I have four words for Joe Biden: You, sir, are and idiot.
Many smart people misspell words, and many smart people are not really good at mathematics. The only politicians who make gaffs are those who go “off script.” I don’t think Joe Biden is an idiot, and neither is Dan Quayle. Not even George Bush–he’s just arrogant and sloppy. Joe Biden was also sloppy–not because he can’t count, but because he was speaking extemporaneously, and was using a rather hackneyed rhetorical ploy. Three letters are more convenient than four.
Cognitively, plural forms are not necessarily natural. Many languages, such as those of East Asia, don’t have plural forms. Yeah, I know Joe Biden isn’t from East Asia, but he was obviously focusing on “work” = “job.” Does “work” have five letters?
Yeah, like all those pit threads that people started calling McCain an idiot for accidentally saying “my fellow prisoners”.

Actually, that was pretty funny. Stupid thing for Biden to say. But he’s still far, far, smarter than Sarah Palin. Obama still gets my vote, even though he was once in the same city as a known domestic terrorist.
Dan Quayle isn’t an idiot because he spelled a simple word wrong. He’s an idiot because he “corrected” the student who had spelled it right.

My god, if this minor gaffe makes Biden an idiot we will need an entirely new classification of stupid to describe every single sound that comes out of Sarah Palin’s mouth. She takes it to a whole new level.
It was a stupid mistake for Biden to make, but it’s not as if he hasn’t made gaffes of this sort before. He has, and he’ll probably continue to do so. Neither party has a monopoly on stupidity, just as neither party has a monopoly on intelligence.
It’s almost as if it’s a sacrilege on these boards to say something negative about the Dems. It’s not that their shit doesn’t stink, it’s just that they’re a better option than the Pubs.

I’m sorry, but that is just not correct. Dan Quayle was and is an idiot of limitless depth and breadth, and I will not have you pin his idiocy on just one instance. The pit of his stupidity is bottomless, although you couldn’t dampen the soles of your shoes in the mudpuddle of his talents. He was a fool and a clown whose only talent was looking good for the camera.
I* like *watching politicians make simple mistakes. It’s kind of like watching people stumble or trip. I secretly laugh inside every time.

Biden sometimes makes me laugh on purpose, and sometimes makes me laugh by accident.
His propensity for this sort of thing is the reason I thought the McCain campaign made a mistake in hiding Palin. The reason few people think Biden is an idiot is that he is so familiar and talks so much that his many stumbles are simply “Joe being Joe.”
The reason many people think Palin is an idiot is that she is so unfamiliar and talks so little that her stumbles become that much more noticeable.
But anyone who doesn’t think Biden is prone to dumbassery hasn’t been paying attention.
