Threads you started: Success vs. Failure

Well… I am The Hijacker!
The party was fun. But I had to take the Squeeze home early, she had a migrane. The stress of being with me, eh?

Then I went back for a while, no fireworks yet.

The AAVE discussion was probably the longest I’ve had yet. Lots of knowledgeable people here.

My post about biometrics got one answer. Oh well…

Damn, dude. You’d think you’d get your hijack fixes in the Enterprise threads or something. Can you not stay on topic at all? :stuck_out_tongue:

So far as my threads go, eh. Most of mine are usually spin offs of some other thread and Trek related so usually do pretty well with all the Trekkies we have here. The more I stray from that, the less replies I get though.

I’ve had a couple no-repliers too. They make the baby Jesus cry.

I have had some success and some failure in my own opinion. I would take into consideration what you are asking, and also which forum you are in. If I post in general questions and get more than 10 replies, I feel good about it. If that happens in MPSIMS or the Cafe, I’m not to happy. I always hope my threads go over one page for some reason, that seems to be a mark of success. Right now I have a thread in Cafe that could get to 3 pages, and that would be my best so far. You highjackers need to check it out: Who gets more action?

I feel pretty stupid when I start a thread, someone gives a response, and that’s it. I’m not afraid to admit I have a lot to learn though, so I am going to keep on asking.

Well said.

If I get the answer(s) I was after in GQ, then the thread was successful. The same would apply in any forum where I’m after some specific piece of fact or opinion.

Otherwise, if the thread is open-ended and doesn’t look for a specific fact, or if it’s in the polling category, I tend to look at the replies/views ratio. Since I assume that 1/10 is “normal” (in the sense of “about average”) any thread with better than that is a success, and one with a lot less is a failure.

One other component: if it’s obvious my wording was ambiguous or unclear and could be fairly interpreted in some other way from what I really intended, I can’t regard the thread as a success if there are many “right answers to the wrong question.”

==============================

Anybody have a hunch about which thread(s) in, say, the past year has/have the highest reply/view ratio?

I wrote a topic once ‘Do you have cellulite?’ I didn’t get one response

They did enjoy my topid of ‘Cereal or Milk first?’

So far I’ve authored more than one disappearing threads. Not that I tried to.

Zero replies in any forum would, I guess, constitute a failure. A truly successful GQ thread might get one accurate and complete reply. Same with ATMB. Here at the bar, who knows?

I haven’t ever started a thread. I’m happy enough adding on. I don’t read all the threads that are started, but if it’s got a catchy or interesting title, chances are I’ll read it.

Well, CCR was pretty good. Only 3 original members. No Fohgarty. Whichever way he spells it.

The guy who did the lead vocals was good, but he looked younger than me. And he must be a body builder, cause DAMN!

In ATMB, it’s not too unusual to see views and posts with much wider ratios than in GD. From what I’ve seen anyways…

I don’t start many threads, but the few I’ve started have always grown to 2+ pages.

I consider that a measure of success.

This thread has been more of a success than some.

I haven’t started a thread in a while, but when I do, It end to aim for the 1:10 ratio. So, if I have gotten 133 views, I’d like 13ish replies. But really, I don’t care very much… Often just posting the thread makes me happy.

I have started very few threads and most haven’t been that successful.

That doesn’t worry me as much as the amount of threads I have outright killed. I do not try to do this. I try to post an intelligent or funny comment, but somehow I murder about a third of every thread I post in.

In fact Zeldar, I’d be worried for this thread right about now.

NothingMan, I know that feeling all too well. Your basic Kiss of Death. It’s hard to tell if my ratio of reasonably successful threads started to duds is any better than the threads I just post to that continue after I post and the ones that have no additional posts.

Every now and then I’ll look back on those I’ve blessed with a comment and which have stalled out, just to see if I can tell what the trick is. There are some threads that need to die, and maybe my secret venom could be applied. I just don’t know the secret to killing threads with 100% accuracy yet.

My threads have a tendancy to die rather quickly. But then I don’t start them that often.

If you will note the dates on the posts in this thread you’ll see that I bumped it from a last reply on 07-06-2003 06:04 AM by Audrey Levins to place a link to a newer thread that’s been getting some reasonable play.

I justify the bump by way of several references to this very thread as being “unintentionally funny” and “a crazy hijack.”

Thanks to my good buddy NoClueBoy for some July 4th shenanigans and for being a willing co-conspiritor in the early hijacking of what might have been a die-on-the-vine thread.

If this thread goes back to sleep (and it might since the thing sat idle for quite a while and here I am applying the Kiss Of Death to it) I’ll not be the one to awaken it again. Of course, if somebody else does, who am I to avoid a little fun?

I was wondering how this thread got so many responses overnight…

In my short time here I’m 2-3 or 3-4 sucessful. I don’t remember. The other was a drunken rant. Maybe I should quit drinking…NAH!

The only other board I’m on, I’m maybe 60-40 sucessful (smaller Orioles board.) I’ve had several threads just get immediately deleted or flamed, so that’s pretty cool!

Do you count those as successes or failures?

If the mods have to react, that’s a success!

I suppose here at SDMB, since you only get one or two free rides before being warned and maybe one more before being shown the door, that Success one place might be Failure the next?

Or have you managed to stay under the radar here, too?

((BE careful in your reply, a Mod might be watching.))
