.

We do strive for consistency, but as each moderator is a different person, we sometimes see things differently.

I can see your thread going either way – I can see both sides of this issue.

You could always write the moderator in question and request reopening; we’ve reconsidered and reopened threads in the past. We can be mistaken at times and can rectify when necessary.

In the “Do you smoke pot” thread, staff discussion about the subject ended with us deciding to let the situation ride and if it got into serious testimonials/true confessions/primer, we’d close it, which is pretty much what happened, as the thread diverged into a discussion into other illegal substances and when it got that blatant, again, there was no way we could let that go on.

Bottom line is we can generally discuss most everything within reason and some things that are totally unreasonable. Sometimes it depends on context; HOW something is said determines whether a topic will fly. Somtimes it depends on meaning, which may vary. When you frame your posts, try to look at it for a moment from a moderator point of view; that might help.

Wow, that was a really indepth answer. Thank you for taking the time to reply with it.

I’ve actually been taking the time off from printing out topics and reading them at home and been reading them on HERE, for the first time. I’ll put them in order of most posts, decending, from the beginning, and just read through every forums biggest topics. Been doing this for years, so I really read up on a lot of SDMB history.

My point for telling you this (Yes, I do have one!) is that you’re right…I have noticed cases where mods have reopened threads based on second thoughts and good reasoning/feedback from other members.

It’s not really that important though. I just wanted some clearing up (which you did :)). That topic isn’t the most important in the world, so it’s fine.

But thanks for giving me the Straightdope on it.
