Heard this on the radio this morning. It’s not known what the motivation for the crime was, but reports were that no words were exchanged, so it looks as if the three men were shot simply because they were wearing kuffiyes and were speaking Arabic.
If only they had been armed - A good palestinian with a gun - shit, I can’t even fathom what the hell is wrong with these swirling toilet deluded deplorables. “Close the borders, build walls”, wait, what? They’re american citizens (two) and a legal resident? How’d that happen? Republicant heads explode.
How easy is it to visually distinguish Palestinians from other people? My guess would be that they look like hundreds of millions of other people from the Middle East. And thus that the guy who shot them did so for some other reason than that they were Palestinians.
As CalMeacham states:
So if true, they could have been identifiable as such.
From the linked article, "…“wearing a Kuffiyeh and speaking Arabic.”
So wearing strange headgear and not speaking 'murican is a shooting offense.
arrgghh - instant ninja - curses!
Grrrrr.
This is going to get worse. It has been going off the rails, and it’s going to get worse. Not just with regards to Jews and Muslims, and not just in the USA.
My brother-out-law (long time boyfriend of my deplorable sister) decided to open this mornings family WhatsApp with:
- it was probably a personal beef, could even be self defense
- where’s the presumption of innocence when the alleged shooter is a white guy
- this is what happens when you plunk down people who don’t fit in with the culture into a previously homogeneous place
This chap is still ranting about Lewiston ME. Not the recent shooting, but the resettlement of Somalis there in the 1990s.
It’s not even like he was reacting to anyone saying anything about this. His post was at 5:30am when the rest of us had not even seen the news.
Unless there is something major that we don’t yet know, this is as bad as it gets. The culprit should get the maximum sentence for attempted murder, and the 3 maximum sentences should NOT run concurrently, they should be served one after another after another. Adios, scumbag!
The thing I find interesting is that there are anti-Islamic hate crimes going on, and anti-Semitic hate crimes going on at the same time. I don’t think, however, that Muslims are actually perpetrating the anti-Semitic crimes and I don’t think that Jews are perpetrating the anti-Islamic crimes (outside of clashes at protest demonstrations). I assume that the people doing these hate crimes are generally uneducated, low-life idiots. Is there any data on this?
I’m curious what the data shows, too. But that’s my impression as well. It’s not Muslims assaulting Jews in the US, nor vice versa.
Per the article:
Jon Murad, Burlington chief of police, said in the news release that “no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime” but urges the public to “avoid making conclusions based on statements from uninvolved parties who know even less.”
Based on that, I am hoping that they are looking at this as a likely hate crime and if there is evidence of this (as I expect there will be) then they will prosecute it as such.
And if that’s the case, there’s actually an opportunity for Jews, Muslims, and non-bigoted other folks, to actually try to get together to fight this crap.
They would look like very many other people from the Middle East, yes. And the sort of character who would shoot them for being Palestinians would be the sort of character who would assume that everyone from the Middle East is interchangeable with everyone else from the Middle East. They all might as well be Palestinians, quite likely, to the shooter.
I’m very glad that the police have a suspect. I hope they’ve got the right one.
Oh, yeah.
We’re all othered. And we’re all in danger. (Though at least at the moment I’m probably less so than most.)
My impression also.
True even if it is the case; as even if it is the case, it clearly isn’t anywhere near majority behavior.
Yes, in the US, Jews and Muslims generally have similar interests. I have a friend who worked at a kosher slaughter house 3 or 4 decades ago, when it was hard to buy halal meat in the US. One of their revenue sources was Muslims who would buy a live chicken from them and use their equipment to slaughter the chicken. The rules for kosher and halal slaughter are similar enough that if a Muslim used their shop to kill his own chicken, it was halal.
Jews were regular customers at the Arab-run shops selling Middle Eastern food, too.
The men were all wearing Palestinian Keffiyehs, which is a national symbol. If I saw them I’d assume they were Palestinian, though there was a period in the eighties where keffiyehs were fashionable among white people.
Ah. I didn’t realize the keffiyeh was specifically Palestinian.
Of course, the shooter may or may not have known that. After 9/11, people were attacked for wearing Sikh turbans.
– for what it’s worth, Wikipedia says:
The keffiyeh or kufiyya [ , , , ] is a traditional headdress worn by people from parts of the Middle East (especially in [Saudi Arabia, the [Gulf States, [Iraq, [North Africa and [Turkey).
That article does also say:
The black and white chequered keffiyeh has become a symbol of [Palestinian nationalism
so it reads to me that it’s the particular pattern which is Palestinian; though I recognize Wikipedia may not be a definitive source.
It is not. (Who claimed it was? That would be absurd.)
Probably they are talking about imitating Yasser Arafat:
Though, while chequered black-and-white is indeed a kind of “Palestinian keffiyeh”, if you go to a place that sells keffiyeth black and white is just one style you can get alongside red and white, pure white, blue and white, whatever
They were wearing the Palestinian Keffiyeh. I mentioned that in my post.
I thought that was what @Larry_Borgia meant; but apparently it wasn’t.
