Time for my Annual Bad Film Festival!

I’ve been having one of these every year since the mid-1980s (since before Mystery Science Theater 3000, in fact). The trick is to pick movies that are *entertainingly * bad.

This year the theme is Bad George Pal movies.

I love George Pal for giving us Destination Moon and H.G. Wells films and his puppetoon films, but he made some awful stuff, too.

This year I’m showcasing Doc Savage, Man of Bronze. I’ll be handing out copies of The MSTification of Doc Savage:

I’ll also be showing Atlantis: The Lost Continent. I saw this as a kid, and was much impressed, but as I got older I could see how awful it was. Now I look at it and point to all the costumes and props from Forbidden Planet and comment on how Edward Platt (“The Chief” from Get Smart) got such a rotten role, and how John Dall evidently got typecast as the smarmy villain, especially in Classical World movies. http://us.imdb.com/Name?Dall,+John

I’ll probably also give out The Eye of Argon and see how far people can get through reading it without breaking up:

Ah, the Eye of Argon drinking game – start reading it, and when you crack up, take a shot and pass the script to the next person.

Someday, I’ll play with a group of people who manage to finish the entire text before running out of alcohol. However, given that I started reading it again and couldn’t keep a straight face past the first sentence, I’m not optimistic.
