That’s basically what I was trying to say. I think the Pit serves a very valid function here, and if you don’t like it…stay out of it. It’s so easy to ignore if you want to. And boards that don’t have this kind of valve end up running like Kindergarten, where people are always running to the mods, whining about mean people…it’s really lame.
This is also true. There is a wide range of styles that you see even among those who participate in the Pit. From what I have seen, the more vitriolic the post, the more likely it will be to be flamed back. Which, ironically, is what happened to Quiddity. Her post was a flame, and it ignited flames. So it seems a little hypocritical to say that it’s everyone else’s problem and it ought to be changed. Nothing like leading by example.
True, but it’s seldom enjoyed by the people in the car. I really don’t think Quid is calling on people to be nice in the Pit so much as she is calling on people not to be cruel. It doesn’t have to be a choice between tea and crumpets or gouging out eyeballs.
I would, but you’ll need to be more specific. I can imagine certain words that you might object to, but certain others are more ambiguous. “Cunt”, for example, is clearly on your list. But “whore” refers by one definition to women, and yet by another sense it is used in expressions like “thread whore” which can be a man or woman. Am I thinking the way you mean?

LHOD offers, by the way, a wise and helpful suggestion, one which I myself should take up more often: When infuriated with someone, write out all the rage and vitriol into a Word doc or unsent email or Notepad, whatever, and let it marinate in its bile. Then when you’re calmer, trash it. That releases the inner demons without allowing them to savage others. The Pit is an occasion of sin for you (and plenty of others), Lib.
I had a boss who used to say “write the letter…don’t send the letter.” It’s very cathartic to write it out, but sometimes not so wise to actually let the target read it! I always thought that was good advice.
Writing a letter you don’t intend to send is an activity I often suggest to people. I should probably do so myself a little more often, especially here.

As a brand-new poster here, I can say that my opinion of this Libertarian poster is that he has way too much time on his hands. The first time he addressed me was to research all my posts and compare them to the posts of someone he paid to go away, and try and find correspondances to prove that I was that same person (at least I think that’s what he was trying to do.) Otherwise since then he’s been nice to me, I don’t know if it’s just a front to try and entrap me or what. But he definitely seems a little bizarre.
Why do you continue to call him by the wrong name?
Your referring to him as “Libertarian” gives an immediate lie to your protestations of being brand-new. In fact, this entire post has more than a whiff of being posted from under a bridge. No doubt a mod will be along presently to smack you around for calling him Libertarian – and to investigate whether you are in fact the trollish sock puppet you appear to be.
The Pit is a wondrous and remarkable place at times.
Mostly it’s just a fetid swamp, though. But it’s so entertaining to watch the waterskiers colliding with the Jetskiers and splashing into the muck. 
There is no rule against addressing a poster by a previous username. You’re thinking of a very specific prohibition directed toward one specific poster, whose name escapes me at the moment. Anyone else is perfectly free to call him Libertarian, and in the Pit, any other name he wishes.
