How bout the fact (according to Karen Armstrong, “The Battle for God”) that religious fundamentalism is a relatively new breed of religion. Extremism, as I understand it is a violent form of fundamentalism and as such is also relatively new.
That isn’t to say that extreme acts have not been committed in the past by non-extremists/non-fundamentalists, but the brand “Fundamentalism” is new…

Yes. Iraq did invade Kuwait first, but it’s not as if the U.S. stepped in to protect Kuwait out of the goodness of their hearts. Kuwait was already a repressive regime somewhat similar to that of Iraq, except unlike Iraq it cooperated with the U.S. If it wasn’t for their oil interests there, the U.S. probably could have cared less what happened.

Two remarks: (1) There is the Far East and there’s the Middle East, very different from each other and (2) this verse is almost always misquoted and misconstrued to mean the exact opposite of the intended original meaning. Read the The Ballad Of East And West and see that immediately after the quoted lines it says
