Thunderstorm Appreciation Thread

There’s a colossal rainstorm running over my house. Several huge thunderbolts have just gone off right in my backyard; I’m tempted to go looking for smoking craters tomorrow morning.

I love thunderstorms. Rain gets me depressed, but thunderstorms somehow make me happy. Maybe it’s the raw fury of nature at its best; maybe it’s the imminent fear of a lightning strike that gets my heart palpatating, and I love the sheer rush of it.

Thought I’d share. Any other Dopers love thunder as much as I do?

I love the roar and pop of thunder and seeing the flash and fury of lightning!

I also enjoying watching a good thunderstorm. I have always been fascinated by weather. I’ve even videotaped some thunderstorms to make video captures of the lightning strikes.

Ooo I love thunderstorms… the coolest one I ever saw (and you might not believe this) was a thunder and lightning storm… while it was snowing. It was wicked… the combination of light and sparkle off snowflakes… I would love to see that again.

The best photograph I’ve ever seen was of a lightning strike over Sydney. I don’t know how the photographer did it (I sure wouldn’t want to be out taking photos in a thunderstorm) but it was a real attention grabber.

Me, too. I really missed them when I lived in San Diego. Unfortunately, here in CO we often have dry thunder storms which are not good in our current drought situation.

You take lighting photos by setting the camera on a tripod and either use a long timed shutter opening (if the lighting is comming fast and steady) or just use a ‘bulb’ setting where you press a button to open the shutter and then press it again to close it. You don’t have to have ‘fantastic timing’ to catch lighting on film.
I love a good thunderstorm.
