Wikipedia is correct. And that is the design they were wearing.
Opus: Dandelion break.
IIRC, one was killed for that.
There is so absolutely much totally fucking wrong with (what this likely is) this that I wouldn’t know where to start.
But – because of the razor-sharp intellect of people who would carry out this kind of hate crime (regardless of which way this one turns out) – imagine being any nonwhite person in the US.
Remember the Sikhs getting attacked after 9/11 (1pp PDF)?
Just … Ugh!
ETA: Sorry, @thorny_locust . I missed your post ![]()
I heard it reported that due to a lack of any doorbell cam type of footage, or witness leads, the cops went old school knocking on neighborhood doors to ask if anyone saw anything.
When they knocked on the suspect’s door, he was kind of freaked out that the cops had found him, and was like: “Alright, you got me.”
And the cops were like: “Oh really? What did you do?”
I watched the press conference today, and the police chief talked about the canvasing. They would have been knocking on doors no matter what. But they didn’t have enough to search places where no one let them in; some reports had the shooter running away. No one answered the door at the suspect’s house yesterday. Today, he answered, and said “I was expecting you, I want to speak to a lawyer.” The cops said “What for?” hoping to draw out more details, but the suspect just wanted a lawyer at that point.
How’s that ‘not guilty’ plea going to work? They going for insanity?
Isn’t asking that question after “I want a lawyer” prohibited?
As far as I can tell, he wasn’t in custody yet, so there’s no prohibition on asking questions.
Is a request for a lawyer typically enough to warrant an arrest sans any other evidence?
His mother has assured us that he’s always been very kind and loving.
No problem! And you had the cite, which I didn’t.
No, it’s not. Wanting to talk to a lawyer isn’t evidence of anything.
Mother Superior jumped the gun…
That would be insanely draconian.
A lawyer is a professional with expertise in the law, and consulting one when dealing with a law enforcement issue is not only common but very sensible. This would be like assuming that anyone who tries to see a doctor has some horrible illness and should be forced into quarantine.
It’s literally in the Bill of Rights, the 4th Amendment. Cops can’t just arrest you based on a hunch.
Well, I really did know that, but failed to articulate my concern properly. From the way the story was being told, it sounded like the cops showed up as part a routine questioning of any possible witnesses and then arrested the guy when he asked for an attorney.
But I assume, something else he said must have given them probable cause for a search warrant. That’s a part of the story I guess I haven’t heard.
Sorry, didn’t mean to sound so ignorant.
Even though this is the Pit and I can say, “EAT SHIT MOTHERFUCKER!” I didn’t mean to be condescending either, sorry.
I think it’s fair to say that if you ask to see a lawyer, that might make the cops suspicious, and might change the way they run the investigation. There’s certainly nothing illegal about that. That might then lead them to uncover evidence that would lead to an arrest.
I’m sure that there was something that gave them probable cause about this guy. Maybe a witness’s description, maybe something he said that made it clear that he was involved, maybe they saw a weapon that matched what was used at the scene, who knows. That info might not be public since this would presumably be an ongoing investigation, and there might not be any info available until and unless there’s an indictment. But yeah, there was something else that led to them arresting him.
Oh, no apology necessary. I really did do a piss poor job of wording my question/statement.
My actual question should have been, what else did he do to get arrested. I was just trying to be too cute.
I know the mother of one of the victims, when I worked in Ramallah, I had dinner at their house and remember her son when he was very polite tween. I just don’t have words for how awful, outrageous and upsetting this is.
I’d like to know how the suspect knew the men were speaking Arabic, unless he knew some of that language himself.
I’m hoping it was a random act, but it probably wasn’t. I also hope these young men all make complete recoveries.
Some people just have issues with “brown people” in general.
BTW, there were European Muslims who hid Jews in WWII Europe.
