To Boldly Chew

Two and a half years ago, I recieved a gift of a very nice gift box containing a lot of chewy-type candies: Tootsie Rolls, gummi candies, those caramellish candies with the weird milkyish stuff in the middle, and so on. I had a little bit, and then I tied it up in a plastic bag to protect it from crawlies (all the candies were individually sealed anyway).

Just now I got a little craving for some sugar, but nothing’s in the house. Wait!, I remembered! I still have that two-and-a-half-year-old box of candy in my desk drawer! So I went and opened it up, and it looked the same as it ever did. I timidly opened up a “lemon-flavored” tootsie roll (?!) and bit down. A little stiff, but good as any. Plus, this is some vintage shit! This is the thousand-year-old-egg of the candy world! I ate a few more pieces and sealed it up meticulously again, possibly to be opened again in another few years. I’m hoping to save most of it as a family heirloom.

Ah, another collector of old food! I have a glass of milk from September 2000 in my basement, and an eight year old can of Coke that I hope to preserve for generations.

Yeah, I mean, an old Coke can can come in freakin’ handy! Who knows when you might need one? Like if…uh…aliens came down…and…uh…they wanted…Coke?..or something?..
