To the Comedians who troll the Great Debates forum.

I did, but I felt too ashamed to admit it. Is there a support group for us?

Yup.

So there’s three of us.

Is that movement?

Or at least a quorum?

Come on guys. Haven’t you heard? Hijacking is rude, not matter what the reason is. It’s being a “jerk”.

Eddy, Skep… You guys run, I’ll take the flak.

You better smile when you type that.

With the tone of this thread some people might have taken you seriously.

PS Lib quit being a martyr. (please notice the smiley)

I was never a debater in HS (interp and extemp for me), but my senior year I filled in for a sick buddy of mine at short notice in the very first meet of the season. What I knew about CX debate could have filled a thimble, so my partner (who was really just interested in getting a feel for the opposition) had me read off short points or rebuttals he prepared on the fly, and told me to “fill up the time any way I wished.” When cross-examined I was to be as politely obstructive as possible, and he let me have my head when questioning the opposition.

Only one other team took offense. The other teams we faced generally ignored me, concentrating–rightly–on the debate.

But when I managed to get an opponent to admit that the US would be better off investing in Spaghetti-Os than in bologna sandwiches, the judge just lost it.

We took third out of ten.
(Mind you, this was with a devastatingly good partner. And a sick one. He was known to gently undrape a Soviet flag during opponents’ openings.)

Shut up, dropzone.

[smile]

Hey, I love humour, and I didn’t say anywhere that a little humour or irreverence wasn’t fun and valuable. But completely taking over some poor dudes thread and hijacking it beyond redemption is rude.

2- so you’re then going to back up your claim that “Hey asshole maybe you have not heard but we require cites for any factual allegations even in the Pit.”, right?

The point is- asking for “cites” on things that are subjective, and based upon opinion- ESPECIALLY here in the PIT- is IMHO being an asshole, and starting a hijack. So, pardon me if I ignore your feeble attempts at hijacks. If you feel my behaviour is outside the rules, then 'report this post" . Also, so is asking for CITE! on commonly known facts that are outside the discussion at hand.

Oh, and since the  smiley seems to annoy you:

:stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, you’re a laugh-riot.

Do you have an example of what you’re talking about? No? Thought not.

That wasn’t me, numbnuts, that was askeptic. I said “If you make a claim anywhere on these boards, be prepared to back it up. Just because you’re posting in the pit doesn’t mean you get to make up any random shit you want and present it as fact.” Which is demonstrably true all by its lonesome. Just look at the people in this thread who aren’t letting your bullshit claims pass without some sort of evidence to back it up.

You, on the other hand, have made claims about things that happen in other threads. Well, show us one of these threads, then. It’s not a difficult request by any means. You claim this is happening on the boards with some degree of regularity. If it is something you have observed, then it is something you can share with the rest of us. Pony up, or shut up.

And here we see that you do not understand the definition of the words “subjective,” “hijack,” or “humble.”

You made an objective claim of fact: that people hijack threads with jokes because they can’t respond factually to the OP. That’s not an opinion, that’s a statement of fact. One which you cannot substantiate, because you’re making shit up, you lying little flake of excrement.

Asking you to substantiate a claim you’ve made in support of the OP to this thread isn’t a hijack, you cretinous lump.

Where have I accused you of violating board rules? There’s only one person in this thread who’s done that, and that’s you.

It’s not a commonly known fact just because you say so. And you’re the one who brought up those “facts” in the first place, so don’t come complaining to me if you feel they’re off topic.

Well, yeah. Doesn’t mean it’s not funny, though.

::pokes head in thread::
Hey guys, anyone seen Bosda? He’s not answering his e-mails.

Well, that smiley typo was strangely appropriate.

There ya go…pure poetry!

It is if the claim us unsubstantiatable.

Hah! I’m not the only person in the world who uses the word “choad!” In your face!

Sorry, I’m hijacking. How jerkish of me.

Anyway, I’m just going to agree with approximately 95% of the posters here: Humor is not inappropriate for a serious discussion. Certain types of humor might be inappropriate for certain discussions (i.e. - “dead baby” jokes in a thread about someone’s child who recently died), but there are few situations that can’t be improved with a little levity. And I’d also like to see an example of a well-written, well-constructed, well-argued OP in Great Debates that was subsequently derailed and made unreadable by joking hijacks. Pretty please. With sugar on top.

DrDeth you are treading into guinnog and spongemom territory. Are you sure you want to go there? It did not end well for them. Do you want to join the ranks of pittings that went terribly wrong?

Who did **I **pit, hmm? Or, is it just anyone who disagrees with you? :dubious:

Geez, dudes- for guys that claim to like humour so much you insist upon interjecting it everywhere, you sure get your panties in a bunch real fats. Lighten up. De-stress.

:stuck_out_tongue:

“The Dude abides.”

Who said “well-written, well-constructed, well-argued OP” or even “Great Debates”?

So what forum were you talking about winning a debate in? MPSIMS?
