To Liberal: I'm not pitting you.. I'm just confused

What was that, exactly?

Loads of drama and attention?

And why shouldn’t it have a comparative form?

Otherwise, y’know, I looked at the rest of the thread too, and if Eleusis let Mrs E-to-be think he was a Christian, it seems he was guilty of suggestio falsi at minimum.

You know what? This is getting disgusting. Every time Liberal posts something, a bunch of vultures follow on and attack. I have read quite a few of his posts and nothing seems out of the order here. Whatever his ‘sins’ may have been in past, I think it’s beyond juvenile to follow someone around and pile on him for every word he types.

For a board that is populated with people who seem to consider themselves superior, I’m not seeing superior behaviour on the part of a lot of you.

The excessively arrogant and rude behaviour of the militant atheists here is obnoxious and annoying. Would you grow the fuck up? Nothing** Liberal** said in this thread was worthy of all this bile and vituperation. How do people get so obscenely nasty? Are you all so out of control that you can’t just let someone you dislike (for whatever reason) be and post without feeling you have to bash him incessantly?

Cripes.

Is this a good board or is it yet another version of high school?

I’m with you Quiddity! There’s some bad mojo in the air here.

You realize that Liberal is the topic of this Pit thread, right? There isn’t a more appropriate place to attack someone for their behavior, opinions or general body odor than in a Pit thread devoted to them. That’s what the Pit is for.

Well given the OP’s post 10, unless he’s being sarcastic (and I don’t know that name so I don’t know if he is), it didn’t really sound like regular Pit fare.

Edit to add that the OP says in post 1 that he’s not pitting, maybe it shouldn’t be in the Pit?

No, this thread belongs in the Pit. Even if the OP didn’t want to tear Liberal a new one, just about any thread about another poster’s on-board actions really does belong here, if for no other reason than to allow the subject of the thread to speak freely in response. Besides, people clearly have strong opinions about Liberal’s bet with PRR, so any thread about Liberal right now has the potential to get heated.

The OP really should have been in GD, despite the OP’s claim that he “doesn’t fuck around” there. If you don’t want to go into GD you shouldn’t start a thread on a GD topic, like whether belief is volitional.

I’m not a mod but if I were I’d close this thread, since it should have been in GD, but is now too toxic to move there.

Edited to add: I missed Giraffe’s post and this wasn’t in response to him. Just my opinion.

Eh. I can’t see anyone using those particular initials.

Quiddity, you haven’t been around long enough to have any perspective on this. To expect Liberal to get a clean slate here is to expect that Courtney Love or Michael Jackson could expect the same the next time they do something odd. **Liberal ** has been an ongoing freakshow since before I joined the board; his meltdowns and other bizarre behavior are legendary. This episode is very mild compared to others in the past.

Liberal has worked long and hard to achieve the odium many on the board feel for him. Who are you to try to deprive him of the fruits of it? For **Liberal, ** it doesn’t matter whether the attention is positive or negative, just as long as he is the center of it.

You are correct in thinking that someone should perhaps get a second, third, or even fourth chance. After the dozenth, however, all bets are off. And Liberal is well into the double digits.

I am sorry that my name has caused so much confusion. How do I go about changing it?

I also offered that if Liberal wants to pay me $500 to leave the board, I’ll take him up on his offer.

Email an administrator. TubaDiva at aol dot com is usually the one who takes care of name changes. Mods can’t change names. Offer two or three choices in case your first choice is taken.

Well, you’ll pardon me if I make up my own mind, I hope. I’m never persuaded by the ‘everybody thinks so’ argument and don’t intend to start.

FWIW, Polycarp seems to think well of Liberal and Poly seems to be much respected. So there’s a bit of a dichotomy going on here.

I still think much of this seems to be due to the very aggressive atheist mindset that this board has but I’ll continue to observe and I’ll make my own assessment. And I still think that someone’s past behaviour is a pitiful excuse to pile on to a perfectly innocent post. I’m fascinated by psychology, and if ever there were an example of the ‘horns’ effect, this sure seems to be it.

I’m just interested in how people think it’s logical to operate on the ‘I hate you, therefore I plan to hate everything you say, no matter what’ principle. I loathe Bush but I have to agree with his immigration policy. I don’t know what small bit of his pitiful brain is working, but apparently a few cells are functional and I hate to admit it, but it would be petty and stupid of me to not.

Oh shit you said the B word…

I’m forbidden to speak about him in particular since his choice not to post here apparently is viewed by Dex as an inability to do so. But I had explained it before (and repeatedly) amidst the din. And in general, if I wondered about the sincerity of a person’s convictions, I would ask him questions. If they were ignored, I would issue a challenge. If it were dodged, I would devise a test. What I got for my money was the eradication of my ignorance.

Speaking of the courage of a person’s convictions, your bravery is astonishing in the midst of all this. I do appreciate your noticing who isn’t having a meltdown. Surely Klaatu was drunk — how else to explain an accusation that I’ve changed my opinion of the Bible. I’ve always said it’s just a book, and is in no way holy.

Just F.Y.I. Quentin, the names Ambystoma mexicanum and Ambystoma tigrinum are still available.

Mwahahaha.

I really, really value independent thought and am not one to accept ‘just because it always was this way’ as any sort of reasonable answer. One of my heroes is Harold Laski and I think his The Dangers of Obedience should be required reading for every first-year university student.

I’m a law-abiding, clean-living gal so don’t be thinking I’m holed up in the bush somewhere with my anti-establishment pals and a collection of weapons; not in the least. I abhore group-think, however, and think people need to spend a lot less time being condemnatory of their fellow humans.

I was going to order the book with his essay upon your recommendation, but it is apparently out of print. I’ll keep an eye out. (I don’t do E-Bay, so I haven’t checked there. But I can get someone to buy it on my behalf from such a source, if necessary.)
