Couldn’t get past the first 10 minutes myself. It just comes across as so ‘set up’ to me. Nothing looks real, and I’m still not sure why I should care about these people. Is it because her father was a mobster years ago? Or am I supposed to be in wonder at their massive riches? Yeah! Watching people flaunt their (questionably legally obtained) wealth like it’s water is my idea of entertainment.
Funny thing is, I was going to open a thread myself on this show, but my take is very different. I love this woman’s balls. I love how she read that old man so quickly, and left him in the dust just exactly when and how she should have. I love how she copes with a house full of adolescent testosterone. I love that she wouldn’t let the one son go to the party in the Hamptons unless he went to the prom, and she actually held her ground despite his temper tantrums. I love how she finally dealt with the ATV by getting in it and letting her son drive her around. I love that it’s a normal household (albeit a grand house) with three brothers fighting like dogs and cats until Mother’s Day, when she awakens to find a breakfast in the dining room that they had planned for her. And I love how she cried and described how sweet it was to wake up on Mother’s Day not having to make breakfast and not having to endure the boys’ fights, while in the other room they are slapping each other about the face and calling each other names. I watched both installments, and by the end of the second one, the show had really grown on me.
The commercials for this show were enough for me. But your statement here does give me an idea…how come there’s never been an Amish crime show? Now that has potential…
I mean, her interactions with the real estate agent were so obviously rehearsed. “The boys obviously don’t want us to move…look at the garbage lying around, and the back door open.”
I’d like to think that no matter who I was, if some production company claimed to want to do a reality show about my family but then immediately started in with setting up fake scenarios, I’d be out of there.
I have read this post five times and I cannot understand what you mean. “…she feels the same way” as in she prefers to have made-up stuff on the show, or “…she feels the same way” as in she agrees with me that she would prefer to drop out…but can’t?
Don’t get snippy with me just because you fell in love with people who were acting.
So would you classify Growing up Gotti as more Arts or Entertainment (this being A&E it’s presumably one or the other)?
I can’t wait for their next reality offerings. I’m guessing Who Wants to Marry Tony Randall’s Widow? or Stalking Abe Vigoda will be their Fall break-out hits.
Snippy? It seems to me that this will constitute the third post in this thread that has not been snippy. I meant that maybe she feels the same way as what I quoted you as saying: “I’d like to think that no matter who I was, if some production company claimed to want to do a reality show about my family but then immediately started in with setting up fake scenarios, I’d be out of there.” Maybe you are not the only person who would not put up with fake scenarios. Maybe she wouldn’t either. Therefore, maybe your presumption that her scenarios were fake was mistaken. Why must it be that you are a decent person but she is not? Your premise that she would put up with fake scenarios is illogical. You do not know her.
I said it in an earlier thread, and I’ll say it again. John Gotti was scum. He was a vile, disgusting human being. The people on this show are living in a house paid for with blood money.
If this was a show about how she renounced the evil that her family had done, and the money that came as a direct consequence of that evil, that would be one thing. It might not be interesting, but at least it wouldn’t be despicable.
As it is, this is a show celebrating money that was earned through murder, extortion and torture. The ONLY reason this show is on the air is that these people are related to John Gotti. The only reason John Gotti is a celebrity is that the was an evil human being.
Amen brother, and testify. All I could think of just from the clips I saw is “every ornate rug and gaudy lamp in that place was paid for by heroin, loan sharking, theft, etc., or from money from legitimate businesses begun with money made in heroin, loan sharking, theft, etc., or from royalties from mediocre books that were published because the author has a famous name associated with heroin, loan sharking, theft, etc.”. I’m surprised that A&E hasn’t come under more attack from the right, who in this case would be justified.
The house portrayed in this show is not the house of the late John Gotti. Victoria Gotti was married to Carmine Agnello…see his story here:http://www.ganglandnews.com/column241.htm
They are divorced. He’s in the can until 2008. The three sons are so much him, it is frightening. Did anyone understand half of what came out of their garbled mouths? Keep tabs on these three in the future. They will follow daddies path, I guarentee it.
