Tim Tebow..

Facing pro defenses, notoriously much faster and harder hitting than anything on the college level. Well, Jason Witten anyway. Who the hell is Brandon Pettigrew?

Having done it in the NFL.

Lions’ first rounder last year.

Anyway, you can’t base comparisons with Tebow with what they’ve done in the pros, since for obvious reasons Tebow hasn’t done anything.

In effect, he’s saying “Tebow can’t be an NFL tight end because Jason Witten is an NFL tight end”. You might as well say that nobody but Jason Witten can be a pro TE.

There isn’t a quote I can find more recent than February 2009 from Gruden, and it’s more fawning than actually objective. I don’t trust a thing Dungy says regarding prospects, because he bases his personnel decisions on bullshit like “doing it right” (read: I only want Christians on my team). That’s why Bill Polian makes the hiring decisions in Indianapolis, not the head coach.

False. He’s simply saying that your “[Tebow] is going to be much better with the ball in his hands than any NFL tight end” is a statement based completely outside of reality - nothing else. Tebow could very well be an NFL TE - but he hasn’t done ANYTHING up to this point to suggest any sort of success at that level/position. All we do know is that he’ll be slower and smaller than the average TE. If he does succeed, it will because of his weekly ritual sacrifices to David Eckstein and Darin Erstad.

You forgot to quote Point 2.

Rubbish. It’s based on the fact that Tebow was the primary ballcarrier for a team in the closest thing college football offers to the NFL - the SEC.

That is not to say that he can either block or catch - nobody has any idea if he can - but if Witten was coming out this year you’d be a fool to assume that he’s a better runner than Tebow.

So let me get this right. We’re comparing Tim Tebow, someone that wants to be an NFL quarterback, and someone that still has a puncher’s chance at riding the pine and becoming a quarterback through seasoning to a proven NFL tight end and another very promising, young tight end.

What a stupid comparison. We’ve got less than no idea on this matter.

A fool, maybe, but almost certainly a correct fool.

Hey, it’s not my comparison. I just commented favorably on his ability as a runner.

Fair enough. My bad.

All things in context. Witten in college never started with the ball from the backfield in a shotgun formation. TEs tend to catch the ball downfield and begin running from transition. These are different skillsets that Tebow has never displayed (or had the opportunity to display). The comparison and assumption simply cannot be made at this time. He’s a great athlete - I’m sure he can learn a new position that fits him physically. But right now - not so much.

Eh, running is running. I have absolutely no doubt that if he transitions to TE he’ll average more than 12 yards per catch. I have much doubt that he’ll actually be able to catch.

There’s this guy who plays for the Steelers named Hines Ward who played QB at Georgia. I hear he’s rather good. (Of course, he also played a few other positions there, but who’s counting? :stuck_out_tongue: )

That Anquan Boldin guy’s not bad either (though he played quarterback and wide receiver in college). Matt Jones had a 1,000 yard season for sure until the whole coke thing.

Let’s review, and then I’m going to drop it, because for fuck’s sake.

As a QUARTERBACK he hovers around 240, combine weight 236, which I imagine he’s been keeping down for the shuttles and sprints. Was it a reasonable or a crazy thing to say that he “could very easily” be larger than average as a tight end if he needed to? Can a former college quarterback very easily add 15-20 pounds and approach 260? Is six-foot three, two hundred sixty pounds larger than Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jeremy Shockey, Dallas Clark, and pretty much every notable NFL tight end (particularly the ones used as pass-catchers, which Tebow presumably would be) other than the two behemoths mentioned as counterpoints? Well, yes. A little short, but by adding a little weight Tebow would be definitely above average.

Tight ends at the combine, who have been playing tight end already and so have been working on bulking up already:

Byham, Nate TE 6’4" 268 Pittsburgh -
Dickerson, Dorin TE 6’4" 226 Pittsburgh -
Dickson, Ed TE 6’4" 249 Oregon -
Dray, Jim TE 6’5" 246 Stanford -
Eldridge, Brody TE 6’5" 261 Oklahoma -
Epps, Dedrick TE 6’3" 250 Miami -
Geer, Riar TE 6’3" 256 Colorado -
Graham, Garrett TE 6’3" 243 Wisconsin -
Graham, Jimmy TE 6’6" 260 Miami -
Gresham, Jermaine TE 6’5" 261 Oklahoma -
Gronkowski, Rob TE 6’6" 264 Arizona -
Harbor, Clay TE 6’3" 252 Missouri State -
Hernandez, Aaron TE 6’2" 245 Florida -
Hoomanawanui, Michael TE 6’4" 264 Illinois -
Mastrud, Jeron TE 6’5" 256 Kansas State -
McCoy, Anthony TE 6’4" 259 Southern Cal -
Moeaki, Tony TE 6’3" 245 Iowa -
Peek, Colin TE 6’5" 254 Alabama -
Pitta, Dennis TE 6’4" 245 BYU -
Quarless, Andrew TE 6’4" 254 Penn State

So Tebow’s at the bottom of the range heightwise, but within the range. And he’d need to add 20 pounds to be above average bulk. Exercise for the reader: is it hard for an NFL player to add 20 pounds, and if so, was it such a fucking disingenuous thing to say that he could do it.

If not, I mean. If it’s not hard. Obviously.

The Detroit Lions have a 3rd string QB, Stanton, who was a local player with a bad throwing motion. They spent a lot of time changing his motion but it seems to have not worked very well.
I think throwing motion is over rated. Unitas had a shot put motion. If he can hit the spot with speed, then forget about it. Throwing has to be natural. You can not be thinking about it.

Probably true in general, but then, Tebow doesn’t exactly hit spots.

Jesus fucking Christ, take a goddamn chill pill. The quoted post that got your panties in such a wad contains the caveat that “you may be right.” You really need to get over this complex you have where you have to come out and attack anything I say that deigns to respond to something you say.

He’s fucking SHORT. “Larger than average TE” is flat out WRONG. Get over it.

Your post didn’t, um, get my panties in a wad, and, well, your response is kind of funny in that context. Your post left open the question of whether I really believed it, so I reviewed what I actually said.

On the plus side, though, since I’ve now learned that we apparently have something personal going on (?) that has given rise to a complex on my part (?) I give you my full assurance that we won’t have this problem again.

Lie to yourself all you want. I’m not buying it.
