There’s a colossal rainstorm running over my house. Several huge thunderbolts have just gone off right in my backyard; I’m tempted to go looking for smoking craters tomorrow morning.
I love thunderstorms. Rain gets me depressed, but thunderstorms somehow make me happy. Maybe it’s the raw fury of nature at its best; maybe it’s the imminent fear of a lightning strike that gets my heart palpatating, and I love the sheer rush of it.
Thought I’d share. Any other Dopers love thunder as much as I do?
Oh, I love thunderstorms! Especially over the water or in the woods.
My parents have the best of both worlds. A hunting lodge near the lake off in the woods near their house. We could sit out on the porch and watch hell break loose.
My son loves bad weather.
He sits in front of the weather channel, and if theres a warning locally (like there was last night) he watches that, hoping that the tornado warning will come Our way so we can go down the cellar.
Then he keeps looking out the window, “Look how dark the sky is!”
Having lived all over the U.S. I am a bit of a Thunderstorm critic at this point. My favorites were the ones in the mid-west. The flat country really shows them off well. Plus working in the Sears Tower you could really see some whoppers hitting the city. Excellent light shows with the building getting hit a couple times a storm, or even better the buildings close to you-- neat!
I watch the radar map and wait for the incoming boomers. Last night, (I’m across the river from you in Philly where I grew up) we got rocked in Gloucester county. The back of my house faces West…so I always draw back the curtains on my two big family room windows and sliding door and watch the mayhem.
I like running around outside securing everything. I watch the radar screens and plan for the storm.
When we looked at houses, I preferred a house that faced East so that I could watch the storms roll in from the back of my house.
I love thunderstorms. I’ve lived in big T all my life & have witnessed some whoppers. A couple of weeks ago we went camping & watched a thunderstorm coming toward us from across the lake. It was miles away & we could see these tiny little pricks of light stabbing the ground over and over. Since it was coming in our direction the lightning never moved across the sky, so it looked like the bolts were hitting the same spot repeatedly.
I just love any kind of rain at night. I always sleep harder when it’s storming outside. And the bonus is that my g/f is terrified of thunder so she cuddles up closer!
