To my fan club

So that y’all won’t have to keep bringing up your creepy obsessions in other threads, here’s a place to do it:

catsix. I don’t know how you can fit so many delusions and persecution complexes in a single head. Are you a hydra? Do you keep a collection of neuroses in a cabinet, switching them out as appropriate?

scumpup. Given your fascination with licking butts, I can see where you get your name. Perhaps you’ve made some friends amongst my fan club; maybe one of them will indulge your fantasy, as I’ve so far been unwilling.

You others. Join in, but for the love of Christ, quit hijacking other threads in order to dip my pigtails in the ink. It’s unseemly.

the latest link among many. My hope is that their poison idiocy, at least as pertains to me, can be confined here instead of seeping into other threads wherever I post.

Daniel

I hate your post and I resent you for forcing me to read it.

Daniel, I don’t think this is a creepy obsession, but I just want to say how much I like your handle, Left Hand of Dorkness. It just has a certain ring to it.

Yes, it really seems to fit because Daniel makes me think of Daniel Boone, which makes me think of Boone & Crockett, which makes me think of Crockett, Texas, which make me think of an old girlfriend from Crockett, Mindy Parker, which makes me think of camel toes, which makes me think of the Sahara, which makes me think of the movie Sahara with Matthew McConaughey, which makes me think of Sandra Bullock, which makes me think of Stairmasters because of friend of mine saw her working out on one, which makes me think of the time I went flying off the back of a Stairmaster, which makes me think of dorkiness, which makes me think of how clumsy I am with my left, so yeah… Left Hand of Dorkiness really seems to be an obvious fit.

You’re the first person that got it–awesome!

(And thanks, Giles!)

Daniel

So, you’ve opened two threads open in the pit for people to dump on you in?

Are you sure you’re not spreading yourself too thin, here? :dubious:

I’m jealous. I’ve only been pitted once.

Elton John. Ya know, Daniel my brother? Also, Daniel the Tiger on Mr Roger’s Neighborhood (RIP, Fred).

LHoD, do you look anything like this?
http://pbskids.org/rogers/make_believe/tiger.htm

You can always pit yourself, like LHoD did here. I’ve seen others. It seems to happen fairly often around here.

That can be easily and quickly remedied. I accept VISA, Diners and Mastercard.

What’s the other thread?

Heh, I’ve never been pitted either, though I have now officially been called a dickhead and told both ‘fuck you and double fuck you’ so I feel a little better.
LHOD, I’ve always liked reading what you have to say, even when I disagree with it. You have a great way of putting things. I started paying more attention at first to your posts because for a while I thought you were someone that I know, very similar tone, way of describing yourself, the name sounds like something he would use etc. But since then I’ve come to appreciate you as a poster on your own merit.

Does this mean I’m an anti-fan club?

Preface: I wrote all of this before it was exposed – or maybe rescued – as a joke. Given the uncertainty left by the thread thus far, which if it were sincere seems to me to require an apology somewhere, I’ll leave it as it is, and take my lumps from those dopers hipper than I:

Hi, Lefty, and best wishes (the nickname was offered in the most sincere Odets frame of mind). I’ve often admired your words whether I agreed with them or not. Mostly I have.

You’re drawing an impressive amount of negative attention from relatively few posters who themselves have their fair share of detractors but don’t really fit the mold of People Who Just Shouldn’t Join Message Boards. This is (just my impression) because (a)you’re a little contentious and (b)because you tend to choose oblique, hard-to-meet grounds for contention, which makes it seem as if you’re being contentious just for the hell of it. I do this too, sometimes, and it’s a little amusing that we sometimes get in the way of insults meant for the other one. But there are a few, as Bohr called them, “predictabilities.” For people seriously engaged in a pitting, it’s just plain fucking annoying to be geared up for a Pit slugfest and have your rhetoric and insults and everything all planned out and have to stop dead and look up the word apophasis, or something, especially when it turns out not to really have a whole lot of impact on the original topic. Let’s take that thread (the one you reference) as our example.

In topics like the one referenced, your first post was entirely neutral, off-topic but responsive to another post, your second was very mildly contradictory to the OP but ended with a reference and challenge to whatever other posters you’re calling your “fan club” (how long have you been doing that, by the way? It’s as obvious as carrying around an “enemies list”) that said, specifically, “fuck 'em.” And that was the opening shot, and if it was justified, it was justified in some other thread, unless I missed something. Your next several posts, and those which interacted with them, were innocuous. Most of the next couple of pages were devoted to a discussion of CK Dexter Haven’s unhappily confusing a set of message board moderators with the message board itself. Your next post replied to an awfully oblique and mild criticism of Lord Ashtar (calling him a “mindreader” for making certain assumptions) that he had already answered. From that point, catsix (who had a personal interest in the thread) began spraying venom, and you (who doesn’t have a personal interest, isn’t that right?) responded instantly and enthusiastically. Near the bottom of page five catsix posted something that wasn’t an apology but wasn’t a continuation of hostilities either, saying that she felt jumped on by you but not responding in kind, and your next post called her a liar. No, that’s wrong, you called her a “*big, fat * liar.” Eventually, Scumpup joined in, and I have to confess, his posts signified a dislike for you more than they did a familiarity with the issues involved. But then Mhendo showed up to suggest, without animosity, that you cool it, and you attack him/her also.

Lefty, sometimes you can be correct without being right. I can attest to the fact that you sometimes side against moderators in threads attacking them. See, everybody? http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=351595&page=2&highlight=Czarcasm I can also say confidently that you are an exception to the conclusion I formed a couple of years ago that Asheville was populated by a gaggle of well-intentioned, uninformed nitwits. But I still think you’re more than halfway responsible for picking this fight, and that’s coming from someone on your side. Please consider calling it off.

No, it’s a “touchy-feely bromide”.

Interesting post, King, and I thank you for it. I’m not sure how I would call this off, however: the Fan Club has been following me around for a couple weeks now making revolting comments about me in the middle of other threads. Opening this thread is intended to give me a chance to direct them here instead of engaging their idiocy in other threads.

If I were more mature, maybe I’d just ignore them. Sadly, I’m not.

Yeah, my “fuck em” comment was the opening comment in that thread, perhaps. My experience over the last couple weeks has been that they’d show up soon enough anyway–and they did, and not in response to that post. Preemptive defense, perhaps.

As for responding to the mindreader bit, that was something Garfield had been saying repeatedly throughout the thread. I think my answer to it was pretty straightforward; does it really seem that oblique?

At any rate, if there’s a way for me to call this nonsense off, I’m happy to do so; but I’m not sure how to keep their venom from appearing, so the least I can do is try to confine it.

Daniel

Daniel, I know you’re blowing off steam, but you’ve come close to places where you’d be pissing me off, too.

I don’t suppose you could try to work out an ‘Erik’s Grandmother’ rule for this place, and try to follow it on a personal level?

Something like, ‘never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.’

Remember, all, Daniel is a moderator elsewhere, and he’s got a bias of his own. On the other hand, he has professional insight into what the mods here face, even if he doesn’t always articulate it. That said, some of these threads may be triggering an ‘us against them’ feeling on his side. Might want to think about that, man.

Okey-dokey, then, Lefty, and I’ll be in your corner insofar as accusations of moderator-toadying are concerned, and if this were all there was, I’d be considering the merits of preemptive defense.

But you know damn well how to respond to off-topic insults directed off to your side as well as those aimed before or behind you: they missed, so you don’t have to flinch. I’ve seen you deal with this dozens of times, and I can’t understand why the tactic is beyond you now. If you want to drag catsix and scumpup into a fight, fine, and I’ll jump in on your side if it seems warranted, but the fight wasn’t there until it was time to consolidate all the (admittedly many) snide remarks into a giant ball of animosity, and it still isn’t there insofar as any real issue worthy of your and their time and energy is concerned. This dried-up bit of swampland is it, and your own “fuck 'em” brought the enemy splashing out into the mud, regardless of how successfully later provocations played out.

Lefty, you are plenty mature enough to steer this thread to a civilized conclusion, even if it means tolerating an obnoxious last word. Go ahead and do it.

Plus it’s from a poster who’s gauche, if not outright sinister.

I read your post and I resent you for forcing me to hate it.

The repetition of the insults, as well as the following me around to make them, is what’s gotten to me. I considered starting this thread about a week ago, but at the time I didn’t because the nastiness had died down; instead, I decided to start it next time the nastiness started.

Truth be told, I do flinch.

Daniel
