sorry people, connectivity problems
Tina safely arrived in Whitehorse an epic thirteen days after leaving Topeka.
It seems that she went on the Postal Systems version of the Greyhound Bus Tour From Hell. Either that, or they routed her through Outer Mongolia and Timbuktu.
After arriving, she did have to have a couple days rest before beginning the whirlwind round of social activities. We’re starting off a little slow, she is a gently bred young bear from the Bible Belt after all, and we don’t want to scare her…
Last Friday, Tina and I went to work together, and she was a hit. I had to pry her away from the ladies in Toll (I work for the telephone company) in order to take her on a tour of the exchange. We now have photos of Tina nestled into one of the wiring racks, and balanced on the shelves of one of the main switches. As well as perched on a bunch of expensive computer stuff.
Gotta wait 'til I finish the roll and scan them in…
Friday night was a washout - I was bagged and wasn’t about to allow anyone to abduct Tina and expose her to all sorts of sordid goings-on without my expert guidance. However…Saturday my lovely children were taken off our hands and my husband and I took her to the Breakfast Club. AKA the 98 Hotel, this place is the first bar that opens for the day. Since they close at 10:00 pm, that enables them to open around 7:00 or 8:00 am.
Judy immediately kidnapped Tina and proceeded to help me introduce her around. We also discovered that, interestingly enough, Tina likes peach cider, just like me. She had her picture taken with Ruth the beer goddess, and with Judy, then we went on a scenic tour of Grey Mountain, for more photo ops.
Alas, Tina had perhaps had just a little too much cider, as she kept falling off the various perches we found for her. However, a few were taken that she won’t find too embarassing… ha, wait 'til I take her to the Pink Pit…[sub]well, I’ll be durned, I didn’t know Nathan put photos up, no none of them are of me[/sub] The Pink Pit is the New Westminster Hotel, and it has got to well, sorta be experienced. Interesting bunch of people…
Tina will be going on the Great Yukon Search For Spring this weekend. A group of us go camping during this long weekend every year. Basically, we go out into the bush and fool around, go fishing, hiking, chase kids around, sit by the fire and drink beer… you get the general idea.
We found a bush road that takes us to a pothole lake about two hours from town for this years expedition. Fortunately, the only mosquitoes that are out at the moment are the big slow ones, so as long as we remember the baseball bat, we should be OK. I’m not particularly worried about Tina’s larger, live cousins either. We will have a couple of dogs with us, among other sensible things.
Further planned adventures: a tour of the SS Klondike II, Diamond Tooth Gertie’s, and the World’s Smallest Desert. And I’ll try to keep you updated on her adventures in the real Great White North.
After all that, Tina would like to rest on the plane…
After much thinking about it, everybody I know already has stuff from the North…anybody else out there keen to host a bear on tour? I wanna send her someplace interesting.
